Outside Office Need Wireless
« on: October 09, 2007, 08:33:42 AM »

I have a DIR-655 in my house with a High Gain attenna on one of the 3 spots. I need to get access to my router wirelessly from my office outside. My office is a metal building about 200ft away from the window to the office my router is located. Do they sell anything that I can mount on the outside of my office and run an ethernet cable to my computer to gain access. If I am outside of my office I can access my router but inside the building I can not. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

You probably need to use the WDS mode. The Wireless Distribution System allows access points to communicate with one another wirelessly in a standardized way. It can also simplify the network infrastructure by reducing the amount of cabling required. Basically the access points will act as a client and an access point at the same time.

If you are trying to mount the equipments in the outdoor environment, the D-Link AirPremier 802.11g Outdoor AP/Bridge DWL-2700AP is capable of delivering transfer rates of up to 54Mbps in any outdoor environment. For advanced installations, this AP/Bridge has an integrated 802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE) port that allows you to install the device in areas where power outlets are not readily available.

802.11g (Full Power with 5dBi gain diversity dipole antenna)

Indoor:• 98ft (30m) @ 54Mbps
• 112ft (34m) @ 48Mbps
• 184ft (56m) @ 18Mbps
• 217ft (66m) @ 12Mbps
• 259ft (79m) @ 9Mbps
• 325ft (99m) @ 6Mbps
Outdoor:• 367ft (112m) @ 54Mbps
• 820ft (250m) @ 18Mbps
• 1,640ft (500m) @ 6Mbps

If you want the indoor equipment, the D-Link AirPremierTM DWL-2200AP Wireless Access Point is an ideal solution for creating a wireless network or extending the range of an existing wireless network and the DWL-2200AP can be configured in any one of four modes: Access Point, Point-to-Point (PtP) bridge with another DWL-2200AP, Point-to-Multipoint (PtMP) bridge, or Repeater.

Indoors:• 98ft (30m) @ 54Mbps
• 108ft (33m) @ 48Mbps
• 121ft (37m) @ 36Mbps
• 151ft (46m) @ 24Mbps
• 203ft (62m) @ 18Mbps
• 223ft (68m) @ 12Mbps
• 256ft (78m) @ 9Mbps
• 302ft (92m) @ 6Mbps
Outdoors:• 328ft (100m) @ 54Mbps
• 968ft (295m) @ 11Mbps
• 1378ft (420m) @ 6Mbps

Can I add that to my outside computer and run an ethernet cable (or whatever I need) to the roof and mount the DWL-2700AP to gain access the inside router. I can use my laptop outside the building with no problem. If I can mount that to the roof I should be able to get my 655 to reach the 2700AP as the access point.

Please check the following diagram to understand the WDS mode efficiently.

Yes, the DWL-2700AP is designed to endure almost any outdoor condition!

Basically you need to have two APs to operate in WDS mode and only the first DWL-2700AP will be connected to the DIR-655. First AP to second AP will be wireless, which we called WDS mode.
