First, thanks to JavaLawyer for starting this thread.

I've only recently received my 5020, but here's what I've noticed so far:

Piece of cake, right?  Thanks!

Would like to see the authorization model enhanced quite a bit. At minimum, support 4 levels of users (each user has 1 of these levels): Admin - just like the current admin user (can do anything). Monitor - Can view the live feed and can point the camera. View - Can view the live feed but NOT point the camera. Snapshot - can only access the CGI snapshot.

The web interface should limit itself based on the current user. It's pretty annoying to have all those links, tabs, etc visible, but when you click on them, it just asks you to re-authenticate.

Would like to be able to specify a lead-in time for video clips recorded as a result of motion/sound detection. Similar to the 942, would like to be able to specify a number of seconds (up to 5) of video BEFORE THE EVENT that gets included in the captured clip.

First, thanks to JavaLawyer for starting this thread.

I've only recently received my 5020, but here's what I've noticed so far:

  • Would like to be able to disable the IR lamps in night mode. This would make the camera useful when looking through a window at night. With the lamps on, the reflection makes the image worthless.
  • Would like to be able to configure the HTTPS port as well as the HTTP port. Maybe I'm a little OCD, but I'd rather explicitly and manually configure the port forwarding on my router, and be the one who decides what ports get used for what.
  • Would like to be able to explicitly enable HTTP/HTTPS/Both protocols (doesn't make sense to have a "neither" option).
  • Would like to be able to configure audio encoding - at least be able to cut back on bit rates to possibly reduce file sizes.
  • Would like to see in-camera patrol supported. (I realize that this is big.) I'm talking about a configurable set of preset positions that would be automatically cycled through. Ideally, you could cycle through them in a configured sequence, or randomly. For each selected position, we'd need to be able to choose how long the camera stayed at that position, and pick the mode for the camera (Day/Night/Auto). For the Night and Auto options, an additional option to enable or disable the IR lamps (see above). Obviously, motion detection would have to be temporarily disabled during PT operations (seems to be that way already for manual movements), or the motion detection algorithm would have to enhanced to differentiate between PT induced video changes and "real" movement. Finally, if motion is detected during patrol, the patrol could be paused until the motion stops and then the patrol would resume. ("Patrol pause on motion" would be a configurable option for each programmed position.)

Piece of cake, right?  Thanks!

Not sure if anyone has noticed this, however, I have asked D-Link for their ideas...
Wanted to use the timer feature for overnight.
eg. set timer to motion detect from 6pm until 8am...
This does not appear to work and should be added to the next firmware update

Motion Detection on a schedule doesn't work for you under SETUP > Motion Detection > MOTION DETECTION SETTINGS > Time?

Motion Detection on a schedule doesn't work for you under SETUP > Motion Detection > MOTION DETECTION SETTINGS > Time?

Time Schedule works ok when using times in the same day. ie 8am to 8pm
However, if you try to set the schedule from 6pm to 6am - does not appear to work.
I had trouble explaining this to D-Link support also.
I just want the cameras to detect motion overnight...

I understand now. You would need the ability to schedule two sessions during the same day for that to work (12AM-6AM, 6PM-11:59PM). Another request option could be to only enable motion detection during Night Mode, Day Mode, or Always.

Added to wishlist. . .  ;)

I don't think the entry was clear, so I modified it. The request is to allow the DCS-5020L to stay in Night Mode (black and white w/ IR filter enabled) with the on-board IR illuminators disabled so an external IR illuminator can be used instead.

Motion Detection - Option to schedule multiple motion detection events during a single day

is not available but as for AUSUSER's original request:
"Time Schedule works ok when using times in the same day. ie 8am to 8pm

Overnight schedule is working in latest firmware 1.02b5.

This improvement negates the need for multiple motion detection event windows within the same calendar day.  Will remove that item.

Hi JavaLawyer,

thx for your great work here, seems pretty interesting.
i m using the 5020L to monitor an small oil tank (over-earth tank, outside, cam is inside) last fm 1.03. (date 1-22-14)

first i m wondering why on the dlink support site the last fm is 1.02B05, 06.01.2014 and the "on-air online web login check" finds 1.03.

following points i miss or think these are, well some kind of "buggy" 'faulty'.

1) motion detection >> even set to 11% and area square set only to the oil tank cover (motion square), it detects and sends jpg s "like hell" a lot
-more and much smaller motion square s would be my wish and and
-better less sensitive motion detection like "no detection/disabling when/between sun shining into motion square"
2)motion detection schedule
-i need to make this schedule  Mo-Fr 18:00 till 08:00 (overnight) AND Sa-So 0:00 till 24:00 (so, the whole weekend, full 24h detection) atm not possible without an 24h running pc with the dLink sw.

of course, this cam is not designed for the hardcore outdoor use, but i thought it wouldnt be so much false motion detection alarms. of course sometimes the sun/solar radiation move into the detection square and cause an "motion" detection, maybe theres a way to work a bit against it.

if these points could be realized it would be really great :)

thx in advance and keep up the good work
taz

The following two posts from the FAQ board should address your first question:

DCS Network Cameras - Why Isn't The Latest Firmware Posted on D-Link USA Sites? (http://DCS Network Cameras - Why Isn't The Latest Firmware Posted on D-Link USA Sites?)
Network Cameras - Security Patch for Select Cloud Camera Models [2/25/2014] (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=58241.0)

Added the request for a finer motion detection grid.

I'm not sure how D-Link would address the sun shining. Since the motion detection is triggered based on pixel changes in the field of view, I don't see how the sun can programmatically ignored through firmware. How is the sun differentiated from a burglar shining a flashlight at the camera, a car driving by that reflects the sun into the camera, or a person walking between the path of a sun filled grid area? These are all events that I would think one would want captured...

???

Here's my wishes for future firmware:

1. Need to be a way to avoid motion detection to react when light condition change. Switching from Day light to Night vision makes motion detection react as if there was movement.

2. Night Vision turns on to early. Would be great if there were a way to set light conditions for automatic switching.

3. IR light destroys picture through window. Need option to disable IR light.

4. Option to delay motion detection after last change. Let's say I go out with the trash, I trigger sending of e-mail and recording. Problem is that this simple action delivers maybe 4 e-mails as it continue to trigger when I move around.

5. Set area of exposure measuring same way as motion detection.

The DCS-5020L already has a menu with preset positions to choose from. Unfortunately, the mydlink mobile app does not yet support this feature as it is only accessible from the DCS-5020L web UI.

1) FTP debug/transfer log for TEST button - useful to debug connection problems.
2) EMAIL debug/transfer log for TEST button - useful to debug connection problems.
3) Ability to "ping" IP address for test purposes
4) Note: Ping/FTP/MAIL debug log should show name resolution process for debug purposes.

5) Means to disable all security for pan/tilt - ie: no login required for basic video
6) Remove/replace JAVA with something else!!! JAVA is blocked for many users {corporate rules are painful}

Currently trying to debug/make these FTP & MAIL work - I click "TEST" and ... I have no means to tell why it is not working. If I had access to an network analyzer - then I could watch the transfer actually occur and see errors [I should not have to break out WireShark! Due to routing rules I cannot sniff all packets, and I don't have wireshark for WIFI!]

A log something like below would be sufficient and very helpful - There is nothing today.
Camera sets at "Testing ...."  no idea what is going on.
No means to cancel, no means to retry ... no clue what is going on. This is bad.

But - I know FTP server is working just fine I can do this from command line

Using Firmware version: 1.03

AVI files from motion detection (ftp upload) get corrupted on both of my DCS-5020L cameras after few days of working.

The RIFF AVI header is missing and its just a garbage in AVIs.

JPEGs though are still recorded properly - never had issues with those.
Rebooting camera fixes the issue (good RIFF header and play-able AVIs) but only for few days.
This is rather annoying firmware bug it seems to me :(

Please do not suggest checking my codecs or players... its not that kind of issue.

cheers,
Myr

o  Today, email notification interval is taken into account only if the email is sent : ALWAYS
It would be really beneficial to have a possibility to also specify an email interval for Sound/Motion detection

thanks

1) FTP debug/transfer log for TEST button - useful to debug connection problems.
2) EMAIL debug/transfer log for TEST button - useful to debug connection problems.
3) Ability to "ping" IP address for test purposes
4) Note: Ping/FTP/MAIL debug log should show name resolution process for debug purposes.

Added to the firmware wishlist...

5) Means to disable all security for pan/tilt - ie: no login required for basic video
6) Remove/replace JAVA with something else!!! JAVA is blocked for many users {corporate rules are painful}

I don't understand #5.  I highly doubt #6 will ever happen since D-Link's entire camera product line leverages the same/similar Java code.

Please do not suggest checking my codecs or players... its not that kind of issue.

cheers,
Myr

What is the firmware wishlist request?

This wishlist contains firmware suggestions provided by the forum community and may not reflect actual changes to current or future D-Link firmware releases. Below is a summary of everyone's input thus far. Please let me know if I over generalized, misrepresented, or missed anyone's concerns and I'll refresh the list with updates. Recent items are highlighted in blue.

If any items in the wishlist were fixed by the latest firmware, please post and I'll update!

What is the firmware wishlist request?

Sorry that it wasn't clear. The wishlist requests are:

1) Fix the corrupt AVI issue. So it doesn't record garbage after few days of working fine. Have to soft-reboot my both cameras for that pretty much once of twice a week.

2) If #1 is hard to fix - please include "scheduled reboot" feature.
So I could set it up to reboot cameras, say, daily at midnight and that will hopefully fix the corrupt AVI issue

Much appreciated!

Myr

How about Open Network Video Interface Forum (ONVIF) and Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) support? Then I can manage ALL of my cameras from a single user interface.

Thanks for listening...

Are other users experiencing this issue? i.e. camera saves corrupt AVI files after a few days of continuous operation?

"Reboot on a schedule" is already on the  firmware wishlist...

Hi,

I recently bought this camera and had some problems with it.
I noticed that one problem is already on the wish list: the option to exclude the day/night transition from motion/sound detection.

I like to put two more items on the list:

1) Option to exclude overall brightness changes from motion detection. I find I get false positives when the light changes outside, say when the sun comes out, even if no direct sunlight is visible.

2) This might be covered by the request for a scheduled reboot option, but it seems that the camera can't re-establish wifi connection after a power failure.
My AcuRite pressure, temperature and humidity sensor does reconnect, perhaps it has a built in delay after power failure to let the router and cable modem get back up first?

Thanks

The reboot request is already listed. I doubt the brightness change can be accommodated. Motion detection operates by detecting pixel differences between adjacent frame captures. A person walking across a light source (e.g. window or lamp) within the field of view will invariably alter the pixel brightness and is a valid motion detection event. A person outside of the field of view that turns on/off a light can also be considered a valid event (e.g. burglar?). I would think that the algorithm needed to distinguish between general changes to ambient brightness versus an object moving in the field of view may add to much overhead to work in real-time.  :-\

I'll add the request nonetheless...  :-\

Thanks for putting the request on the list. A quick google search shows that researchers have been considering the issue of false positives in motion detection for quite a while, so perhaps something can be done even within the constraints of the camera's cpu.

I have another, much smaller, request. I noticed that it is not possible to indicate a time period that passes midnight when scheduling motion/sound detection e.g. a period with starting time 20:00 and ending time 05:00 is deemed invalid.

Thanks

I hope to see reboot schedule included because I saw the camera will freeze or hang or disconnected.

When this IR lamps are switching ON/OFF there is a little noise.

The issue is that little noise is recognized as a "Sound detection".
Before the IR lamps change its state, "Sound detection" should be disabled for a few seconds.

Moreover changing IR lamps state make the image change so much, that it recognized as a "Motion detection".
Before the IR lamps change its state, "Motion detection" should be disabled for a few seconds.

When the weather is cloudy I can have 20 "false" detection mails a day

How come, there is no function to allow Override function, if i record clips to ftp servers ?

maybean option to set it to allow 10 GB and then overwrite data ?

Security: Would be really helpful for an ability to install a custom root and SSL certificate.

also, if optionally there is a CLI option available for such actions, it would be really useful :)

Extender mode needs the SSID name broadcast so wireless clients can connect to it when using this mode.  ::)

BTW tha't is inaccurate information. WRONG. Can type that information in manually. I have yet to see any device or software which does not permit the SSID to be typed in manually. This includes DLINK cams,

I presume D-Link chooses to not hide SSIDs as in most cases, hiding SSIDs can be found anyways. Not a feature probably really need on cameras.

Disagree. Can be found but some customers want to make it more difficult for their own reasons.

Something D-Link will have to review and consider. Good Luck.
