Title: System Log?
Post by: Carnaged on November 30, 2014, 06:11:39 AM
Hi all,

Just got this router this week and loving the stability coming from other AC routers that don't work very well on the 5Ghz channel. However is it possible to see my router uptime and UPNP forwarded ports for example. I know that I can send logs to a Syslog server but can I not just see the router log. I am coming from D-link routers with the older UI where all this sort of information was standard? I like the new interface but it is very basic compared.

About the only log type thing I can see is the Internet Uptime.

Thanks

Carnage

Connection uptime is found on the Home/Internet page of the UI. I don't think uPnP Forwarding Ports are displayed anymore. They maybe in the Syslog.

Link>Welcome! (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48135.0)

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=47512.0) version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Connection uptime is found on the Home/Internet page of the UI. I don't think uPnP Forwarding Ports are displayed anymore. They maybe in the Syslog.

Hi and thanks for the reply;

Hardware Version - HW:A1
Location - UK
Current Firmware Version:   1.01, Thu 12 Jun 2014

Hi, I am trying to see the Router uptime not my Internet connection uptime, is this available anywhere?

As for logs, every router I have ever owned has had a log that you can see on the router to see if you are having issues and generally what is going on with the router, how do you do that on this router, do you have to email the log to yourself as I don't have a syslog server.

Thanks again

Also,

I am having issues with my apple devices on this router, however this is not the first router than I have had apple issues with, since the move up to IOS 8.1.

This morning on my Apple iPhone 5s I have a full signal on 5Ghz, however the internet is not responsive, the only way to get it to come back is to turn the wifi off and on. Then it comes back for a little while. However today I reset the network settings on the device to get the internet back.

Not sure when and if Apple will sort these issues out, not sure if there is anything I can do other than use 2.4Ghz on apple devices for the time being as this issue doesn't seem apparent on that band.

I also have noticed some issues with Apple performances on my iPhone and MBP. I believe it maybe Apples issue here. I'll put my router back online sometime this week and do more testing since I upgraded my iphone to 8.1.1 last nite.

Sounds good, I have emailed Dlink but I do think this is a Apple issue, I have had problems with a Netgear R7000 Asus AC87U and now this. I would look in the log if there was one available.

You might want to review the Apple forums to see if there has been others there and any information regarding 8.1 or 8.1.1 as well.

I'll ask my contact at D-Link to see if they have seen any issues. I'll load up my Syslog server and put the 880L on it and see what I get.

There are plenty of threads with similar issues to what I have described having looked on the apple support forums. One tip was to put a static DNS setting at router level which I have done so will see what affect that has. Not holding out much hope but we shall see.

Ok, thats one think I think I normally do if i'm not testing default settings. I input static DNS and disable DNS Relay. Is DNS Relay disabled on your router? Try that as well.

Interesting.. I just posted a new thread and walk into this one.

So there's general issues with Apple devices on the 5 GHz channel?? My iPhone 5 seems to be fine (on iOS8), so I'm guessing is the newer devices that has AC connectivity?? My iPad Air 2 doesn't play nice with the 5 GHz channel. It causes the router to reboot.

Here is the reply I received from D-Link;

It would appear that the issue is with your Apple device rather than the D-Link device, as you state that the issue also occurs with the ASUS router.

There is an Apple Support community thread that talks about iOS 8 and 5GHz WiFi issues - two quick suggestions made there are to forget the network and rejoin, and toggle the phone WiFi on/off.

There are no known issues with Apple devices and the DIR-880L. and you are already running the latest firmware for that router.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Ya, what I figured they would respond with. if there was a problem on the D-Link side, I'd probably hear about it.

Yeah.. I searched and digged thru google - iPad/iPhone with DIR-880L don't return any specific result.

Can we claim first?? =P

At least we know we are solving first world problems.. by ourselves.. for now.

That aside, this baby is blazing fast!! Even on the 2 GHz channel!! And the black friday on this deal was well worth the investment/upgrade.

If other Mfr routers are seeing this then I presume this is a global thing with Apple and Apple will be addressing it thru there channels.

Wish Apple would come out and sort this out, 5Ghz just grinds to a halt on my iPad 3, then starts talking about the server not responding and I cannot connect to the router gui even with a full Wifi signal.

I would use 2.4Ghz on here but I watch a lot of twitch streams on the d vice and 2.4Ghz never seems to cut it

Have you contacted Apple or posted anything on there forums?

I guess will just have to be patient for Apples fix. Only thing you could try is to maybe find a different 5Ghz AP to connect, something older and see if that works. Like a used Apply Airport Extreme and run it in AP mode and see if the iPad works better. Then again, it may not.

I have posted on the Apple support forums but I never get an answer there are so many posts all the time.

My latest issue is that on my iPad the same websites won't load or are really slow, whereas my PC loads the pages without issue, I have reset the router to factory settings, reset the ipad, changed my DNS server and deleted my safari history and shared information.

Strange but true

Lets try a test.

Set the following on the 5Ghz radio:
Single mode AC and WPA2/AES only, then disable WPA2 all together
Single mode N and WPA2/AES only, then disable WPA2 all together
I can't remember if single A is supported...Single mode A with WPA only and Mixed Mode security, then disable WPA all together

Re-able WiFi security after testing.

Do any of these modes work?

I gave this a try and the same problems persisted, can't figure out what to do.

Trying to watch twitch streams at the moment and they load but then it will come up with problem detected and say that the streamer is offline when they aren't

Wondering if I should drop back to the older firmware?.

So with Security disabled on the 5Ghz you still saw wireless problems?

You could try shipping FW and see. Do a factory reset, load the FW file, factory reset once more then set up from scratch and try default settings on the WiFi and OPEN security and see...

Hi,

Yes I disabled wifi security and my problem did not improve, I have also rolled back to the previous firmware and that also made no difference.

I'm thinking it's something with the iPad and IOS version...only thing I can think of would be to go back one version and see.

I read that iOS 8.1.2 is out...  ::)
Title: Re: System Log?
Post by: Carnaged on December 10, 2014, 01:15:33 PM
Hi again,

IOS 8.1.2 only fixes a ringtone issue  >:( although I have updated an iPad to check and its still no better.

Today I brought home my work Thinkpad which has 2.4ghz, connected at around 75Mbps and that also timesout on webpages, Twitch was fine on there unlike the iPads but still I can't get my wired PC to timeout on websites at all. I have the 2.4Ghz set to 20Mhz Channel 1 on Mixed g/n.

I was having issues with my PS4 and Xbox One but they were both getting DDossed pretty hard over the weekend.

So all iPads are not working well with G mode test huh?

Try switching to 5Ghz and single mode N, WPA2/AES only and test again. try channel 48 and 149.

PS4 and XB1 are working ok? Wireless? Which radio were they using?

Only think I might suggest is to get another 880L if you have a local store that has a good refund policy and see if the same thing happens. I presume it may and would be up to you to test if you feel like it.

Hi,

Not sure if this is a UK region issue but on my 5Ghz settings the only channels I get are 36,40,44,48 I can't find anything that states how many should be available.

Basically at the moment I am on 5GHz N only WPA/WPA2 Personal Channel 48, I have also tried 44 and it is the same. Its strange how both bands are affected though, these page timeouts happen on the iPad 2 which is connected via 2.4Ghz, the rest are on the 5Ghz band.

Both Xbox One and PS4 are wired into a switch and then into the router, I am thinking that I may have to test another 880L as at the moment I do not have anything else available to test.

Post by: FurryNutz on December 10, 2014, 01:36:28 PM
Ok. I forgot your in the UK so your router will be missing the extra 5Ghz channels.

Well, for now, I guess see if Apple comes out with 8.2. It's been seeded to devs. I presume it would be next year before we see that.

If you can test with another router at some point.

Hi,

Am I right in thinking that nothing changed regarding the Wifi in 1.02 firmware, in the release notes it just mentions IP reservation, however when I am running this firmware my 5Ghz wifi seems worse, I get buffering that does not happen on 1.01. I make sure that I factory reset before and after and I am inputting the same settings but this seems repeatable for me so i'm not sure whats happening?

As far as I can tell, they upgraded the 5Ghz output for the NA region FW. I don't know if the same applies to the EU or WW region FWs.

Thanks for the info, I double checked and it did change the Wifi after looking on the release notes, I was having trouble in some games that I was trying to play on a wired connection and also like I say the Wifi was buffering out of no where. Anyway I have gone back one and all good again now.

I just got off the line with DLINK support and they informed me that there is no way to see the logs within the web interface. Also I send the logs to a syslog server now but there is very little there compared to older models. It only basically informs of DHCP leases, time syncs, etc. Not much use.

IS there an official avenue to request feature sets within firmware?

ps.. did this thread get hijacked for Apple discussion :)

There are many things missing in this new UI compared to the old UI like the built in log setting and display, without the use of syslog.  Will these be restored in the next firmware.  I hope that the DHCP IP reserve list (even offline IP address) would also be restored.  Thanks

We don't know if any features will be added or not in the next FW release. D-Link is aware of the Reserved IP address for off-line device problem and we hope it will be addressed in the next FW release. For any requested features, I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. It helps to let them know about features you desire to have. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

Let me rephrase on log view and setting.  Since most of your routers have these and for DIR-880L, this feature was removed.  Sorry for being ignoramus but how can I view the syslog if I directed it on my NAS DNS-320L?  Will the viewer feature of NAS display it?  No other setting to view those like in the old routers?
Title: Re: System Log?
Post by: FurryNutz on March 26, 2015, 06:53:07 AM
I don't have any experience with that model DNS. I presume if that model DNS has syslog capturing features then it could capture syslogs from routers. For those routers that supported syslogging, you would enable the feature and point it to the IP address of your DNS. You'll need to refer to the user manual or the DNS-320L forum for further help and information.

Most logging is application based and installed on a PC. The application will capture and display the contents of the log data.

Thanks for the response on syslog's application activity tracking.  But older routes have monitoring on router's connectivity tracking like LAN terminal's log info, DOS attacks, wireless and other services change of status, non volatile memory update and others.  Is this log function available in DIR-880L?

It appears to be supported on the 880L:

I've already checked it out but sending ACK to IP address, server request from MAC address, etc. are too cyrptic. Wireless service up nor change in configuration seems not posted.  Anyway, syslog can be only be viewed using NAS log viewer but old router keeps the copy to itself which can be viewed by itself.  Something that I'm looking for instead of dumping these data to other device and don't know how to view without going outside the router's WebUI.

There maybe other PC software based apps that can view syslogs. You should contact D-Link and ask them what they recommend using to collect and view syslogs.

Good Luck.

Thanks anyway.   Hope that D-Link could review the revamped configuration UI of 880L from the content of older UI.  Another thing I missed is the wireless status screen that indicates the speed and signal strength of connecting devices which is not present in 880L's UI.  Here you know which one you need to relocate the device for stronger signal and better speed.

Most of the time you can use InSSIDer app to help with connection rates and check status.

They removed the wireless status with the DGL-5500 and this new UI. I don't know if they will be bring it back since users can use other wifi status apps. We did ask about bring it back. Nothing was said about it. Ya It was nice to have on the older routers.

in SSider will only work on smartphones, PCs and tablets.  But IP cameras, LED TV and other IP appliances can't know how strong and speedrate of their connection so it is better to place it in the access points/wifi router.  Actually my colleagues in Singapore and Guam were surprised when I bought for them 880L units and saw the new UI with limited settings and functionalities, compared from older routers.  Asus and Netgear have been adding sophisticated tools and settings in their new AC routers so I hope that D-Link at least restore the previous configuration and monitoring screens.
