Extreme packet loss?
« on: January 09, 2017, 03:57:21 PM »

So, my packets seem to be dropping or something. I'm not sure what is going on, but the internet will be fine for a minute and then get really really really really slow, and then boost back up for another minute. I'm not teach savvy, but I do need help.

How long have you been using this router?  Did this issue just start happening?

If there is only 1 user - is everything okay?

What speeds are you paying for with your provider?  DSL? Cable modem?  What does speedtest.net report as actual speed?

How old is the cable modem?  What model is that?

Is the unit very warm or hot to touch?  Does putting a fan on it up?  These things don't last forever - I did have a Motorola router die on me, and a DIR604 also went belly up years ago.

I've been using this router for a month or two? Yes. After a breaker in the house flipped and cut the room that has the internet plugged into it off.

There's many users? A whole family and we are all having the issue. If that's what you meant.

I think we're paying for 15 Up and 15 Down. I don't know the difference, but we have cable with them also.

Speed test: Ping 113. 10 Upload and .60 Download

I'm not sure and once again, not sure.

No. No.

.60 Download is horrible beyond belief.

You didn't state if you are on DSL or Cable or some other provider...

Make sure your connections are tight at the router box.  Use a wrench and with very little torque - tighen the connection up.  Just do a little more than what your fingers can do.

Then turn off modem. turn off router. turn on modem... wait until all lights light up... turn on router...

Any better?

If not - there might be an issue coming into the home... unless all your family are trying to netflix at the same time... then that could explain the .60 download rate...

Link>Welcome!

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy

  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Ensure any devices with WiFi adapter drivers are updated.
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use a WiFi Scanner to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.
