Title: DIR-857 Connection Losses
Post by: RSKadish on April 22, 2013, 05:19:43 AM
Hi all,

I am a Time Warner Cable customer and just bought a DIR-857 to replace a DIR-655.  Everything was fine except for one thing.  Skype from my 2.4 GHz iPhone 4 was TERRIBLE, to the point where it was unusable.  I had never had any problems with the old router.

I enabled Traffic Shaping for the QOS Engine, which has helped a lot.  However, the quality is still not what I was getting with the DIR-655.  Also, since then, I have had three instances where ALL devices (both wired and wireless) have lost ALL Internet access.  Twice it has cleared up on its own after a minute or so, and once I had to reboot the router.  I don't know whether it is a connection or DNS issue.

I'd like a resolution to these problems.  Any suggestions or advice is appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
- Steve

Just a guess but try and change the channel. Im not sure if you can but others around you could be using the same channel and causing an issue. Its just a guess, I really dont know anything about this stuff.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion.  I just want to emphasize what I said in the post that the complete loss of Internet access was on wireless AND wired clients.

Best,
- Steve

Maybe Furry will address this issue. I too have the 857 and he got it working for me

Link>Welcome! (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=41537.0)

Link>What Firmware (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=47512.0) version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status. Where did you download the FW update from?
What region are you located?

Has a Factory Reset been performed both before and after sending the FW file or was the routers web page used to update the router?
Was the router exhibiting this before you updated?
Was there a problem before updating FW? Reason for updating?

Any streaming devices operating when Skype calls are being made?

What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53008.0)

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS (http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html) or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature. Tools/Time.

Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/) to find out. How many?

Enable WMM Enable (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=50738.0) Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAT6)

Hi Furry,

Thanks for the reply.  I was reading these forums before I posted, so I had already seen your excellent checklist several times.  I've already looked at it and tried many of your suggestions, including the DHCP reservations.  I updated the firmware first thing upon unpacking the router.

It happened again this morning - when I woke up, I had no Internet connection from any of my wired or wireless devices (desktop PC, iPad, iPhone, Roku.)  After a few minutes of refreshing things, etc., access came back.  Again, no idea what the cause was or why it resolved itself.

Any specific suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks,
- Steve

Hi Furry,

Thanks.  Please see my answers below.  I've tried a few things, but so far the behavior has been consistent.  Here's what I'm experiencing:  I leave the apartment or go to bed, and various network devices go with me, or go to sleep, or do whatever it is Roku players do when no one is looking.  Later I come home, or wake up, and various devices get woken up/start to talk to the network, etc.  After a few minutes, all of the devices (wired and wireless, Windows, iOS, Kindle, whatever) stop talking to the Internet.  None of them lose their network connections, and there are no errors - requests to the Internet simply keep retrying until the time out.  And then, after about five minutes, without me touching anything, everything just goes back to normal.

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
1.04 , 23, Oct, 2012

Where did you download the FW update from?
I updated the firmware right out of the box using the Tools -> Firmware menu.

What region are you located?
US, New York

Has a Factory Reset been performed both before and after sending the FW file or was the routers web page used to update the router?
I updated the firmware right out of the box, using the Tools-> Firmware menu. I did a factory reset afterwards during my first round of troubleshooting.

Was the router exhibiting this before you updated?
I updated the firmware right out of the box.

Was there a problem before updating FW? Reason for updating?
I updated the firmware right out of the box.

Any streaming devices operating when Skype calls are being made?
No, usually the iPhone is the only 2.4 GHz device.  However, my concern is not really the Skype quality, it's the fact that all devices lose connection when the router has been left alone for a period of time.

What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Motorola SURFboard SB5101U DOCSIS 2.0 Cable Modem

Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Traffic Shaping is currently enabled, for better Skype performance.

Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
Done

Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Done

Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Done

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router.
I've tried with both all and no reservations; the issue persists.

Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Done

If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
Done

Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
This seems to be N/A for the DIR-857.

Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.
Done

Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
I am not using port forwarding rules.

Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
Done, and Media Server disabled as well.

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Done

WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed?
Set to auto.

Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature
Done.

Hi Furry,

I live in a 16-story high rise apartment building in Brooklyn, NY.  There are many, many other WiFi routers in the area.  Can I ask what the relevance of the question is?  This issue is effecting my wired AND wireless devices.  My Windows PC is hard-wired to the router, and that experiences the same blackout period as everything else.

Thanks,
- Steve

Hello again,

Thank you - I've seen that article myself.  But again, I'd like to ask - WHAT does wireless signal congestion have to do with my HARD-WIRED computer being unable to communicate with my ISP for five minutes every time the router has been idle for a few hours?

Would be a good test to turn OFF the WiFi radios then see if your wired connections still have problems...

Fair enough.  Tonight, before I go to bed, I'll turn off all wifi in the apartment.  And then we'll see what happens when I get up tomorrow.  If I don't lose connection to the ISP tomorrow morning, what would you suggest as a next step?

Good morning,

So, before sleep I disabled both radios in the router, and this morning I confirmed that I still had the same problem.  With the radios still off, I woke up the hard-wired Windows desktop, and after opening a few Web pages requests started timing out and the browser was telling me that it couldn't complete DNS requests.  After a few minutes, everything went back to normal.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks,
- Steve

I Think you need to look at your ISP Service, cable lines, signal going into the ISP Modem and ISP Modem HW. Make sure there isn't any T.V. line splitters before the ISP modem. Ask your ISP to physically check the signal going into the ISP Modem. Install a new ISP modem. Motorola SB 6 series stand alone modems are highly recommended however you need to check signal first. A bad signal on any modem will cause problems.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAT6)

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer (http://www.teamviewer.com) if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Thanks, Furry.  The fact that it's only happening with this new router, and that it's so consistent and reproducible, doesn't seem like an ISP issue.  More likely it's some sort of resource exhaustion issue.  There's a whole burst of network traffic generated when the computer wakes up and other devices connect, and I suspect there's something in the router - a NAT table?  A connection table?  that is getting filled up.  But, that's mostly intuitive speculation.

At any rate, the fact that I filled out the tech support contact form at D-Link and haven't had an acknowledgement or response is a deal-breaker for me.  I've ordered a different router and arranged to return the DIR-857.

I appreciate all your help and suggestions!  It seems like you are the major problem-solver around here!
