Author Topic: Large file transfers invariably fail, due to inactive control connection?  (Read 5629 times)

Hi all,

Any ideas would be appreciated.

What I have: a DIR-855 further connected to a DSL modem.

The problem: any large file transfer with the traditional tools (ftp is my test bench, but same goes for all my software updates initiated from web uis etc).

Symptom: using ftp, download halts at 650M (5-6 minutes or so).
 - on the ftp client, it is apparent the underlying control connection's gone. Ie host disconnected (well prior when they should !)
  - dir-855's log has the evidence, like
[INFO]   Mon Nov 28 02:36:42 2011   Blocked incoming TCP packet from 62.62.62.62:21 to 192.168.1.65:12345 as PSH:ACK received but there is no active connection

So far ruled out every other culprit:
 - the said transfers are successful if I connect direct to the DSL modem.
 - i've tried windows, macos and Unix clients
 - interesting: i replaced the 855 with a dir-655,  to find similar behaviour. But 655 did, finally after unsetting FIREWALL SETTINGS > enable SPI, to pass a test download succesfully.

Now anything I do on the 855, will not help. I've set of everything Off nd sometimes on, too (spi too, and with 855 it did not help; but then, the manual confesses some features stand anyway even if you disable it). The list is too long ..

Oh, and I changed the DSL modem too, with little effect in this matter.

My only guesses.. relate to the 6 min point in time this approx seems to happen. The box aggressively cuts down seemingly idle connections? Or, when examining incoming packets, forgets about old entitlements?

Any ideas? And, this seriously can't be how D-link's boxes just "work"?!

Edit: almost forgot. Firmware Version: 1.23WW Hardware Version: A2
Product Page: DIR-855

For the 655 I mentioned, firmware claimed to be 2.00. Dsl is DSL-2740B, eu-1.00

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
