Hello, I am Tomswamm, and I am unfortunately having a rather bothersome problem. I have trouble adding my computers to my network. I had trouble earlier with my modem, and I contacted support, and I was told to return my router to it's factory settings, meaning hold down the reset button and all. After that, while trying to connect to the router, I was prompted to create a new network, and so I did. My computer successfully connects to the internet, but my other ones are not able to access the internet via the router's new network. Should I go into my router with the Ethernet cable and do some changes? Any thoughts? Thanks! Oh and I am rather unskilled when it comes to technical computer terminology.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
6" minimum safe distance between devices.

Hello, and thanks for responding,

Which one would show my hardware information? would it be H/W? If so, it is C2.
The firmware version is 3.08 2009/02/10
I am located in North Florida

ISP is cable
I have an old Motorola Surfboard model number SB5120
I think I have dynamic IP addressing
I don't know where to look for ISP Modem service link speeds

I am using Mixed 802.11n, 802.11g, 802.11b (if those are the wireless modes), but I will try n and g only
I have had channel 6 selected already
I was using wpa2 first, but it changed to wpa personal
No cordless phones, we don't have a house phone
no other routers

I am also 17, so I am not entirely experienced with this, but I believe it is a wireless issue. Only the computer I used to create the network can wirelessly connect, my other ones cannot seem to join the network.

Thank you!
I

Ok, let us know how it goes.

One thing you can test, disable the security on the router Wifi temporarily and test to see if the others connect to the router then. If so, turn security back on.

ok, this is really weird. Nothing worked, so I rebooted my router to factory settings again, and I created the network via a different computer. I created the network and the wifi works on all of the computers, except for the first one that worked previously. I am guessing that my computer (the only one that worked with the wifi earlier) has some kind of administrative privileges that wont allow it to join this new network for some reason....

Your setting up the router using the routers web page correct?
Ya, if all others are working now and the initial one isn't now, you'll need to review that PCs network settings. Is Administrator enabled for all users accounts on these PCs?

These routers are not dependent upon any PC or user account privileges. Just that devices authenticate correctly using the SSID and PWs.

No, I used one of my computers to connect to the router wirelessly. In the networks, the router was labeled "d-link" meaning it went back to factory settings, and once I connected, it said "This network has not been created" or something along those lines. Yes, each PC is Administrator enabled, but I will check out my pc, because it seems to me that the router sees my pc as the router admin. When I create a new network using my pc, only my pc can use it, and no others, but when I try to join the network that the other pcs in the house use, it wont let me.

OK so changing the SSID name from dlink to something else, say tomswamm and using default modes and security and you reboot the router, this one PC can connect to it but the others can't?

When you save settings and reboot the router, I would reboot all PCs as well and make sure that any prior WiFi settings on the PCs are cleared. All PCs should see the new SSID name and be able to connect to the router using the PW given.

I rebooted the router to factory settings, and using my laptop, when I created the network on it, only I was able to connect to it, and none of my other computers could.

When I rebooted my router to factory settings again, I used a different laptop to create the network once again, however all of my other computers could connect to the network created by one of my other laptops, except my main one, which connected the first time around.

I have rebooted my pc many times, and yet, this one wont connect....I will try to figure it out somehow. In any case, thank you very much

Ya I think something on the one PC is going on. I've never seen this behavior before. Very odd.

Hope you find out what it is. Visit again if you need more help and information.

Good Luck.

thanks a bunch, I know for a fact that it is only on my home router that I have this problem, for I brought my laptop to work, and it connects to my work network without a problem, so I am guessing the problem is with my laptop and my router back home.

Thanks again!

well I did install cirrus WiFi inspector, and apparently it says that I have 100% ping loss, and I have had a media disconnected thing under Camden, and I tried to fix that, with no luck. I might as wel return my comp to factory settings
