880L doesn't wake workstation over VPN connection
« on: January 20, 2015, 01:49:54 PM »

Another bottleneck I run into. It appears the router doesn't wake up my work machine over VPN which R7000 used to do just fine. Is there perhaps configuration that I need to turn on?

This router may not back loop back support...

Wow, that totally sucks. I was banging my had for two days thinking that VPN was having issues... Sent email to Dlink, but I doubt this will go anywhere. I may have to go with another router as this is unacceptable.

Really hoping it's a bug or perhaps some workaround exist besides leaving computer on at all times.

thanks. tried different things, so far nothing. Also, I tried my cheap backup router Tenda and it wouldn't work either. I wonder if it's in the hardware?

Possible, you'll need to check out your Client side HW and see how it goes. Re-test the old router if possible and check configurations. Phone contact D-Link support and ask about if this router can support your configuration.

Called Dlink, they basically confirmed they don't support loop back on this router, but will add this as a feature request.

Thank you for the information. I presumed that was the issue.

Can post about it here if you like:

After getting some more information about this, it maybe possible to get this going with out loopback. I would investigate using Virtual Server and Firewall features and test by adding some rules and configurations. We believe that using these features should help you get this going...

Thank you for links, but I tried disabling firewall on pc and in the router. I am not sure which ports I need to port forward/virtual server though. Would that be port 9?

When saying "It appears the router doesn't wake up my work machine over VPN which R7000 used to do just fine.", I guess you mean you use the 'QuickVPN' feature of the DIR-880L to access your LAN via an L2TP over IPsec VPN? Just to be sure and have a common understanding of what we talk about.

If so, I would assume your VPN client gets an internal IP address that is out of the IP address range of your home LAN? If so, your VPN client is logically a member of your home LAN and hence it should be enough to configure your WOL tool on your VPN client to send the WOL magic packet via standard broadcast in order to wake up your work machine.

No, I didn't use QuickVPN, I am not actually sure what it is for I am assuming it's to VPN to my LAN from outside. I have VPN configured on my home pc which I use to connect to my workstation at work.

I did try sending magic packets using couple of tools and disabling firewall as well.

What a complete misunderstanding!!!

Hence, your DIR-880L is just a VPN pass thru device that has absolutely nothing to do with WOL magic packets (it can't even see them because you send them thru the VPN). Instead it is the router/VPN gateway at your work that has to forward/transform your WOL magic packets to an ethernet broadcast after they come out of the VPN (given your workstation at work sits in a LAN segment directly connected to that remote VPN gateway, otherwise interim IP routers would have to support directed broadcast forwarding). So consult your network administrator at work.

I am not expert in the networking,  but bottom line the issue lies with this router. I did not have to contact any administrators when I was using last two Netgear routers R6300 & R7000 for the past 3 years the same way and I didn't even have to configure anything because they didn't have any issues wake up my workstation. Btw we do have a work policy to have workstations  in sleep mode. For now I am having to email my coworkers and ask them to wake up my PC.
