DIR-857: wireless drops
« on: December 23, 2012, 05:50:10 PM »

I am getting constantly disconnected on my 2.4 ghz wireless channel. I have Panasonic telephones which operates on 5.8 ghz range. I have turned off 5.4 on the router. Is there any firmware upgrade that address it?

Thank you for your help.

Yeah I know what you mean. The 5ghz as of late is not working properly, My lappie and Iphone 5 cannot connect to it. It is visible but now an error message of cannot connect to this network shows up now.

InSSIDer can see the network, so it is live and active, no interference from other 5ghz. It's just me I can see

This helped me with my devices that wouldn't connect.  Turn them all on and then try configuring the one that doesn't connect.

I couldn't use 2.4Ghz until I turned on my XBOX, then my laptops connected.  Weird.

Link>Welcome!
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.

WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz.
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.

What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any close neighbors with 2.4Ghz house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Thank you for your help.

Hi, I am Marco from Genoa, Italy (sorry for my english) and I had same problems of wireless drops of raja.

I tried everything, all the advices of Furry of this thread but with no results.
At last I decided to turn off DHCP and now using my clients with static IP now all is rock solid (to be honest i don't know why...) ;D

I hope this can help someone.
best regards

1) Hardware Version: A1  Firmware Version: 1.03
2) Factory reset? Yes
3) I have now 6 wireless devices connected, 1 ps3, 1 tv, 2 tablets, 1 smartphone and 1 pc and now with static IP no more problems of wireless drops

At first I tought that the issue was in my cordless phones but after turn off all the phones I had always problems; personally I think there are some problems in this firmware 1.03 with the DHCP of the router.

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

No routers in my area. I tried on the router DHCP reserve but nothing changed, always problems of wireless drops, solved only with static IP on all my clients....so, as I said, I think there are big problems in this firmware with the DHCP of the router because it's absolutely impossible that all my clients have problems with the protocol DHCP.

You might try this> Turn off all devices and re-enabled DHCP. Start with 1 device, reserve the IP address for the one device. Check the connection and internet connection. Reboot. After the reboot, turn on a wireless device. Again, add a reservation, and reboot. Check wireless connection and internet. Graduate turning on devices and adding the reservation. While you are doing this, see if you notice the Wifi drop. Might find maybe that one of your devices could be causing it?

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Otherwise I'll recommend that you phone contact DLink support for your region and get this router into RMA.

I personally am currently using this model router with v1.03 and have not experienced any problems with it. All my devices are using Reserved IP addressing ON the router and devices are set up to auto obtain IP addressing. Has been very stable. Many others are using this router and FW version as well. Although there maybe some differences between North America and EU FW.  :-\

ok. to be honest I'd like to install the 1.0 EU or other firmware and make some tests...to see if the problem is the router or in the firmware EU...

You should be able to downgrade to shipping FW if it's available. I see that v1.01b09 is listed on the UK site. If you decide to, please use the following:
FW Update Process

Keep us posted.
