Need some expert diagnostic assistance
« on: November 01, 2013, 03:19:37 PM »

I've read through some of the threads here but didn't find anyone have the same issue, so I thought I would throw my issue out to the smart folks instead of 1) boxing and returning or 2) picking up a hammer...

I purchased the DGL-5500 from New Egg and it works...just not consistently or for more than a few hours at a time. I have never have an 'up-time' of more than four hours before it drops the IP; sometimes it only lasts an hour. It drops (regardless where I use static or dynamic) but ALWAYS immediately re-obtains an IP and continues to resume connection. I upgraded to the newest firmware and have contacted the ISP about the line (which is new) and they modem (which is also new) and they found no issues. I have played around with a few settings over the last couple of days and nothing I've tried has helped. I only have two items hardwired (a PC and an Xbox) and have an iPhone on 2.4GHz (5Ghz turned off).

The logs below are from a reboot of the router captured at start up. You will not the time change randomly in the logs; its weird but it always eventually reverts to the correct time. I will attempt to catch the logs of the random disconnects when it occurs. Please let me know what other information might be useful to have to assist with identifying the problem. And yes, I intentionally added ".xx" to mask my true IP for those you smart-a$$es like me that would chime in and say "well, there's your problem" :)

I really do appreciate any and all advice and assistance.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
What is your current Streamboost and ABE configuration set for?

Checked after dinner; looked fine...then while I was sitting here, it died. Logs of the event below the questions.

Answered in-line below:

What Hardware version is your router?   A1
What Firmware version is currently loaded? 1.11
What region are you located? Maryland
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router? PC and Xbox wired; iPhone wireless
Has a Factory Reset been performed? No - hesitant to try as I can’t locate the card with the manufacture login/password; if it’s generic or easily retrievable, I’m certainly willing to try.
Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch? No. Not sure this is causing the issue, see next answer :)
Was the router working before any firmware updates? No. This router has functioned in this manner since I unboxed it.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL? Comcast Cable - stop snickering! :)
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have? Motorola SURFBoard SB6141
What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have? 50up/10down

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. No DMZ; only one modem on line; not bridged.

Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Confirmed when I called ISP during early troubleshooting; MTU at 1500
For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled. Doesn’t apply.

Router and Wired Configurations

What is your current Streamboost and ABE configuration set for? Streamboost Bandwidth Control ON; ABE OFF.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Already swapped out cable during initial troubleshooting; Using Cat5e.

Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch? No. Not sure this is causing the issue, see next answer :)
Please follow this for doing any FW updates: FW Update Process

Was the router working before any firmware updates? No. This router has functioned in this manner since I unboxed it.
When doing a factory reset, the default log in PW for the routers web page is just blank so you can easily access the web page to reconfigure the router and wifi settings with out the need of the card. I recommend doing a full factory reset and set up the router from scratch. Please use IE or FF to set up the router from scratch.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL? Comcast Cable - stop snickering! :)
Be sure Comcast isn't using any DNS helpers or boosters. There is a forum sticky regarding that.

What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have? Motorola SURFBoard SB6141
What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have? 50up/10down
This is a good ISP modem. I have the 6180, 6121 and 6120. Good modems.

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Router and Wired Configurations

What is your current Streamboost and ABE configuration set for? Streamboost Bandwidth Control ON; ABE OFF.
Review the new post entry in my Review of the router and enable SB and ABE using the info posted there and see how it works for you.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Already swapped out cable during initial troubleshooting; Using Cat5e.

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Thanks for your advice. Conducted a factory reset (thanks for the PW help BTW!). Still have same problem.

Last week, I had a Comcast Technician come out to the house to install a second internet account in my home; essentially one for my wife’s bandwidth hogging apps (Facetime, Skype, photosharing, etc) and one for mine (Xbox Live, Netflix, etc). I wasn’t watching over his shoulder at install but I was just now able to gain access to the cable junction in my home and noted what appears to be a splitter/booster with the main line (from the pole) going into one end and my two connections (my old one and new one) coming out of the other. I moved my old Netgear Router to the new line and installed the DGL-5500 on this line. There have been no noted issues with the old Netgear router; it’s connection uptime hasn’t indicated it’s been disconnected since I moved it.

I just got off the phone with a Comcast Internet Tech who said that this booster/splitter was the typical install method for two accounts in the same household and he reassured me that we aren’t sharing bandwidth as we each have separate accounts and IP addresses. During the initial install the tech checked my signal strengths in the home and they were low (likely why the booster was installed); the tech I talked to over the phone checked again (to both modems) and said my strengths were good. I don’t know that I have any reason to doubt him...

I did notice something else strange I didn’t notice previous to the factory reset. Under the Device Info page, the MAC address listed in the WAN section is not identical to the MAC address listed in the LAN section (which is the MAC address printed on the box and device); the last digit is off by one digit. I am using Dynamic IP, so everything should be auto-populated. I tried to use the Static IP function (populating it with the IP, Subnet, Gateway, and PDNS/SDNS given during the Dynamic IP) and the same (correct and incorrect) MAC Address but it keeps reverting the WAN to the incorrect one and the LAN to the correct one. Maybe this is the source of all of my issues?

Also, isn’t the Default Gateway supposed to be identical to the IP address except for the last octet which should be a .1? If so, that’s not happening either...

Should I be finding the return label or the hammer? :)

The WAN MAC address, I believe ON the box and ON the router should be the same. Mine is. There will be a different MAC address for the LAN or WLAN side that should be different by one character I believe.

Does the 5500 connect at any of these 2 locations?

I would do this. Use FF or IE. Put the latest version of the FW on the desktop and unpack it.
1. Disconnect the 5500 from the ISP modem and just have 1 wired LAN PC connected to the 5500.
2. Do a factory reset using the UI and let it come to ready. Cancel the wizard.
3. Go in and re-send the v1.11 FW .bin file using IE or FF. Ensure any browser security add-ons and Windows security programs are disabled. Let the router process the FW and let it come to ready again.
4. Reconnect the 5500 to the ISP modem with out any other devices, just the 1 wired LAN PC. Power cycle the ISP modem off for 15 sec then back ON. Let it come to ready.
5. Do one more factory reset using the UI.
6. This time use the wizard to walk thru the setup, SSID and PW and Internet check and speed testing. It should be able to get thru Internet check and speed testing.

Let us know if you can get passed this.

Made another appointment for a tech to come out. I'd bet good money that the first tech caused this issue. I will report back. Thanks for your help!

The logs showing a wrong time frame could be that initially the NTP server hasn't updated the time correctly during that period. Will have to look in to that I guess...Keep us posted on the ISP tech. Ensure the modem has proper signal and have it stay there while you test the router out. Initially be connected to the modem with one PC, then connect up the router. Hope they figure it out.

I really appreciate all the advice provided. Long story short: It wasn't the router. I think my request for a second internet connection (two accounts in one household) was beyond the knowledge and capability of many of the Comcast Support Techs. After multiple, painstakingly LONG telephone calls, it was determined that the original request was botched in the system and each subsequent troubleshooting call made it a little worse. Finally, I got a patient and competent Account Rep who basically started over and within thirty minutes I had both accounts active and both modems online running at full speed.

This router is significantly faster than my previous NetGear "gaming" router. I love it! I don't see much advantage to StreamBoost yet though as I bought it solely for gaming and only the XBox connected.
