Title: Help: Samsung HD204UI 2TB Error
Post by: dcmetro on October 21, 2010, 05:17:08 PM
Folks: I just bought the Samsung HD204UI 2TB drive for DNS-323 to replace an old drive. Each time I try to format it, I get a format error after 2% and NAS wants to restart with the same result.

Error: Hard Drive(s) Formatting Failure. (Error Code:112).

Any ideas why this might be happening? Your help shall be greatly appreciated.

Take the drive out and test it with the disk Manufacturer's diagnostics connected to a local desktop.  Make sure the drive is 100% before you expend any additional effort in the NAS.

Have no desktop that I can attach this drive to. Only thing I have is the DNS-323. Anything that you or someone else can recommend?

What firmware version are you running on the NAS? You need an up-to-date firmware to support 2TB drives. Do a factory reset after an upgrade.

I was able to get it to work. Seems to be a bug with software. It would not format with 2nd drive in the NAS. downgraded the firmware to 1.08 and took the other drive out.  Then it worked. Now both work fine. Wondering when D-Link will fix that bug.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Strange one, I didn't have any issues formatting my 203WI when there was another drive in the NAS on 1.08 firmware.

I just formatted my HD204UI on firmware 1.08 as EXT2.
No problem with the formatting. Now copying files to it.
Though it works, I am just wondering that it being a 4k hard disk, is it efficient compared to the older 512b ones.

FWIW, the copying speed to the 323 was 23mb/s. From 323 to PC was 32mb/s.

Not bad I think.

Ah, didn't realise it was a 4k sector drive. Who knows - Dlink say they're unsupported.

Just be careful with your 4K sector drives. Make sure you keep a backup of your files for several months as these drives often degrade after a time. This is because Linux/Unix was never meant to handle 4K sectors.

The drives may appear OK for a while but you may see problems down the track. You can research this issue and there are some work arounds such as using fdisk with certain switches to format drives in compatibility mode. If you already have WD's you can install a 2.54MM type jumper on pins 7 & 8 before installing the drive into a NAS system. This puts the drive into compatibility mode. This should improve performance in a NAS system since the partition starting on sector 63 is then fooled into using a sector (64) aligned on the 4k boundaries.

WARNING !  Installing a jumper on a drive that already contains data will likely result in data loss so back up your files first.

I have succeeded in doing this and have had file integrity for a couple of months. But as a professional system integrator and engineer, I will not recommend this to any of my clients.

There's a firmware bug:

http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/smartmontools/wiki/SamsungF4EGBadBlocks

Article linked in above says (Google translation):

"it seems that only the F4 Spinpoint EcoGreen with 2 TB of capacity to be affected. The company Samsung and the smartmontools developers are currently investigating the problem."

I just bought five of these drives.. I guess I won't be putting them in the dlinks.

Do these drives affect all NAS or just Dlinks? In particular, I have a synology DS209.
