download & upload speed dropped
« on: January 06, 2013, 01:53:52 PM »

When I bypassed the router and connect my pc to the cable modem directly, my download and upload speeds are over 20mbps/10mbps.  But when I connect my cable modem with the router, it reduced dramatically to under 10mbps/5mbps.

So the bottleneck is with the router.  How can I troubleshoot the router to remove this bottleneck please?

Thanks

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.

What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.

Set Time and Time Zone under Tools/Time.

Here are the changes I made to the settings.  The other changes are either not available or already been set

Set Time and Time Zone under Tools/Time.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

I don't see the below setting

Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.

I ran the speed test again and the download speed is still under 10mbps (9.53)

How are you determining the speeds? Try different speed testing sites and also see if your ISP has a local speed testing site to test with. Speedtest.net can have varied results.

I use Speedtest.net for both scenarios when I bypassed the router (> 20 mbps for download) and when I connect to the router (< 10 mbps).

Any other things I can try to bring up the download speed please?

Lets try this, download v2.25 FW from here:
http://us.dlink.com/products/?tab=3&pid=DIR-615&rev=DIR-615_revB

Unpack the .bin file from the .zip file. Do one factory reset before sending the file using the routers web page under Tools/System. Then use the Tools/Firmware section on the routers web page to send the .bin file. Please use IE browser for this. DO not use Chrome. Let the file send then select reboot if it doesn't do it automatically. The router should reboot and come back to ready. Do one more factory reset of the router using the Tools/System section. Let it come to ready. Do not load any saved configuration files. This version Adds QoS so look under Advanced to see if QoS is added and if it's enabled or not. If it's enabled, do a quick speed test with it enabled, then do another with QoS DISABLED and see.

1) I downloaded v2.25 FW already and it's a bin file on my Windows PC now.

BTW: the link says DIR-615_revB, on my router, it only says DIR-615.  Not sure if it matters.

2) What do you mean by unpacking the .bin file from the .zip file?  I don't have a zip file, I only have a bin file.

Thanks

Try swapping cables between the modem and router?

Any chance the ISP modem can be exchanged for a newer more recent modem or model?
This is a fairly older modem and is not Mfr'd any more by AMBIT and I believe was bought out by UBEE.

I would contact TIMEWARNER ISP and see if you can install your own and I Highly recommend getting a Motorola SB 6 series modem, i.e. 6121 or 6141.

Also maybe someone can review your router settings to make sure they are set up well using teamviewer?

I'll call my ISP to ask them if they can exchange my modem with a newer one or not.

In the meantime, do you have documentation of the router's settings (screenshots are ideal) that I can verify against mine to make sure everything was set up well on my router?  I'm afraid using teamviewer might not be ideal due to time availability conflict.

Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature. Tools/Time.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Keep us posted.

Available for teamviewer most any time.
