Title: Router stopped working after restoring settings
Post by: Hexter on August 17, 2013, 05:35:11 PM
Hello,

I have a D-Link DSL-2740B DSL modem/WiFi router.  It worked fine until I forgot the password.  So I reset the unit, logged in and restored the settings from a backup file and now the router will not work.  The only thing I can think of is that I changed the backup file by removing the password and something got borked.  What can I do to fix this?

I can't even get a login screen when I point my browser to 192.168.1.1.  It tells me that the connection is refused.  There is no WiFi and the only lights on are the power light and port 1.  Everything else is dark.  No WiFi, no DSL, no Internet.

Thank you.

Link>Welcome! (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=41537.0)

What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8 or 9, set compatibility mode and test again.
Try turning off these features in Chrome:
Top right corner, little bars for options > Settings > Settings (on left) > Show advanced settings.
Uncheck these:
Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar
Predict network actions to improve page load performance
Enable phishing and malware protection

I would try a factory reset with one PC wire LAN connected to the modem and use IE or FF to try to access the modems web page. If you can access it, set up the modem from scratch and do not load the saved configuration file.

Eureka! After searching the net for some time I stumbled upon the solution: An alternate method to reset the unit, which reset it to factory settings. Here's how it works. I held the reset button for 10 seconds, then, without letting go I turned the router off for 5 seconds. When turned on I let go of the reset button and voila, the sucker works now.  I was even able to recover settings from the original file (not the modified one without the password).  Now if I can only remember what the password was I will be happy.

Thank you FurryNutz for your reply but I got the solution now.

Awesome, glad it worked and thanks for sharing the info.
I recommend setting up the modem from scratch and get it all configured to your needs. Then use IE or FF to save off a new clean copy of the save config file.

Enjoy.  ;)

I figured out the password issue.  Instead just removing the password I removed the whole  <X_BROADCOM_COM_LoginCfg> section from the backup file and restored the settings.  This restored all settings except the password and whether or not I want the capcha.  I was then able to login using the default password and change the password (and this time I wrote it down) and capcha setting, without having to reconfigure the whole thing from scrach.

I recommend disabling the CAPTCHA if you have this option. It's on DIR series routers however not enabled by default. If it is, we usually disable it as it's really not needed. Up to you though. Enjoy.
