Dir655 not work normally with NFS
« on: November 07, 2007, 09:22:42 PM »

Hello!

Just find out, what dir655 work not correctly with nfs sharing. I have NAS - Qnap 209 pro, which can share files via samba and nfs and Dvico Tvix 4100 sh video player.

When tvix tryed to connect to NAS disk via nfs, - it all time causes some troubles. If I connect tvix directly to nas drive (or via second router belkin (without dir655 in network) - all work perfectly.

When dlink will add normal nfs support to DIR-655?

PS: tested on 1.05 and 1.10 firmware.

Best Regards,
Alex

To be frank, i don't think that your NFS troubles have anything to do with your router (OSI model wise) also if both are on your LAN i also don't see the firewall being the problem, what kind of problems do you have?
Have you got MAC adress restriction on? are ALL devices added to the allow table?

I have to agree with Raphie...it should´nt be the router that is causing the problem.....

You can read about NAS and Wireless routers here : http://www.smallnetbuilder.com

Hello!

Basically I have 2 routers, one is Dir655, second is belkin N1. Dir655 is setup as main gateway (internet cable plugged in to dlink router), when belkin used as secondary switch (with G wifi abilities). So belkin is connected only via local rg45 from dir655 and to all other devices. all routing at belkin is switched off (and dir655 connected as via local cable).

everything in local network, so no firewall is used here. windows xp firewall is configured for exception for nfs server.

In my network is ps3, computer, nas qnap 209pro, few notebooks and dvico tvix. Wifi for N devices shared by dlink, Wifi for G devices shared by belkin. DHCP is handled by dlink (it done really very useful).

Configuration

1. main computer (have nfs server), qnap 209pro (nfs server) connected to dlink via 1gb cable.
2. belkin n1 router connected to LOCAL port (no firewall) from dlink.
3. belkin share internet for notebooks via wifi G. Tvix is connected to belkin router via local port.

dlink upnp enabled.

Trouble with NFS is next :

1. if I use tvix to connect to any notebook (connected via wifi to belkin) - nfs sharing work perfect.
2. if I use tvix to connect to qnap or main computer - nfs working very unstable.

but :

1. if I connect qnap 209 pro directly to tvix (setting ip addresses of course) - everything work perfect.
2. if I connect computer directly to tvix = nfs work perfect.
3. if I change dlink to belkin router (using all gateway functions) - all is work perfect.

Trouble with nfs connected happen ONLY if data stream goes via DLINK 655!

What i mean under very unstable :

1. I able to connect to nfs server from tvix when connection goes via dlink.
2. SEEK is goes very slow
3. datastream is very slow.

Basically it mean what open any video is very long - 2-3 minutes, and after movie is start - all the time happen delays. Like 'wait - waiting for more datas'. It not happen when used belkin router or direct connection. So trouble here is DLINK!

ps : no mac addresses restruction configured, only dhcp server allocate ips by mac address, but have also pool. Trouble not here.
all devices in allow table.

Best Regards,
Alex

Eliminate everything but the 655, your computer and the NAS. Does it operate normally?

yes, everything operate normally at this case.
Any direct connection (nas->tvix, nas->computer) work perfect. Also work fine via belkin router. But if dir655 as router - start that trouble with nfs.

Thats a difficult problem to troubleshoot. It sounds like a negotiation issue between the router and the switch you are using.
Is the switch layer 2 or 3?

Let me see if I understand everything correctly

This is assuming all wired connections and always using a single router, no daisy chains.
NAS -> Computer: OK
NAS -> Tvix: OK
NAS -> N1 -> Computer: OK
NAS -> N1 -> Tvix: OK
Computer -> N1 -> Tvix: ?
NAS -> 655 -> Computer: Problems
NAS -> 655 -> Tvix: problems
Computer -> 655 -> Tvix: ?

Seeing that the Belkin N1 is only a 10/100mbs device, it can be that one or your 1gbps devices is having issues auto negotiating with the 655. Try to lock down the port speed of devices to 1000mbps, if that still has problems, lock down to 100mbps for testing purposes.

Computer -> N1 -> Tvix:  = OK, trouble with nfs only.
NAS -> 655 -> Computer: OK (only trouble with nfs)
NAS -> 655 -> Tvix: (smb ok, nfs= trouble)
Computer -> 655 -> Tvix: (smb ok, ftp ok, nfs=trouble).

Already tryed it (limit all devices to 100mbps) but nothing was changes.

Again - it trouble with nfs protocol only that comes via DIR655. Everything another work well.

Best Regards,
ALEX

not sure. I using like switch belkin N1. It have 100mbps ethernet ports.

But trouble with nfs protocol via dir655 exists also if I completely remove belkin N1 and connect computer, nas & tvix directly to dir655.

Alex

hmm strange i have thpo synology nasses and the dir-655 and two asus routers. i don't see anny problems with nfs and samba and so on? maybe its the belkin what is the problem. Connect everfything only with the dir-655 and then do some test.

Something you could attempt Disable UPNP on the DIR-655 also removing the Belkin for any further testing would probably speed testing as it can cause irregularities with the auto negotiation.
