I downloaded v1.04 B01 via support page at dlink.com, even the filename says it is B01, but after installing it, the version shows at router's admin page is 1.04WW, are they the same firmware?

Also I noticed that the home page doesn't has 'usb' device icon even I plugin a usb stick to shareport. I remember 1.02 version I have usb device icon, not sure if this is normal for 1.04.
the firmware I downloaded was from http://support.dlink.ca/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DIR-880L

After updating my DIR-880L FW A1 SEAsia version from 1.03FB to 1.04WW, all my wireless connected clients don't show WiFi icon.  Is this a bug?  See below:  Didn't experience it in previous versions.

Do you mean the icon where the PC screen is seen?  ???

Yes from scratch and yes the PC icon, instead of WiFi icon.

This maybe something they may have changed. You would need to contact your regional D-Link support office and ask them about it.
I see your region has information regarding the same security patch at listed here in the NA region:
http://www.dlink.com.sg/d-link-router-hnap-privilege-escalation-command-injection/ (http://www.dlink.com.sg/d-link-router-hnap-privilege-escalation-command-injection/)

However I can't find your region patch file for the 880L. I see there is a 868L listed. Nothing for the 880L. You might want to ask your region if using the file we have posted here is supported or if they will be posting a different one for your region. Just want to make sure your using the correct FW file for your region is all.

OK thanks!!! Does 880L also support triband wireless like 890l? Smart connect also? Here is the mobile screen for its wireless setting. This happened after upgrading to 1.04ww

I believe they were suppose to support SC on the 880L like the 890L does...I don't know. I'll ask and see if I can find out anything. If you make contact with your regional office, let us know what they say.
I see it was slated for support this month here in the NA region:

Tried to enable it but it exposes my hidden SSID :( Try later to contact but previously, got little disappointed when I called them. They simply asked me to downgrade the version according to my region.

Ya when using SC, it's default settings are limited as it's designed to auto detect and negotiate the connections for each radio. I presume that D-Link probably doesn't support hidden SSIDs while using SC. I've asked my contact here about it and will post back if I get information about it. Hiding SSIDs can be feasible and usable on some configurations, however there are some scanners that can detect hidden SSID names so it's not completely flawless in it's design.

Test SC out and if it works for you, please give some feed back here on your experiences.

AU
DIR-880L
FW:1.04WW
(Factory reset, upgrade, power off at mains for 30+ seconds, factory reset, new config)

Found another bug in FW:1.04WW all my iPv4 rules no longer work, this bug may have been there in 1.03WW as well but I hadn't checked to see that they were being enforced.

I have returned to 1.02, rules work fine using that FW, will contact dlink support Monday

IPv4 rules?  ???Please explain...

Under the firewall section IPv4 rules, there is an option to set rules you give the rule a name (no spaces in name allowed in 1.03 and above), set the LAN ip range that you want to control access of and the WAN ip or range you want to allow or deny access to. Set the port range then select the schedule, the default schedule is Always Enable unless you have set up others in the Time & Schedule section. In FW1.02 all Time Schedules have to follow 1,2,3,4...etc naming, in 1.03 and above you  can use real names like school, holidays etc. In FW 1.02 you can only have 2 on/off times per day, in FW 1.03 and above you can have up to 12 on/off per day (on for an hour off for an hour repeated). In FW 1.02 when I setup said rule to allow access twice a day for a certain range of ips it functions correctly by allowing access then denying it when it should. Example, I have this setup so when the kids friends come over all they need is the password, they have the same access as the kids. So for sleep overs etc they won't have access when they are meant to be sleeping the router does this automatically without me having to do a thing. In FW 1.03 and above I have to go into the router and use Parental Controls once that child has connected and assign the schedule I want them to have access by, the firewall rules no longer have any effect.

So there have been improvements in the creating of schedules but these schedules (except Always Allow) no longer work with the IPv4 (firewall) rules but they do work for individual nodes via Parental Controls

You might want to ask you regional D-Link support office if this is newly expected behavior or not. We should find out if this is going forward in improvements or not. I'll ask and see if this is the same here in the NA region.

OK worked this one out myself, simple fix, don't know why I didn't try it earlier, recreate all your firewall rules in reverse, so instead of LAN address 1st do WAN then put the LAN address in the 2nd box instead of the 1st. I would say the code for this function must of been "tweaked" maybe it was incorrect in the earlier fw's but it looks like it is working as it should now...:P

Glad you figured it out.

Can you post a screen capture of what your rules look like for future users?

Thank you for the information.  ;)

I will throw something together when I get a chance... ;)

lol...had some spare time now...

Fairly self explanatory..In this example of an IPv4 rule it is disabling internet access to the LAN ips listed (including WiFi) all other LAN ips still have access to the internet. The blocked ips will have internet access as defined by the schedule "School"

This is the schedule that is applied to that rule, the white areas are the times access is allowed

I have a new 880L on order. I don't know what firmware version it will contain so in case I need to update it I was looking at the available updates. I am a little confused about the designations for firmware updates.

1. There appears to be two types of firmware updates: security "patches" and "regular updates".  Is the "patch" not a full firmware update but just an overlay of part of the existing firmware? In this case if you have old firmware, you would have to update the full firmware with the regular update first and then update that with the "patch"?

2. A "WW" area patch applies to everyone but the "full" update is specific to a particular area (in my case it would be North America)?

3. This site has referenced a v1.03 security patch. This appears to have been superseded by v1.04 which came out a few days later?

Thanks,

  JohnD

WW is for World Wide and can be applicable to the NA region if D-Link didn't post a specific FW file for the NA region. WW is safe to use.

Yes, please use the most recent version of FW.

Thanks FurryNutz,

I have used D-Link Routers for many years. I have had my current DIR-655 for about 7 years. I had an old DI-604 for I can't remember how long. They never gave me a bit of trouble. I hope the DIR-880L will follow in the footsteps of these two.

I hope you will enjoy it as mush as I do. Just be aware that the UI is different from the 655 and some of the additional advanced features you see on the 655 will not be on the 880L.  ::)

Let us know how it goes when you get it.  ;)

I have been reading a lot of the complaints people have had regarding the new UI and was a little leery of going to it as it seemed to have eliminated some nice features. But I have very few special settings in my current router. In comparing what I have to what the new UI will give you, I think I will be ok. Maybe in future firmware updates some of the previous functions will be restored.

Just confirming,

Aus firmware is 1.01b90 which is WAY out of date.

Providing I can un-brick my 880L (suggestions welcomed, it's deader than a flat cat on a road), I can flash to 1.04b01 WW ?

I recommend getting v1.03 for your region from this site:
http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/downloads2008.asp (http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/downloads2008.asp)

Try this process to recover the router using v1.00, this apply the v1.03:
Emergency Recovery Mode (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=44909.0)

Always follow this for doing any router FW updates please:

Thanks. Unbricked and had already done 1.04.

Unfortunately my old DIR-655 significantly outperforms the DIR-880L, on a 100Mbp internet connection (a 20% loss in internet throughput using the DIR-880) (others have reported this feature too, as discovered after a bit of googling) :-
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2265803#r7

Went back to using my trust old DIR-655 instead. :(

I find the 880L out performes my 3 versions of the 655 I have here. Has way better WiFi.

Maybe there is a configuration that should be looked at on the 880L.

Thank you and OK.

Could be config, but it was pretty stock standard and you can't change a great deal with the comparatively dumbed-down new user interface.

When we say "out performs" :)  what specifically do you mean ?

As mentioned previously my old 655 reliably delivers 100Mbps from the WAN source each time every time, whereas testing the 880L repeatably delivers circa 85Mbps from exactly the same WAN source ... from that perspective the 655 repeatably out-performs the 880L using real-world internet traffic :D

Don't want to buy an argument, just want to understand what is being said which is different to my testing experience.
Other people had reported the same WAN throughput experience (I think I provided links some time ago).
Maybe if you could replicate the testing
(cable 100Mbps source, cable modem/router, back end 655 or 880L WAN port connected to the same router's port, then multiple speed tested)
to compare results, that'd be fantastic.

PS also thanks for your previous double-NAT info http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm  (NAT'd router behind an existing NATing router) - in my case I do NEED a double-NAT to segregate networks and further protect the "inner" network ... double-NAT is not a bad thing if you know what you want and either do not care about UPnP and/or can well configure your routers yourself as well as know in which network to place individual devices.

PPS like you (I think) I bought the 880L for what I perceived to be "better WiFi" however I could not live with the internet (WAN) throughput degradation as compared to the 655 (I am paying $$ for a 100Mbps plan, after all), and so the 880L is currently a door-stop gathering dust on the floor of my study.
