Title: Comcast Cable Modem setup with DIR-655?
Post by: FriendOfJah on November 01, 2009, 08:06:00 AM
Hi Folks,

I recently upgraded from a LinkSys WRT54G router to the D-Link DIR-655 for the gigabit and 802.11n capacity. The older LinkSys router had been setup by the Comcast tech at my house when I moved from AT&T DSL to Comcast Cable with telephony (Arris TM502G Cable Modem). I printed out all of the settings from the old LinkSys router just in case. I tried at first to let the system set itself up as indicated in the Quick Start CD-ROM and the manual, but I had no Internet connection. I had to use the Primary DNS and Secondary DNS server information again. I also had to use the MAC Address that was in my old router which is not the hardware IP address of my PC nor does it match any of the MAC addresses printed on the bottom of the DSL modem. Everything does work fine, but it seems quite slow compared to the LinkSys and I feel it's just not setup right based on what I've read at the Comcast site. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong here? Do I really need to use these DNS servers and MAC address or can't this be automatically setup by the router? Of note I do have an ADT security system that uses the telephony to access ADT. Thnaks in advance for any and all help provided.

Roger

I have Comcast and the router is set on defaults except for Wireless which I setup (SSID, security, etc.).
A new router will have a different MAC then your old one which is why you had to input the MAC but it was unnecessary.

What you need to do whenever you connect a new router is powercycle your modem after connecting the router (unplug power adapter from modem then plug back in). Comcast only allows one MAC address per modem unless you pay for multiple IP's. Your modem would have had the old MAC from the Linksys until you powercycle.

Hi KevTech,

Thanks for the reply. Someone at the Comcast forums said a similar thing. He recommended that I do the following.

1. Turn off all computers tied to router
2. Reset D-Link DIR-655 router by pressing reset button for 10+ seconds
3. Unplug the router
4. Press the reset button on the back of the Cable modem. Let is stabilize.
5. Plugin the router. Let is stabilize.
6. Turn on a computer connected to the router and check the Internet connection.

Someone at work who has the same setup said I should remove the backup battery from the Cable modem for a few minutes too. Will these steps work and then I wont need to input anything manually for the Comcast internet portion of the setup (DNS or MAC)? Please let me know, thanks.

Yes those steps are correct , I have a similar modem that has a battery in it too.  I unplugged both the cable modem and router and took out battery.  Put battery back in modem and plugged it in.  Let the modem run through it's complete start up then powered on the router.  I don't have to use any manual entries for the router to connect to the modem.

I got up early this morning and did all of the steps and everything works fine. Thanks so much for your help. However the internet still seems much slower than my old LinkSys router. My iPhone Speed Test App for WiFi went from around 14,000 kps to only 5,000 kps download speed. The upload speed is still around 5,000 kps though. Why is this router so much slower? Even while using the LAN it seems noticeably slower. Where can I go to learn how to optimize the settings for performance on this router?  ???
