Does a smaller drive work?

You could attempt a FW update:
http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/support/product/dir-655-wireless-n-gigabit-router?revision=deu_revb (http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/support/product/dir-655-wireless-n-gigabit-router?revision=deu_revb)

If you do, please follow this:
FW Update Process (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42457.0)

Also try one of the SP utility version posted there as well.

IF you followed the FW update process it should work.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional local D-Link support office and get additional help on your router.
