Re: DNS-325 - Compatible HDDs
« Reply #30 on: June 25, 2012, 08:53:26 AM »

Thank you for responding to my problem…

Both drives (label) clearly state: 3.0TB WD30EZRX
I downloaded the firmware from the Canadian DLink website: http://www.dlink.ca/products/default.aspx?pid=DNS-325&tab=3

Post upgrade my DNS-325 clearly shows that the 1.02 is the current firmware.

Here’s a few more things I can test
1)   I will test the 325 by formatting a 1 TB drive (a matching spare to my operating Raid 1)
2)   If this works, I will try reverting back to firmware 1.01, and then upgrading again (this time I’ll download the firmware from the US DLink site)
http://www.dlink.com/products/default.aspx?pid=DNS-325&tab=3

Thanks for the update. Please post back with your results.
Are there other DNS-325 owners who successfully (or unsuccessfully) used this model HDD?

Update re WD30EZRX problem.
Not good news…

Cannot revert back to FW 1.01.   The 325 reports an error “Upload Firmware Fail.  Please retry again”.   Tried downloading from both the US and the CA DLink download sites-The 325 web app gives an error on both attempts.

Reinstalled the US FW 1.02.   Same problem.  Stalls when starting the disk format.   The system shows the format progress bar but there is no drive activity.

From what I have read, it surely looks like the FW 10.2 did not install correctly????
*I was able to format a Hitachi HDT72010SLA360  1TB without any problem.

Looks like I'm out of options

Has DLink validated any 3TB drives?

From your list is appears not...If I was to purchase different 3TB HDs, I would likely run into the same problem.

As I've indicated in my earlier post, the WD30EZRX is in D-Link's european compatibility list since 04-Oct-2011.

PS do you get them formatted if you directly SATA-attach them to a computer?

Once a DNS-325 is upgraded to FW v1.02, the unit cannot revert back to FW v1.01. D-Link indicated that this constraint was included by design. In any event, FW v1.01 does not support 3TB HDDs, while FW v1.02 does support 3TB HDDs.

As I've indicated in my earlier post, the WD30EZRX is in D-Link's european compatibility list since 04-Oct-2011.

The WD30EZRX is now posted on a US compatibility list (see my prior post).

Thanks for the updated list and confirming that the WD30EZRX has been verified by DLink.

Update re WD30EZRX problem.
* YES good news…and a few more challenges

My experience with 3TB and the 325 was NOT plug and play.
1)   In Win7 under - Computer/Manage/Disk Manager:  remove/delete all volumes and create a single simple volume (2794.52 GB), format using defaults (did not use quick – format took approx. 5 hours)
2)   DNS-325 (ok now) formatted as a single volume without any issues
3)   In Win7 Disk Manager, quick formatted the 2nd disk
4)   In the 325, added the second disk and selected Raid 1 – it appeared to work but it formatted degraded
5)   In Win7, tried to format under Win7, but is froze at 4%
6)   Now Win7 cannot detect the disk under BIOS and Disk Manager - WD Data LifeGuard cannot detect the disk…
7)   Now waiting for a replacement disk from WD

I am not expecting any issues with the replacement disk

David at home

Update - Aug 23rd, 2012.  Took some time to receive the replacement disk.
The bad disk was the issue.

All is well now.  This confirms that WD30EZRX 3TB are compatible...

I'm glad things are starting to look up for you (and your DNS-325). Let's hope that a bad HDD is the culprit. Please post back when you receive your replacement.

Re: DNS-325 - Compatible HDDs
« Reply #39 on: August 07, 2012, 08:05:23 PM »

I have a pair of Seagate 500GB drives running in RAID 1 for well over a year with no problems. But I was running out of space, and came on the D-link boards to see what 2TB drives were recommended. To my surprise, the only D-link tested drives of this size were not available anymore.

After some research on these boards and on the internet, I have decided to change the drive configuration in my DNS-325 & DNS-321 from RAID 1 to Standard before I have any problems. This is because my Seagate drives were not Enterprise edition drives, or RE drives. What I found was:

"RAID-specific time-limited error recovery (TLER) - Pioneered by WD, this feature prevents drive fallout caused by the extended hard drive error-recovery processes common to desktop drives."

Do you agree? I know I have to backup my data and reformat both drives. What do you think?

The DNS-325 has 2 500 GB Seagate ST3500320AS drives installed, running RAID 1.
The DNS-321 has 2 160 GB ExcelStor Technology drives installed running RAID 1.

The first list below contains published D-Link USA approved and verified Hard Drives (HDDs). The second list contains HDDs tested by D-Link forum community end users. If you would like to contribute a HDD you personally tested to this list, please post the HDD make/model/capacity, configuration, length of time in use, and observations (e.g. stability, performance, etc) as a reply to this thread.
