Trying to Configure DSR-250 to hand out my Static IP block
« on: December 11, 2015, 06:27:35 PM »

I bought a DSR-250 to sit behind a NVG589. I've got the NVG589 in Pass through mode, and am trying to allocate my 5 IP block to the DSR-250. The router itself appears to be picking up my first static IP in the block fine, but I have a dns and email server sitting behind the DSR-250, but they are not getting assigned the Static IPs that they are configured for.

Unfortunately, this whole mess started when my 2Wire RG was replaced. I'm trying to follow this cookbook (http://www.spearfoot.net/uverse-static-ip/), but I'm starting to think that I cannot assign more than 1 Static IP to the DSR-250. I am getting 192.168.x.x DHCP addresses handed out just fine.

Am I trying to do something that is not possible?

Please help, my family is going on multiple days of ****py email service because of this.

Thanks

Can you post some screenshot or cut-outs of how you currently have the DSR-250 configured?

Also, is hardware required to route the block? IE if you connected a switch to NVG589, could devices connected to the switch each use a IP or does it need a shared gateway? This is sometimes called a CIDR block.

Last, does your ISP cache the MAC addresses bridging the static IP's? With my ISP (Cox), you have to get the ARP cache cleared on their end so the IP's route to the new device. Maybe thats why the problem started when you replaced the gateway? Try connecting a device direct to the gateway and see if you can use one of the IP's your having trouble with.  Need to make sure ISP's end is good before you start banging your head against a wall with the Dlink router.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Thanks for the replies.

I was able to get some help on this from Support and finish the configuration.

To restate my problem, I wanted to pass my 5 Internet Route-able IP addresses to different servers inside my LAN.

x.x.x.341  -------->  192.168.12.25 (dns ns1)
x.x.x.342  -------->  192.168.12.26 (Mail, ns2)
x.x.x.343  -------->  192.168.12.27 (Security DVR)
x.x.x.344  -------->  192.168.12.28 (MX2)
x.x.x.345  -------->  192.168.12.29 (Web & LAMP)

It wasn't apparent to me how I should configure to support this. I knew I could NAT off of my single .341 WAN address, but I didn't know how to bind to the .342-.345 addresses.

This configuration is accomplished by using IP Aliasing and Firewall Rules.

Add an IP Alias for each additional IP similar to the following. Determine what mask is required for your range.
WAN   x.x.x.342    255.255.255.248

Part 2 is create a Firewall Rule with a NAT mapping. Something similar to the following.

From Zone         Insecure (WAN)
To Zone           Secure (LAN)
Service           <Select the appropriate service>
Action            Always Allow
Source Hosts      Any
Log               <You decide>

Destination NAT Settings
Internal IP Address         192.168.12.25
   <---- One of your internal addresses you want map to
Enable Port Forwarding      Off
External IP Address         WAN1
        The drop down will display a list of available external WAN addresses that you added in the IP Aliasing. Once selected, it will just display WAN1

Repeat a rule for each service and external address.

Again, thanks for the initial replies. I simply got busy and didn't get to reply back right away.
