possible to turn 810L into wifi adapter for laptop
« on: August 09, 2017, 11:37:28 AM »

Hey all,

I have a DIR 810L   that is just sitting around doing nothing since I nolonger have the network that it was turned into a extender for.

can I reconfigure it to work as a wireless adapter for my acer laptop whose builtin wifi has stopped working?

way back in the day with a different laptop I was able to bridge the ethernet and wifi adapters of my old toshiba laptop to get my xbox 360 online.

Not with OEM FW, maybe with OpenWRT or DD-WRT.

I believe I loaded mine up with OpenWRT..

No, it's not, you use the OEM UI to load the FW file and it take over form there. Just be aware that you need to load the FACTORY or OEM to WRT file first. Don't load the systemupgrade first or you'll break the router recovery mode and if it becomes bricked for any reason, you won't have a way to recover or load back OEM FW. Besure to ready all of the instructions first.

I'll have to look at mine again, I may have loaded DD-WRT.

Its supported on there site:
http://dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database

Usually WRT has bridge features which would work for your needs.

It should still be setup as an extender so i will have to reset it to oem factory before doing anything.  I cannot even remember if it has a password (it shouldn't as it's a pain to remember years later).

Ya man. Factory reset the 810L and start from scratch. I would use IE11 or FF for working on any FW processes. Disable any PC security software whlie your doing this.

I have Edge (probably IE11 too), firefox, and chrome on the laptop.

I will check the model version when I get home.

You'll need to look at WRTs web site information on wireless bridging and where to configure that. They should all info on all of that.

its possible that i didn't explain things properly, i want to turn the thing into a external wifi adapter, to use to connect to networks with in place of the one that broke in my laptop.

I know i can go out and buy usb ones, i had one for my desktop computer by tplink which i sold with the computer, as my laptop doesn't have many usb ports I would like to use the ethernet port, and the router seems like a good way of making use of it.

Wireless bridging with the 810L if WRT supports it will be the only option you have to use it like an adapter. The laptop would need to be connected via it's LAN cable to the back of the 810L while in bridge mode. WIreless bridge mode is similar to having a USB adapter in that the 810L would connect to any wireless SSID name and PW. Then any LAN cable connections get the traffic passed to the connected devices.

I brought out my 810L with DD-WRT loaded on it.

I see the following modes,
AP, Clent, AdHOC, Repeater and Repeater Bridge. I presume that Client mode maybe the one your looking for. Found under the wireless tab.
