So far the signal shaping doesn't seem to be doing much to help, but I will give it more time.

If I don't see improvement I may want to use directional or frequency optimized antennas instead of the originals. Is there any information about which antenna is used for which frequency on the DIR-880L?

Are you having problems with this router?
Not sure what you are needing. These antennas are optimized and tested for this router and work well for me.

The 880L is being used in router mode and as long as I am close enough it works great but coverage in some areas at a distance is a problem.

I am planning to help it identify the best pattern by repeatedly logging on where needed, but it may just be too far.

It may be that the beam patterning is real time and not cumulative which would mean I'm already in need of helping it with better antennas but it would help if I knew which antenna did what. 

It is a definite improvement over other routers but I need a little more, not enough to justify another AP.

What distances are you needing?
What areas seem to need more coverage?
What building materials are between the router and these areas that need coverage?

All of this really doesn't matter because I can't change it.

It is from one corner of the house, single story, to the opposite diagonal corner, so maybe 70 feet. It goes through several layers of drywall and given the structure it's probably 8 walls. Also the kitchen is between the points so I have the metal in the microwave to deal with, it's not an issue of running the microwave since I wouldn't do both at the same time, just the metal.

The arrangement is pretty well set which is why I am trying to throw more power into the direction I need.

No chance of moving the router to a more central location?

Seems that if you can't, then I think that your best choice would be an AP on the far end. I have a similar house arrangement however my distance is about half of yours and less walls. I think your best bet would be stable AP at that end of the house. Can you run some CAT6 wire up in the attic?

No, its a lease/rental deal and the owner said no (expletive deleted). Not sure why but the configuration is stuck.

Which is why I want to find out which  antenna does what so I can put a directional on that one. I may just start experimenting.

I'd get into a DAP-1650 or a 1520 and run it as a extender or repeater.

Let us know what you come up with.
