868L DHCP Setup
« on: August 30, 2013, 12:27:05 PM »

ISP is Cox.net.  Router setup Step 1: Configure Internet Connection. The router chose DHCP (default). I clicked NEXT and it asked me for Host Name (default value shows "dlink") plus Primary/Secondary DNS addresses.  If Cox provides automatic IP addresses, what am I supposed to enter as DNS address?  THX!

    Link>
Welcome!
  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates?
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?

If your using the Setup Wizard it should automatically get DNS values unless your ISP modem as a built in router possibly.

You can conconfigure the 868L manually as well under Setup/Internet/Manual

You can also do this for any DNS configurations:

This is a brand new router that I got yesterday.  I started the initial configuration but couldn't connect wirelessly.  So, I went back to my old router until I get this thing figured out.  DIR868L - H/W: A1, F/W: 1.01  Orange County (although I'm soon moving to Palm Springs area).  Started with laptop wired to router to modem.  Didn't reset it as it was new out-of-the-box.  Downloaded firmware updates this A.M: initial 1.00, v1.01, and v1.02

ISP modem:  Cisco DPQ3212.  Wired connection shows 1Gbps.  Separate router - Cisco Linksys E900 (11n router).  I upgraded that 3 weeks ago because it provided greater connectivity.  But, it's not strong enough to provide HD quality video.  So I chose your 868L and can't wait to get up and running with it.

I'm not the best at understanding network configuration...just a bit better than most.

What FW is currently loaded now? v1.02?
Was a factory reset performed after loading v1.02?

    I would do this,
3rd Party Security Software Configurations
  • Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.

  • Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Then turn OFF the ISP modem. Directly LAN wire to the back of the 868L an connect to the routers web page. Log in and go to Tools/System and select the Restore Factory settings and let the router reset.

While this happens, Turn ON the ISP modem and let it come to ready. After it comes to ready, Log back into the 868L and follow the set up wizard that appears.

The first step is to attempt to establish a complete internet connection with out having to configure anything. If the ISP modem is online and all is connected well, the 868L should find and set up automatically the connection. Select next and it should prompt you for Wireless SSID name and PW information. You can change the SSID name to anything you like. Keep setting up the router wizard an at the end it should reboot once more.

For doing any FW updates, Please follow this:

Connectivity is better.  Laptop 1 reports 300Mbps (was 70 - 90 Mbps) @5GHz & Laptop 2 reports 162Mbps (40 - 80Mbps).  But still getting significant stops & starts in viewing youtube videos @720p & 1080p.  Had more consistent playback in the past with a Belkin 802.11n router at those levels.

Not sure what benefit there is to using both 2.4 & 5 GHz bands.  Only 2 laptops are connected. Will be updating those 2 to AC level as well by year-end.

I recommend that you run thru the following Router and Wireless configuration on this link and see if it will help any:
Router Troubleshooting Suggestions and Tips

I haven't seen any issues while streaming on 2.4 or 5Ghz.
Also test with HT20/40Mhz Coexistence ON and OFF. I've seen some odd behavior with this enabled. I think mines OFF now.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.
