Connection drops with DIR-860
« on: May 14, 2016, 09:06:12 AM »

Hello,
I bought a DIR-860 B1 a few days ago, with fw. 2.03, region EU (Hungary). Previously I used a TP-Link TL-WR740N router (but I can use it until tomorrow), so I can made some comparison.
Basically my biggest problem is when I start to use the internet with high bandwidth, the router drops the current connection (most of the times). I mean the speedtest stops, the downloading with browser stops and later restarts, the downloading with torrent stops and later restarts continuously. The problem is on 5GHz and also on 2.4GHz.
So I am very disappointed, because my older TP-Link router didn't made these stops, and that was 4 times cheaper!!! I placed the routers next to each other, and my computer was 5 meters far from them.

My wifi card is Intel AC 7260 with the latest driver.

I made some screen recording to prove the error, during speedtest, then during download with torrent, then during download with browser, and all of them with the TP-Link router and with the D-Link router. During the test the wifi connection looked stable.

I uploaded here:
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B1OD1mSflp5oU0tCeDdRTTFGTzA&usp=sharing

Thank you!

FYI:
Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.
- Turn off TrueGigaBit Routing under Setup/Internet/Manual for those routers that have this feature for testing. NO OPTION
- Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel. For the DGL-5500, review this for Streamboost information and settings: Furry's DGL-5500 Review CAN'T TURN OFF QoS, JUST I DIDN'T ADD MY COMPUTER TO THE QoS LIST
- Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP. NO OPTION
- Enable or Disable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) and test under Setup/Internet/Manual. Disable may help with speed performance on higher speed ISP services. NO OPTION
- Turn on DNS Relay  under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual. ENABLED
- Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives. I THINK IT'S NOT EFFECT FOR MY PROBLEM
- Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address. OK
- If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only under Setup/IPv6. OK
- Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test. NO OPTION FOR Endpoint Independent AND DISABLED SPI
- Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used. ENABLED ALL OF THEM
- Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced. NO OPTION
- WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed SET TO AUTO
- Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. The DST setting is only needed in the NA region. Tools/Time. I THINK IT'S NOT EFFECT FOR MY PROBLEM

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
- Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Ensure that different SSID names are used between each WiFi 2.4/5Ghz radios. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighbouring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual. I THINK IT'S NOT EFFECT FOR MY PROBLEM
- What wireless modes are you using? AC AND N
- 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N or AC on 5Ghz? TRIED, NOT HELPED
- Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only. SET TO AUTO
- Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. Try channel 48 or 149 on 5Ghz. DIDN'T CHANGED THE CHANNEL BECUASE IT WAS THE ONLY ONE ROUTER ON 5GHz
- What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to tryTPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES. SET TO AUTO
- What wireless devices do you have connected? COMPUTER
- Ensure any devices with WiFi adapter drivers are updated. I USE THE LATEST DRIVER FROM INTEL
- Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences? NO
- Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many? Use v3, its free. IT WAS THE ONLY ONE ROUTER ON 5GHz
- If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless. I TURNED OFF HT 20/40 Co-existence
- Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless. NO OPTION
Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless. I THINK IT'S NOT EFFECT FOR MY PROBLEM
For routers with Smart Connect Technology , try disabling this feature and test. Under Wireless. NO OPTION

I have cable internet (Digi), without any modem (I got only the UTP cable from the Digi's switch in the building).
I have 100Mbit/s downlink and 50MBit/s uplink.

And I never had a problem with the quality of the internet service.

Do you get the same problem if you download on LAN wired connections?

Issues with home class routers is that they have limited total connections that torrents are notorious for hogging up. You might try to throttle back the torrent DLs and manage how they are using bandwidth.
Torrent FAQ

Disable DNS Relay as well.

I tested it, I got the same problem on wired LAN.

And as you can see on the video, at the first and the second time when stopped the torrent download, there was only ~22 connection. My very cheap TP-Link router can handle several 100 of connections without problems, so I think your more expensive (and much more smarter) router should handle at least 100 connection at the same time.

And I tried them with disabled DNS Relay but not helped.

You might try to factory reset, then manually re-load the FW, factory reset then set up from scratch then test the connection again via LAN wired.

Should this fail, I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

I tried all of them. Factory reset, upload firmware again, I tested the wan network with PPoE and with DHCP, but doesn't help.

But one of my colleague has the same router, I will ask from him for a test on next week.

You might take your router over to his network and test.

Yes, but I hadn't time for testing the router and posting the results here until today.

So, I got my colleague's DIR-860 router and I got the same problems. So the problem is not my faulty router. And I asked him to do some test with speedtest.net and he got the same error as me with his own computer. Here I guessed the problem is in the firmware.

After that I flashed DD-WRT firmware to my router. With the default settings I got very bad wireless performance, but after I set manually the settings I got (almost) as good wifi performance as the stock D-Link firmware. It's under testing but it seems it solved my problems.  8)

Few days later I will come back and posting my results.
