[Solved] QoS Woes ...

Greetings, Got the A1 version of this router primarily for its features and QoS. The router setup went fine and had it working without any issues. But don't feel any quality differences after enabling QoS, Esp while watching YouTube on my Sony Internet TV and on mobile devices. Do I need to configure something more? The router is setup in bridged mode, with the following QoS settings:



I have also updated to the latest Rev A Patch v1.10 B04! Any help guys?

What quality difference were you expecting? QoS doesn't speed up your connection, it just manages it so when under heavy load, certain things slow down less then others. What issue are you seeing that your using QoS to try to fix? Stuttering? Resolution?

  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have? Link> Speed Testing Sites

Thank you, for responding. Yes, I'm aware that QoS doesn't increase the overall connection. Infact I'm trying to achieve the exact opposite ~ decrease the speed! What I'm trying to do, Is to limit the bandwidth being used for YouTube regardless of where it's being accessed on. Is there a different way of configuring QoS to implement this? Maybe I'm doing it all wrong.

If the router is in bridge mode then QoS will not be used or needed. If the router is in bridge mode, QoS and other features should not be displayed in the menu.

Yes, the router is in bridged mode to a 4G LTE router from Huawei. Well, QoS is displayed and is working ~ partially. Like if I try to view YouTube on my laptop, the resolution stays at 360p, which is exactly what I want. BUT, If I try to see the same video on my Sony TV or Mobile Phones (via the YouTube App), the resolution stays at 1080p, no difference.

You sure you have the router wirelessly bridged to the ISP modem/router?  ???

FYI:
  • If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. Call the ISP and ask to see if the ISP modem can be bridged. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Also check the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address of 192.168.0.1. Check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem, and if modem can't be bridged, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.

You sure you have the router wirelessly bridged to the ISP modem/router?  ???

Ok, this is how I have this setup. My ISP's device is a Huawei E5172 4G LTE Router, apart from providing basic functions; It doesn't offer much in configurations. Which is why I got the 860L. I reserved an IP address on the 4G Router and then on the 860L, disabled DHCP server and set the reserved IP address in Router Settings. Connected the ISP's router to the 860L's lan port 1 via a CAT-6 cable and the 860L starts to function, like any good router should. Connected all my home devices, Enabled QoS and configured the IP addresses that should receive low bandwidth while accessing YouTube. Which again, works. But only on laptops and not any other devices.

So how is QoS working on the laptops then? The link you sent, doesn't mention disabling QoS or anything related to QoS in wired AP mode.

You were absolutely right, there was no QoS functioning in bridge mode! Tho it would have been good, if this was mentioned somewhere in the official manual. But I did get it to work. This is what I did, I reset the router and connected the Cat5e cable from my 4G Router (LAN Out) to the 860L's Internet Port In (Yes, the yellow one) and I let D-link's software to automatically configure. Guess what? The small globe icon turned from Yellow to Green ~ I had Internet! Then I changed the default (D-link's) IP address, Configured the DHCP and Reserved the IP addresses of the devices I wanted QoS to function on. After which I enabled QoS, Configured the settings and Viola! It works perfectly! Can you tell me, what actually happened here?

So your in a double NAT condition while your 860L is in router mode is all. Single NAT condition is preferred with the 860L however you can alleviate some of this by putting the 860Ls WAN IP address it got from the ISP modem in to the modems DMZ.
