4 Years of Glory!
« on: August 09, 2012, 04:17:45 AM »

After 4 strong and powerful years, my DGL-4500 (Codenamed: Flagship) has died.  It granted me several glorious battles in Star Trek Online and World of Tanks today, then went for its grave.  After several attempts to revive this with hard boots and resets, it locks up and fails.  Flagship got really hot the past couple days, this week was its worst heat exposure ever, reaching well over 100F, this morning at around 2:30am it just couldn't dish out anymore greatness.

The DHCP host began having errors, the OLED display was artifacting, the device would warm up rather fast, and worst of all, it just quit working.

It still boots up trying to live, but doesn't last long.  Its a sad way to die for Flagship, but its life holds high honor.  Klingons would respect Flagship.

**please excuse my game-geek lingo, its been a very disappointing night, and i'm trying to lighten it up.

Try resetting it? Possible power supply is going bad? If not, find a used 4500 out there or time to get a DIR series router.  ::)

yeah, i've opened it up to see if there were any visual signs of heat damage, but none were seen, i removed the WiFi Atheros Card inside it and installed a fan tapped right into the power supply, i did a 1.15 firmware downgrade which has rendered almost all functions null, it still grants IP's but has no other functionality, i even tried upgrading back to 1.23NA which was futile since this downgrade hack doesn't seem to work properly, after tinkering around i have determined that the WAN/Internet port is dead, there is no user traffic through WAN it would seem the router within died leaving a 4port switch.

i have tested the power supply, idk how many amps its running but its almost at 10vdc... i have no way to get another one of these power supplies, so Flagship is dying of starvation? this will not do.  how can i fix the power supply on my own, could i build one?

i currently have a DIR-625 in its place, i'm not enjoying the lack of Gigabit Ethernet, or the fact that my Wifi device was the DIR-625 converted to AP mode, so now the wifi is greatly weakened.  but now that i have this info maybe it won't be long until Flagship is back in the frontline of my network.

Thank you JavaLawyer.

I'm going to look that over FurryNutz.
-As i'm tight for cash these days, i'll see where it goes in the next day, i'm more looking for a way to just replace the PSU module instead of buy a whole new unit.

Will keep you posted.
I found the Downgrade Firmware here.
It would seem it has worked well for many others.

Thats the same one I got a few years back to test out. It worked for me. Maybe it will bring some life back to the old girl. I would get another one anyways. Just in case. If you can get life back, then you'll have a back up ready for when old girl finally gives up the ghost.  ;)

wait is that your post?

and yes if i can find that site i used to help learn me how to convert any router into a Switch/AP, i link it here... seems to look like you just make a crossover cable and disable DHCP then connect into one of the LAN ports... i don't remember much more to this than that however, my memory isn't the best after all...

You don't need a cross over cable at all. Just turn everything off and give a new IP address to the router, usually 192.168.0.50.

No thats not mine. Just did a search.

oh, and did you mean Flagship as a AP? not sure, didn't even try, can't now after installing that fan in place of the WiFi device slot.  I suppose i could rip it out, but i did glue it in... and from what i saw there are at least 2 circuits running under it...

from previous experience though, Flagship doesn't handle Wifi... at all, locks up and dies with WiFi enabled.  Probably why i didn't even consider it... and with it being set as an AP that would defeat the purpose of having it which is two fold, A for Gaming done in the Network, and B for Gigabit.

I know that is what is said, but i guess my DIR-625 is picky, or ******ed, either way, it sat there like a tumor with a regular patch cable, made it a Crossover and zoom there it went... so... i assumed that awesome feature that auto detects and switches the port accordingly was left out of the DIR-625, but that's for another topic thread.

Oh, i thought when you said, "thats the same one I got a few years back to test out" that you had just popped yours up there lol

I use my 4500 as a 5Ghz AP for gaming, however I have 3 4500's  ;D

Well hope you an get it going, if not, find another or get into something newer. I've enjoyed all the routers i've tested so far. The DIR-825, 857, 655 and 645 can hold a candle to the 4500 in many ways. I have all of them.

O.O your house is my heaven now.

also... i have been thinking of upgrading, any suggestions? i saw a 655 which is just the same as the 4500 without the gamefuel...
(http://www.ebay.com/itm/D-Link-DIR-655-300-Mbps-4-Port-Gigabit-Wireless-N-Router-86285E-/290757125693?_trksid=p4340.m1982&_trkparms=aid%3D555001%26algo%3DPW.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D7%26meid%3D1230486907468507342%26pid%3D100009%26prg%3D1004%26rk%3D7%26#ht_500wt_1414)

But i kinda am familiar with the 4500 already and honestly i am explorative, but when it comes to the 5 others using the internet 24/7 i don't want to be "learning" a new router while they are trying to use it you know?

i found this...
think i'll just give this a go...
