COVR 2202 regularly needs rebooting.
« on: September 03, 2020, 06:39:09 AM »

Hello everyone.

If anyone can help with this I’d be really grateful. I have a 2202 system set up at home, A node and 2 x B nodes. For the most part the system is great, but whenever I go away and the internet is not being used regularly (only the smart devices in my home like Nest and cameras etc) the device seems to go into flashing amber mode. I have had to ask friends to go over and login to network and reset the device and then after a reboot all is fine... only for it to go offline again  roughly 24 hours later. What’s more annoying is it often happens when I’m away, so if a friend can’t pop over I’m a little bit screwed. I believe I can set up remote management but I’ve not set this up yet... anyway, can anyone shed light on why this is happening? I also notice that there is an option for the device to reboot daily at a set time... surely I don’t have to do that!? Seems ridiculous! The device is running version 1.5 I believe.

Thanks

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

Please update FW to this version:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=75828.0

There was a known problem with v1.05 causing the A point to crash. Update the B Point first then A Point lastly.

Hi, I’m based in UK. Thanks for the link,  I’ll check it out. So, will the nodes not update themselves automatically?

Thanks again

Hi!

I updated all the nodes, staring with the slaves and then finally the Master...

My system has been even more unstable since, really is deeply frustrating. What's more annoying is that the system doesn't think to Auto-reboot itself when stuck on the amber flashing cycle... it would be really helpful if D-Link could build that in to the options. Currently, the best solution I have is to set it daily reboot which is just utterly ridiculous.

My CCTV is largely Wi-Fi based and this lack on stability is basically going to mean that I need to get rid of this system. Big shame.

I have now reverted to 1.04, hoping for stability and to stop dreaded amber light.

Another issue that this router seems to have is that say Virgin decides to run a test or the internet drops off causing the router to flash amber, you'd think that once the Virgin connection was restored it would kick back into life... but it doesn't... it just hangs there helplessly until you manually reboot it. Am I missing something here? Just seems incredible.

Did you factory reset the A and B points after v1.06 was loaded and setup from scratch?
Mine ran great since loading v1.06 and saw no amber LED on the A Point. B point ethernet connected too. Been best version to date sans there is a bug in FW when in Bridge (AP) mode.  ::)
Possible there maybe something in FW for your region that could have a difference.

Hey FurryNutz, thanks for being so helpful.

Honestly, I did not try that but I will do that this evening. My concern is that with a factory reset, will I not have to rename the router and change the passwork and then go around and reconnect all of my devices? I have around 15 connected so its a total pain in the bum.

On my second point around why the router doesn't attempt to auto reboot when stuck in an amber loop, is it possible to raise this with the engineers? I can't see why that wouldn't be a good option to include in the GUI.

Thanks so much

I would re-load v1.06 again on the B point then A point. Then factory reset both and walk thru the setup process with your mobile device and complete it. I would do this with all wired devices disconnected from the A point. Just have the A Point connected to the ISP modem. Once all setup then connect everything up and do one full reboot.

You can use the same SSID name and password when you reset and setup from scratch. So when the system is setup and back online, all of your devices will auto reconnect using  same SSID name and password.

Hi again.

So, I did all of that last night... everything went well. Weirdly, I couldn't seem to login into node c after reset... was just flashing orange but after I plugged it into node A it auto  synced and then I had the white light, so all good on that front.

However, had another crash this morning... flashing orange light on point A node... both other nodes did not flash orange or red to signify an issue. I noticed that my Virgin Media box was doing some type of call home (the green arrows were present for a couple of minutes) so perhaps it was doing an update. Never the less, the problem still pertains and further more D-Link 2202 seems to be unable to get itself out of a crash... surely it should be able to recognise there is an issue and force a reboot or reconnection, why is that not possible?

I'm totally stumped as to what is going on now if I'm honest... I'm starting to think its either a device or something on the ISP side that is tripping the router.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Darn, was hoping it might fix your problem.
Sounds like for you, yours is crashing unexpectedly while in router mode.

I would ask you to make contact with your regional D-Link support office about this and let them know what your seeing. I have forwarded this on to my regional office here for review though not sure what they can do since your in the UK. I do have a bug report in on the 2202 while in AP mode. I was able to reproduce this last nite. Mine also seems to bring down my host router as well. However I presume there maybe differences between your configuration and mine. Router mode for mine works well. Just AP mode with the B Point ethernet connected crashes the system.  :-\

Be sure to give D-Link all the details, modem mfr and model, configuration of the modem to the A point and B point. Any switches and wired devices in use.

I guess in mean time downgrade back to what was working on the B point first then A point and go from there.

Hopefully D--Link can figure this out.

Thanks, I appreciate the help and I'll let you know how I get on.

For reference I have 3 nodes.

1 node, point A is connected to my Virgin Media superhub 3 which is running in Modem mode. 1 ethernet is connected to port 1 on node A, no other devices present.

Point B is in my kitchen around 15 meters away... with no other devices plugged in.

Point C (originally a point A that I purchased on eBay that I have running in Bridge mode) is located upstairs with no other devices connected.

Thanks again.

Does this happen with just 1 B Point connected? I only have 1 B Point. Wondering if 2 B Points maybe an issue.   ???

Try running the system with out the C Point that you got from ebay.

I've only had the 2nd Point B node for about 6 weeks and the problems are very intermittent and random. However, it was doing this from time to time before I had that second node.

That's what is so weird about this, it has done it on off since I've owned the COVR product but then it will go weeks (sometimes months) with nothing happening then suddenly it's doing it all the time. Very odd.

The main problem for me is that I have to manually reboot the router when it gets stuck on flashing amber... my fix was to set it to daily reboot, especially when I'm holiday and I want to access things remotely (like my nest and CCTV) and I can't because the router has failed me. Sadly, If I can't find a fix it's going to have to be replaced.
