Title: DIR-882 - cannot uplod factory dd-wrt firmare
Post by: kabi on April 05, 2019, 05:06:34 PM
I've bought  882  router with 1.11 already flashed in  (also printed on the sticker/lable on the router bottom).

The problem seem to be - there is no way to upload dd-wrt firmware nymore - since on ANY firmware file it does print
"Upgrade failed!" right after firmware has been uploaded in recovery mode.

My best guess is - D-Link has actually prohibited to upload any non-digitally signed firmware images, rendering whole  dd-wrt idea useless.?

The only firmware I can downgrade is 1.10  - yet this does not make uploading  dd-wrte image any easier.

So does anyone here knows  what is this all about - I surely do not want to run  rather useless DLink firwmare - if that would be the case.,
I'd likely return router to the shop - and by something more supported..

Try loading v1.01 OEM FW on the 882 using this process:
Emergency Recovery Mode (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=44909.msg163599#msg163599)

Then try to load DD-WRT...

Why you think that OEM FW is "useless"?

I've tried to upload all the firmware files I've been able to collect - so 1.01, 1.04, 1.10 for 882
ONLY 1.10 was accepted  by the rescue mode of this router  all others got instant message  'Upgrade failed' - so I cannot downgrade to older version - how absurd! - so I've assumption D-Link manufacturer wants to prohibit usage of nonDlink firmware by only supporting flashing of signed firmware (also in recovery mode!)
(My router came with 1.11 already in - and  is also printed on bottom ticket - bought in Czech Rep. this month)
(and I've no words for 'the fancy' way how user can upload these firmware files - WHO WAS TESTING that - it's worst then cheap China router I could buy for $30)

I've selected this router because it seemed to be almost the only one MU-MIMO with reasonable price and support of at least ddwrt - but clearly I was wrong - I'll likely return DLink and buy either twice as much expensive Netgear R7800 - or maybe try MU-MIMO brandless Chine one - it will be same firmware lock-in just cheaper...

And what I don't like on the original OEM firmware - well it could be a loooong list, but if you haven't seen dd-wrt or Gargoyle and their capabilities -  you probably live in happy world. My basic demand is that I could LOG-IN remotely (i.e. ssh) and also attached USB printer is a must for me (that's why there are 2 USB ports) - I could resolve these by attaching i.e. some raspberry-pi box on network - but why should I be doing that ?? - and clearly network statistics provided by OEM firmware is also almost useless.

I've no illusions about the support of DLink for this router - so I do not expect anyone in DLink would add any of those feature - they want me to be new router next year :) - so support by 3rd. party like openwrt is simple a must - unless you replace router every 2 years - but that's not my plan...

It's probably a problem with the WRT FW file. If you got v1.10 loaded then WRT should load.
The Admin posted that WRT is loadable on the 882 with v1.10 loaded:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=73607.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=73607.0)

If you downgraded to v1.10 and WRT is not taking, I would presume this is probably a problem with WRT and not D-Link FW. You'll need to contact some over at DD-WRT to see if others are having problems and if there is a different work around to get WRT loaded.

And by the looks, others have been able to get WRT loaded.  :o

It's up to them to make sure there FW works on D-Link routers. Not D-Links responsibility!!!

So ok - after many hours lost trying to upload the firmware from my Linux boxes - my head was 'enlightened' - and I hunted for a Win10 box with their browser.
What a miracle that was!!

So whoever reads this - DLink recovery firmware cannot be uploaded on Linux with Firefox (66) or Chrome (74).
The upload of firmware is simply broken.

The upgrade went hell better when it's been made through a Windows10 box and its Internet browser.

So now I'm already connected through DLink 882 operated by latest DDWRT image - so great thanks to dd wrt devel here!

So I need to eat humble pie here - there is NO  firmware lock-in on this Dlink router.
The upgrade just cannot be made with current linux boxes, but one has to find Windows box.

Later upgrade from running DDWRT then of course works nicely from Linux.

Ah ok. I see. Interesting the Linux based browser wouldn't load it.  ::)

Glad it took and you can enjoy it now.

Any more information and such, post on there forums. Good people there to help you out.

I'll be sure to update our FAQs to let users know that they need a Windows or Mac to do this.

Enjoy your pie now.  ;)

Few more notes - I'm now on the latest available version - 03-27-2019-r39296 - seems to work as good as the suggest version from last year.

There seems to be missing printer support (assuming just not compiled-in) and also MiniDLNA somehow cannot be enabled ??

On my way reporting these issue on DDWRT forum to get them resolved...

Thanks for letting us know. This is something the WRT gang will have to figure out.
Good Luck.

The only issue seems to be - there is not much happening when reporting something on dd-wrt forum about this device.
(I've got 100% more feedback here ;))

So maybe anyone here can provide me with hints how to build my own  dd-wrt image ?

I know there is pretty complex universal guide for dd-wrt - but maybe there is already someone with right setup and can give me some hints here?

All WRT information will need to be posted at the DD-WRT forum. Try and send a user there who seems to be working with the 882 a private message to see if they respond.
I would contact one of the following:
bushant
Malachi
or BrainSlayer

Good Luck.
