DIR-855 and DAP-1522 // Poor performance
« on: August 27, 2011, 11:57:01 AM »

Hi. I have recently bought the DIR-855 and has set it up with a D-Link DAP-1522 Wireless N DualBand Access Point (in bridge mode) at the 5Ghz band (other equipment using the 2.4 GHz band).

The DIR-855 and DAP-1522 are placed 10 meters apart, and there is almost line of sight between them (no walls, only open door).

At the best i get 70 % signal, but the rate is very unstable, all from 6 Mbps to 120 Mbps.

To be honest I expected more from this equipment.

Is there anything I can do in setup to make in better?

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP,  WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal  and Cipher type to AES only if your device support this.

What HW version is your router? ---> A3
What FW version is currently loaded? --->1.21 EU

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
---> All ISP topics are considered non applicable because I am talking about the WLAN set up in my house.

---> Done, but no effect

What wireless modes are you using? ---> Single mode N " the 5 GHz band.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N? ---> Tried different modes without any improvement.
What security mode are you using? WEP,  WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal  and Cipher type to AES only if your device support this.
---> WPA2 Only and AES Cipher selected

I have placed the DIR-855 1.5 meters from det DAP-1522. I then get 100 % signal rate and speed at more than 200 Mbps, but when I move the equipment 5 meters apart, still line of sight, I get 74 % signal rate and same speed. This is OK, but when I go 10 meters apart, the signal drops to 40 % and the speed is stable around 40 Mbps.

I really expected more from the D-link equipment... I can not see what more I can do... except from using wire...

Well you have to understand that these devices are limited by the power output of the radios and really don't go that far, specially on 5Ghz and if external conditions are well. How far can you get on signal if you switch to 2.4Ghz on Singe N at 10Meters?

I think your trying to place the 2 devices to far apart. Seems like your trying to extend the range of the DAP as far as it can however the distance in between is too far. I think your best bet would be 5 meters or less.
