DIR 605 L WAN Port Query
« on: February 14, 2013, 10:14:16 AM »

Hi All

I bought a new DIR 605L as my Cisco WRT is unstable in wifi connection, so i unpacked the new DIr605L and connected the same cable of my ISP to its WAN port , but i was sad to find out that there is no WAN light and its setup says , Cable disconnected, i noticed my ISP ethernet cable has all 8 wires whereas the WAN port of DIR 605 L has only 4 wires in it. I plugged the cable back into my Cisco Router and it works without any hassles as cisco router WAN port has 8 wires interface.

Next i tried plugging a LAN cable supplied along with DIR605L into a LAN port of Cisco Router and then into the WAN port of DIR-605L , immediately i see Yellow light pop up, so my question is
1. Is My WAN Port BAD ?? As i have asked for a  replacement

or

2. 8 Wires Ethernet Cables are not Supported by 4 Wires WAN port of DIR605L ??

After getting a new router as replacement i doubt even if that will work or not , kindly clarify as i cannot get this information anywhere.

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended. Sometimes the in box LAN cable are not mfg'd well, try a new one.

Do you get to the 605's web page at 192.168.0.1?

Yes i get the 605 Webpage and the same ethernet cable from my ISP works well in the WAN port of

Ok, I presume there could be a cable configuration compatibility issue here. I would take the 605 to a different location, say a friend, family or someone else who might have a ISP modem in use for Internet and see if it works there. Even if there might be a computer pair shop that can test it out. It's possible that the WAN port might be dead however if you connected the WAN port on the 605 to the LAN port of the Cisco, I presume it's working at this point. You might ask the ISP if there is a wire configuration issue or information regarding this.

Let us know how it goes.

But whats the answer for the same cable working with Cisco WRT120N , don't they all routers follow the same cable configuration.???

Also doing this exercise will not help me in my premises as this router will still be useless for me.

I can go to the server room but they will argue about why the other router is working fine and this one not and i dont think they will co-operate on doing my cable configurations differently.

Please suggest

I would ask someone from the server room if they can help you verify that the router is not worknig on there system if someone can come to your place and review it.

Only other thing I can recommend is to try the router at a different location with a different modem and cable or go back to the place of purchase and exchange the 605 for another one and see if the next one does the same thing.

Thanks

I have already ordered the replacement , it will be here in 2 days time , i asked the technician from server room he was not ready to help as the cisco router is working , he says your router is faulty why should i test it when cisco is already working on the same ethernet cable, the only difference i saw in both the router ports is that 605 has a 4 wire port and 120N has a 8 wire port though i know both are not gigabit WAN ports and that most of the time only 4 wires are used , but still i wanted to confirm that if i get the replacement and it also does the same thing of no light on WAN port , i dont have any answer.

Is this ISP handing out a DHCP, PPPoE or static IP WAN address?
Have you attempted to manually configure the 605 router using the routers web page?

Yes PPPOE, with DNS configured manually, i have even tried the DHCP way but the router is as good as its WAN Port input when the port itself doesn;t recognize the cable connected what further can i do in the webpage , i reset it as well, but i guess the port continues to be a ***** , i was already killed by the disconnection problem of WRt120N and the last thing i expected was this , hopefully the new replacement router WAN port lights up with cable connected or else i do not know what to do

I seem to have the same problem.   My Cisco E1200 router "works", but is slow, especially in upload, so I purchased a DIR-605L.  When the WAN port is plugged directly into the ISP's WAN ethernet port (I have wired ethernet to the home, from Beam Fiber in Hyderabad), the DIR 605L WAN light does not light, and it can't talk to the DHCP server to get an IP address.   But when plugged into the LAN port of the Cisco E1200, the WAN lights up and it can get a LAN IP address.  I've tried various cables, and none of them work when the DIR-605L is connected to the ISP's ethernet port.

Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Power OFF the ISP modem or service then back ON then do the same for the 605L router.
