Title: "fans can't rotate" error in system logs after upgrade from 1.04b3 to 1.04
Post by: UrbanDK on May 08, 2011, 12:55:28 PM
I've upgraded from the 1.04b3 firmware to the recently released 1.04 firmware.  I was not seeing this error prior to the upgrade.

When I power on the dns-343 from a shutdown, both fans are spinning.  When the unit has finished starting, I see both fans stop and the error is reported in the logs.

Help!!! how can I get this problem cleared?

Update 5/9 --------------------

I am running B1 hardware.  My temps are as follows

Front LED: 95F/35C
Disk 1:      80F/27C
Disk 2:      84F/29C
Disk 3:      80F/27C
Disk 4:      78F/26C

I am using an external fan blowing directly on the unit to keep the disks cool.

Others also experienced this same issue. See this thread in the beta forum: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=38418.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=38418.0)

Hello,

I can also confirm this. Logs are full of "fan can't rotate" entries. Are the fans supposed to stop and start according to temperature?

Also with only one drive in its running at 111/44. Is that normal, can someone else post their temps.

Thanks!

I have two DNS-343s (4 drives each). Both typically operate within the temperature range of 111/44 to 113/45, which is the same range as your unit.

For those with this issue, does it persist through a reset?

A1 or B1 hardware for both units?

If you are referring to the P/N string on the sticker on the underside of the unit, then "A1".

Yes, I've done the following to try and clear
1. reset
2. re-install firmware
3. load factory defaults

Still get error message.

Note:  When you requested a "reset", I took that to mean a soft shutdown and restart.

I performed the following type of resets in hopes of clearing the error:
1. shutdown and power off from web interface.
2. shutdown and power off from web interface then unplugged power from unit.
3. reset from web interface.

all of these did not clear the "fans can't rotate" message.

You are running the latest FW. I've been using this FW on two DNS-343s for over a week now with no other new issues other than the fan can't rotate message. You can continue using FW v1.04 and wait for an update or regress to the prior beta version - the choice is yours.

I can't think what else would be different about my one. I have been through all the settings. Does anyone else want me to pass on any settings i have configured? I can't see anything in there that could possibly affect it though.

My line of thought was that this has something to do with the settings as well.  However, considering that a number of us have completely different HDD configurations (RAID, Standard Volumes, etc) and there are so many setting permutations, we would need configurations from multiple users to weed out the cause.

I assume D-Link is trying to recreate this problem on their own since they previously asked for the DNS-343 hardware version for those of us experiencing this issue.

Since it took just under 2 years for this firmware upgrade to occur, will it take a similar amount of time for the next?

Also, could you tell your tech support (script reader) folks about this, so that they would not have me try mundane measures when this is a known problem?

Firmware v1.05b01 specifically addressed the "fans can't rotate" error (along with AFT support).

Since it took just under 2 years for this firmware upgrade to occur, will it take a similar amount of time for the next?

The last firmware update was released less than one year after the prior v1.04, not 2 years as you stated.

JavaLawyer - Where were you when I needed help?  Look at the competition...  Much more frequent (useful) updates.  Yes, you've got lots of beta updates, but getting out "stable" updates would really be a boon for the users.

Yes, there manufacturers with better support, and there are also worse. IMHO, for the DNS-343 price point, the level support is average. Functionally speaking (i.e. critical functionality), the beta updates were rather stable for the most part.

From my perspective it looks like the D-Link development team is of limited size and is required to support too many products, with emphasis on the newer product lines -- and this is why DNS-343 support has fallen to the wayside.

On the other hand..  I have a second NAS the Lenovo D400 IdeaCentre and I bought it at the end of the product life cycle.   Even during it's life cycle, it never had any updates or support or even a forum to talk about it.  However.   It's bulletproof, and a much better product than the DNS-343.

As I'm sure you know, product quality and aftermarket support hinges on the manufacturer. A mainstream name like Lenovo is competing with Dell and HP, so competitive pressure (and reputation) forces them to ensure all their products are more robust. As far as aftermarket support is concerned, I have a Netgear media player that was discontinued at least 1.5 years ago and Netgear still maintains a heavily trafficked and supported community forum the product.
