[DIR-815] Firmware v1.00 Port-forwarding issues.
« on: December 06, 2012, 12:30:18 PM »

Hello, I recently upgraded my internet service and received a D-Link DIR-815 from the company as they couldn't get our older router working with the new service (4G)

My brother plays Starcraft and you have to forward ports to be able to host games for others to join, but it doesn't work.

I know how to port forward because our old router had exactly the same setup, but I have one issue though, when I look at the DIR-815's manual, and even in posts made by D-Link, I've seen them asking if the filters for the firewall are set to Endpoint Independent for UDP/TCP, now I know where this is, it's under Advanced/Firewall Settings, it even shows it there in the manual, but it's not there at all under my firewall settings, my older DIR router had it and we had no problems port forwarding, I'm not sure if it was removed in a later hardware or something?

Model: DIR-815
Hardware Version: A1

I believe there are a few DIR series routers that don't include the additional NAT options, as the 815 maybe one of them. Don't feel alone, the DIR-857 doesn't and it's one of there flag ship routers.

I would try this and see if it helps:
Gaming and QoS for XBL

Use the Single PC or Multiple PC rule example for the DIR series listed in the sticky.

Need some info from you though:
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

That's very odd though, why does the DIR-815 manual show an Endpoint Independent section if it doesn't include one?

EDIT: and btw, do you mean use the Firewall rules located in the Firewall settings page? It just seems like a huge hassle to have to forward some ports?

Let me ask you this, Do you see the same QoS rule options on your 815 as seen in the sticky?

Following that post, already hit a snag, when I try to save settings when I reserve all DHCP's, it says "Invalid Host Name" the host name is dlinkrouter, we haven't touched it so I'm not sure why it would be invalid.

Also, my Firmware version is 1.01 not 1.00, my mistake.

Here's a picture of my QoS, it's definitely not as sophisticated as the DIR-655's QoS page was.

Ok, thats was I was afraid of. Not sure why DLink didn't include the more advanced QoS and NAT options with this router, probably wanted to market a general ease of use router for those who just want to connect and go. This model is the low end for the 8 series.  ::) Seen this before in other routers. Hard to get specialized connections going or make custom settings with out having the advanced options.

Can you post what the firewall settings look like?
Is uPnP enabled under Advanced/Adv Networking?

Yeah it has uPnP enabled, it was disabled by default, and the firewall settings:

This is what the manual says my firewall settings should look like:

This is what it actually looks like.

I also have a DIR-655+ Gigabit Wireless N router that we used to use, the only reason we got this new DIR-815 from our internet company is because the technician who set up our 4G couldn't get our older router working with the new 4G service, my parents aren't computer people and they take the technicians word as the final word so they ended up paying $100 for the DIR-815 when I told them the only reason the DIR-655+ wouldn't work with the new service is because everybody failed to mention that we had a static ip set up on our DIR-655+ and the new 4G service used a different IP address, so the router was looking for an specific IP and not automatically obtaining one.

Our DIR-655 had endpoint independent filters, QoS engine with full rules and tons of features, I had a really, really, really bad feeling with this router from the moment we got it.

Ya, I think sometimes DLink uses a standard template for ALL of the manuals and forgets to go and changes the information and captures for certain models that don't have features like other routers do.

Try to see if enabling uPnP helps. If not, you might try setting up Port Forwarding for the specific ports to the PC that needs it. Then I think uPnP needs to be turned OFF.

See that you have Advanced Fire Wall rules here as in most other routers, they don't have this so the maybe why this one model doesn't have NAT options, rather it give users more advanced features to use. You could try setting ports here and see if you can get the ports to open up.

Is this router returnable and refundable or was this something that they just gave you?

The guy said he was going to leave with our 4G not setup because he couldn't get it working with our DIR-655+, but said he had another router on hand he could try, he got it working and said it was $100 for the router as well, my dad didn't care as long as the internet worked, so my guess is it's probably non-returnable or refundable but I'll ask them my ISP either way.

Also, we forwarded ports when uPnP was disabled and it didn't work, I just recently enabled uPnP because some games weren't working altogether, I'll try the firewall rules stuff, but I honestly have no idea what I'm doing in that section, brand new to me.

So is this router at your parents working on the 4G network and your just trying to get the gaming functions going?

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

I'm 18, live with my parents, so we're talking about the same place here. :P

The DIR-815 works fine with our 4G, gaming is fine for the most part, there's things like opening ports to host games on Starcraft that you have to port forward for.

We had port forwarded on our older 655 that has been replaced by the 815, I'm considering just going back to our DIR-655 completely, we had no problems with it and I know that the reason why the technician couldn't get it going is because it was set to obtain a static ip instead of an automatic one (DHCP)

Ok, I would use the same settings as the 815s for gaining a connection to the 4G. If you think you can get the 655 going, give it a try and see how it goes. If you get it going, then follow that QoS sticky. Should help you out.

Keep us posted.

Port forwarding works fine on the DIR-655, when we used it we had set up ports for my brother to host on Starcraft as mentioned before and it worked without a hitch. My brothers are currently using the internet so later tonight or early tomorrow morning I'll try getting the DIR-655 going.
