Just wanted everyones opinion. My modem kicked the bucket and can't decide which one to get. Its between these three.

Cisco DPC3010
-8 down, 4 Up
-Wider Freq range
-Stable firmware (by reviews)
-Cant buy 3rd party

Zoom 5431
-4 down, 4 Up
-Cheaper
-TI Chipset (T1 was bought by Intel, firmware updates?)
-Same case as DCM-202, known heat problems.

Motorola SB6121
-4 down, 4 Up
-A SB6120 in the body of a SB6580. Same firmware. I <3 my 6120
-Different case=not as good heat distro?

Or I can wait for the SB6180 to be released in my area. Wasn't going to be retail available at first, but I guess Motorola changed their mind.

Motorola SB6180
-Pretty much a SB6120 but with 8down/4up

Right now? No. But I don't "need" alot of the toys and gadgets I have, including my 4500. My entire network is wired, and I rarly game anymore. ::grin::. Kidding aside, I want to future proof it so my next modem is up to date for the next 3-4 years. And its possible they might open 5 down and 4 up in a couple years. I think its between getting the DPC3010 or waiting for the SB6180.

I think you have sound reasoning in buying the better modem for future upgrades and it being able to handle the technology a few years down the road.   :D

Well, thats good too however with IPv6 looming on the horizon. I'm kinda waiting to see how that played out. People are whining and complain that there HW doesn't support it and rushing to get it going. I think theres more to it then just adding it to FW updates. I'm trying to be patient and wait to see how it goes.

Oh, well that's a good point, too.  So, with modems, it's not a good idea to buy too far in advance but just use today's technology?

Ya, That would be my thinking, however people can do what they wish. I would do some research before going to buy anything newer and see what it supports and what, if any, information regarding future technology integration it might support. Right now your still waiting on DOCSIS v3. Your ready for it though and should be a seamless transition for you.

True, true.

We got an update on our cable TV receivers last night.  Some new, fancy, definitely more aesthetically pleasing Guide layout, which made me wonder if that had anything to do with the internet side of things.  Probably two different beasts, huh?

Yea, two separate things. Rovi, Sara, or Passport?  Anyway, I think most of even the 1st generation D3 modems had IPv6 support(Including the 6120 past 1.0.3). Heck, so does the SB5101U. Most of that will be handled by a firmware update when the time comes, and most D2 modems will be compatible. I mean they will have to make it that way. Unlike the D2 to D3 transition which is optional, the IPv4 to IPv6 is much more mandatory, albeit with some wiggle room. Where you want to do some research though is on the router side, basically past the CPE, because thats where things will get complicated for the consumer.

Im really hoping they make (a) or the UI easier to use for IPv6. I'm still foggy on how to use it here and there. LOL.

You sure know your cable Harry.  It's Passport and is written like this Passport > echo.

Just noticed something odd, is it me or did the supply of SB6120 take a nose dive? Both Newegg, Fry's and Tigerdirect out of stock for over a week. BestBuy and Amazon out of stock too (online at least) for over a week. Both back in stock, but a 50$ price increase on Amazon?!? Why I am concerned is Motorola uses TI chipsets. Major manufacture for TI? Japan. Hmmm. So if you need a 6120, now is the time to buy. I am buying another tomorrow at local BestBuy. Only place I can find one.
