Title: Is firmware v1.15 stable?
Post by: HankRiker on January 08, 2009, 01:36:11 AM
Hello,

I have several D-Link routers, and although I had a failure of a DGL-4300, I still think that D-Link offers superior quality and features for the price.

I bought a DGL-4500 about a month after release, and love it... But the Shareport technology would be lovely to exploit.

Thing is, I'm still running on v1.02 of the firmware, as I've read so many horror stories here and on Broadband reports.

So. My question is, is the DGL-4500 v1.15 firmware solid enough to migrate to, without remorse? I don't have to support any game consoles, but I do have a mixed environment of several wireless notebooks...

Advise? Warnings? The number of complaints has died down enough with the release of v1.15, so I thought it would be worth asking.

Thanks in advance.

Seems to be ok if you don't have a PS3 to connect to it.

I would stay at 1.02,  the reason the complaints have died down is because it seems to have fallen on deaf ears, nothing has been done about any of the complaints if you look at the threads there have been no solutions to most of the complaints.  I would stay at 1.02, Lucky you I am at 1.15 and [exploitive deleted] it. Everytime I have to make a change it requires me to reset the router load from the file and then make the changes then reboot it.  If I go back into the gui to make changes on the fly it wont take them without a hard reset and a file load.  Stay at 1.02, fyi not using it for console gaming, only pc gaming

I wish I was still running 1.02. :'(

Wow. Thanks gang... I guess I'll stay at 1.02.

Makes me worry about the girl to whom I recommended a new DGL-4500 to though.

I hope that wasn't a mistake.

Tell me more of this restart problem. We have MANY units running the 1.15 code, and this is the first I've heard of this little doozy. Please be descriptive and as detailed as possible. I'll attempt to recreate the error.
If I can not, I'll want to replace your unit so I can test the failing one.

For me, 1.15 is stable enough.  Doesn't have much problems.  However, one of the severe problems still is with the gaming, and port forwarding and dropped connections.  1.02 is fine, and I would stick with that too.  The rule "don't fix it if it ain't broken" applies here.  If no problems, then simply don't upgrade.

Well, I have been somewhat concerned about the DNS exploit that I am assuming was quietly patched in v1.12, which would be (if true) why flashing back to v1.02 would be prevented.

But I use OpenDNS, and have tested myself several times, and have yet to see any exploiting behavior.

So, between that and the new SharePort support, I have been considering the upgrade, but I don't want to have to deal with some of the issues mentioned here either, so ... I guess I'll just keep my eyes open.

Thanks.

Lycan.

You can have mine... It does the samething.  I can't make any changes without resetting the router.  If you have a search in this forum, you will find many people with this issue.  JackUup23 and I are not the only ones.

If you read this topic http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=3188.0 you will get a very good idea of all the issues still happening.

1.15 is NOT stable, stay at 1.02

The DNS exploits were patched at both the ISP level and on the private network side (your home network, etc).

So, of course you may not see it...however, there are other exploits for the router that have been patched and it doesn't hurt to upgrade.  It's your choice however..

It does not matter if the DNS Exploits were fixed at the ISP level and at the Operating System level.

All those fixes did were to close those loop holes.

But having a router with a vulnerable firmware (DNS Exploit Vulnerability) still leaves you vulnerable.

As to Exploit Behavior, a vulnerable router would not have a Bad DNS or any bad behaviors. Instead, it would be open to Attack from the outside. These attacks generally use worms or they may comprise of a direct hack attempt. When successfully attacked, the DNS server entries in the router get changed to that of a Rogue (bad) DNS server and your password gets changed to lock you out.

This way all your traffic goes directly through a rogue server meaning that anything you do online may get captured, you may find links getting redirected to look alike (phishing) sites, encounter DNS injection of pop ups and encounter any number of other unwanted garbage.

Generally speaking, people who are usually affected are those who leave their routers set to factory defaults or use weak passwords.

Those who take the time to properly secure the routers usually are not affected by the DNS Exploit.

Trouble is, too many people don't know enough to secure their routers.

Thanks Lycan I appreciate what ever help you can be, what happens is I log into the router, (with 1.15) If I make any changes and then reboot, then I go back in and the changes did not stick.  Now I have a file with the settings I like created, so if I do a hard reset, log into the router then load the file, then make any additional changes such as changing the time or setting up a game rule save the changes and just reboot the router (no hard reset) the changes stick, its like it only gives me one chance to get all the settings I like only one reboot allowed.  If I want to change anything then I have to follow this procedure the router will not let me any other way, which is a pain, because I have a gaming rule setup for COD4 on pc and I dont like to have the ports open all the time, just when I am playing so I have a file that has the gaming rule and a file that doesnt have the gaming rule, instead of being able to go into the GUI and enable or disable the gaming rule, I have to do a hard reset and load whatever file I need.  Note once these settings are loaded the router seems to work just fine.  PS I dont know why in my first post about this it says expletive deleted, I know I didnt cuss, anyway any help is appreciated and I would love to send mine into you for testing, let me know thanks.

Well all I know is that many people have been getting different results from teh 1.15.  For me it is rock solid and the only issue I have with the shareport is that it wil not work under Vista 64.  As for your COD4 rules um, I thought I was paranoid about internet security but that is silly.  One thing I have noticed with an earlier build of my os is that the browser did not reflect the correct information till i hit F5 once or twice.  Do not know why and I blame Windows for this and not Dlink and the code.  As for performance it is superb compaired to my earlier Netgears and is even faster than the smoothwall I installed.  I am always concerned about heat build up seeing as I have my router next to a heating duct.  but so far I ahve had no restarts.

Hope this helps.

You may want to try to clear your browser's cache. If you have Firefox hold down: Ctrl + Shift + Del and select cache.

IE7:
Step1: On the Tools menu, click Delete Browsing History
Step2 :  In the Temporary Internet Files section, click Delete files, and then click Yes. In the Cookies section, click Delete Cookies, and then click Yes. In the History section, click Delete History, and then click Yes.

Oh yeah your berating definitely helps,  First of all open port is an open port,   second I should not have to do a hard reset and load a file everytime I want to change something whether it is closing a port with a gaming rule or changing the time, you seem to be one of the few that has one that works well.

I personally am running 1.12 and have no problems with my PS3 connected to it. DMZ is my main comp so I use UPnP for the ps3. I have no plans to get 1.13 or 1.15. Just my two cents worth.

On a side note, what you pay is what you get. After trying several budget routers (Belkin, Linksys, Netgear) I stepped up to a the DGL-4500 and its been a network-gasm ever since.

Ignore him, 1.15 is problematic for many people including myself.  I rolled back to 1.12 so I can enter information and make changes without resorting to extreme measures.

The varied results that you're seeing here is the reason I've requested for a few unit's that are suffering from the issue to be sent to me for testing.
we will get to the bottom of this if it kills me.

For me my problems started in firmware v1.12 and also with the latest editions of firmware.  One is wireless drops out (very few and after being on for a long time and/or possibly moving large files over network happened once), second lag on games sometimes (system link and online gaming), third wireless signal strength is less than half (my brother had his xbox 360 on the ground with firmware v1.02.  Afterwards, he had to put it on the table and still has a weak signal).  I posted my problems awhile ago ( http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=2608.0 ) hope it helps.

P.S.  I also tried all the tricks on the forums and still no improvement, current firmware is v1.15, and I have one Cipher Type on my router.

Lycan, to recreat this problem please try turning off the radio for the wireless. After you complete this and the nest time you go back into the router you will find that you are unable to turn it back on or make any other changes without a hard reset. Sadly I didn't find this forum until after I flashed from 1.02 to 1.15. If I had read about this issue I night still be with 1.02 even with the exploit.

I also made a post about this in your sticky here  http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=3099.0  . My post is the last one on the first page.

I hopr this helps to get this nailed down and maybe even fixed!

Thanks boss

I have this same issue.  Once wireless is disabled, no further changes can be made in the router configuration pages until it is reset to defaults.  If a change is attempted, the router immediately reboots without warning and the change is not saved.

The workaround I devised for this is to set a schedule so that the wireless is on only from 12:00 to 12:01 AM on Sundays.

Thus, wireless is only on one minute per week, and I can still make changes to the router settings.

I have the same problem.  If the wireless is turned off, you cannot turn the wireless back on, or change any settings without a hard reset.  Which makes it impossible to connect my phone to that router.  The phone will only connect if the router was powered on with the wireless off, then enabling the wireless.

Stay at 1.02, I am glad I have.

It's sad that I have to use a 1.5 year old firmware, beause DLink can't get their code monkeys to make a firmware worth a **** on this.

I have now stopped recommending DLink routers due to the firmware issues on this model, and others I have read about, since if you buy one you're stuck with a newer problematic version.  It's sad, as their products started out awesome. (re: 655, 4500, etc)
Granted I don't know much about the newer 655 releases, heck it could be fixed now, but just have a bad taste in my mouth currently.

FWIW:  New (I saw new as I purchased it this past Jan) DGL-4500 HW Rev A1 FW default 1.02 that I immediately updated to 1.15 - I have not had issues at all.  Then again, I don't have a PS3 to plug into it, only 3 computers, each attache to its own Gigabit Ethernet switch, and a couple of networked printers, and my HP Tablet-PC with Wireless N native that I use here and there (I rarely use it at home, mostly out of the home) and a pair of iPAQs - HX2490Bs (which force me to use WEP since they supposedly support WPA but the connection fails 100% of the time if I switch over to WPA).

Seeing the commentary here makes me want to dig out the laptop more often - unfortunately, testing is out of the question ATM b/c both laptop and my personal desktop are running Windows 7 (build 7068, 32bit on laptop and 64bit on desktop) and W7 supposedly has issues with dropping connections for some folks on wireless (which I have also never experienced....)

Well it has been a while for me and thought I would chime in.  After my initial purchance I went ahead and installed 1.15. to date these are my only issues.

Shareport is not reliable so I do not use it.

That is about it.

I have 2 laptops and a Wii that are wireless
a gaming systems that loves to download and make Comcast cry
a win XP machine for the kids that really houses 600GB of movies.

All in all I am pretty pleased.  Sure there are things I would change but if it aint broke.

If you just look back a few pages you will see a certain pattern when it comes to those having problems with the DGL-4500. It’s gaming on the PS3 and PC with some 360 connection issues as well. Almost everything else the router does a good job with. Also most noticed a change when updating the f/w from 1.02 to…well anything after it. Sadly when looking through some posts, many problems never get a fix and some just seem to give up. This is especially true for PS3 related issues when users update from f/w 1.02.

I’m just looking forward to the next dgl-xxxx (if there is a next one), or just the upcoming extreme n 450.

I just wanted to say that 1.16b3 seems to be the best post 1.02 fw I've used so far.  If you haven't tried it you might want to give it a go before declaring the 4500 to be a total loss and give up on it.  If you're still on 1.02 don't you dare flash to anything yet.

I've been on f/w 1.16b not too long after it's release and didn't see a difference performance wise with PSN. It's been almost 7 months after 1.12 put the steel boots on the dgl-4500 I have, kinda hard not to be looking forward to the next one in the series.

I see the claims of those that have 1.15 and don't have issues with their PS3. Yet something tells me if they ever tried 1.02 and then any f/w after, they would notice a difference right away.

I know dlink is fixing what they can when they can. I guess the issues I have just happen to be on the bottom of that to do list.

Thanks for the post, and I agree.

I have read much that makes post v1.02 sound fine, but ... so many more posts of folks having issues, that I've decided to just keep the current firmware, till either I replace the router, or something is released without all the issues.

I'm on 1.15 as well and experiencing the same things mine freezes up every couple of minutes and then goes into restarts after I unplug it for 10 seconds mainly when I try to play Xbox live but more or less randomly. If I cycle it on and off sometimes I can get it to stay up and once I start playing Xbox live I can somewhat lock it online until I quit then it goes back to the same old same old. I wish Lycan would trade me a router because it is quiet frustrating to be bumped offline so much so often. Every f/w since 1.02 has done it and even at 1.02 it wasn’t bad but still restarted randomly at least then it was bearable.

I bought mine (DGL4500)back in Jan,2009...

I'm still using FW1.02 without any problems by far...

as long as I tell, not more than 5 times it resets itself in totally 4 months usage...

I would like to try the newest FW releases ...but with a router that cost well over US$150+,

I expect it's stable and reliable~~

I'm not gonna take the chance if it may screw thing up since I can't go back to default FW (FW1.02) if that's the case...
