DIR-605L - Initial setup
« on: January 14, 2013, 09:23:58 AM »

I am not sure if anyone of you aside from me has encountered this, or if this has been discussed some time ago on this board. But let me share this anyway..

Whenever you are trying to setup the DIR-605L for the first time (assuming that you already did the correct physical connections), you will get a setup wizard on the screen. Hit next then it will allow you to select the type of Internet connection you have on your network. Mostly, we would select Dynamic IP (DHCP) and leave everything else default. After hitting next, the screen would show that the router is detecting the Internet connection then after a few seconds, you will be redirected back to the screen where you will select the Internet connection type. If you would still select Dynamic and tried to proceed, the page will still kick you back to the previous window and you're stuck with that and cannot continue.

This is very bizarre for me but this is what it fixed it for me:

1. At the Internet connection page, instead of setting it to Dynamic, set it to Static IP
2. It will of course ask for the static information. Just make it up. For example, I set the IP address to 192.168.5.x, Subnet: 255.255.255.0, Gateway: 192.168.5.x, Primary DNS: 4.2.2.2
3. Hit next
4. A screen that says "The router is detecting your Internet connection" will again appear but after a few seconds, the network settings will show up. Internet connection status will be Not connected but you dont have to worry about it for now.
5. Save the settings, then you will be logged out
6. Log back into the router using the default credentials (admin, no password)
7. The network settings will again show up, Internet connection status is still disconnected, just click Manual Setup
8. And now you are inside the router page, you can now change the connection type to Dynamic
9. Do a MAC clone (only if necessary)
10. Configure the wireless settings

Hopefully this would help someone..

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

If you have a modem with a Built in Router then it's recommended to attempt to bridge the modem first and let the DIR series router handle a DHCP connection to Cable modem or handle the PPPoE connection to a DSL modem.

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.

Sounds like when your hitting DHCP its doing a request for the MAC of the router and it fails. So it asks you again if your sure its DHCP. Your setting it to static and then cloning the MAC and changing it to what? The MAC of the PC? If so I think your ISP either has the MAC of your PC on file and won't allow a DHCP  request from anything else, or the device won't hand out a new DHCP lease until it's power cycled. So I think Furry's first three questions are important.

hi thanks for your response.. This is just a work around that I discovered and like I said I find it very unusual. I have Comcast ISP, and my modem is Arris. The reason as to why I changed the connection type from Dynamic to Static is for the setup wizard process to proceed because if I keep it on Dynamic, it won't proceed to the next phase of the setup wizard. After it would say that the setup has finished, I would log back into the router, go to the manual setup then change the connection type to Dynamic then do the rest of the configurations.

Seen many issues with Arris modems.  >:( In fact at my dads place when I was visiting and installed a external WiFi router, I had to Mac Clone the router before it would work.  :-\

What model is the Arris modem?

Let us know when you can about your model modem. The CM300 is a fairly older model.

I would suggest that you either contact your ISP and ask for a more recent, or upgraded model or if your ISP allows BYOM, get yourself into a Motorola SB 6 series modem. Either a 6120, 6121 or 6141. These are great cable modems. I have 3 of them.  ;D
