No you will need to format the entire volume to add another drive.

/Bump

This still the case?

I have volume_1 as raid 5, disk 1,2 & 3 all 1tb
and volume_2 as disk 4 with 1tb

Would like to merge disk 4 into the raid...possible? Any changes on this since Dec 2009?

Yes this is still the case. You will need to reformat the RAID as 4 drives from scratch.
