Here's my config:
Toshiba laptop, with a DWA-140 USB wireless adapter, communicating to a DIR-655 Router.  Attached to the router is a DNS-323 NAS.

I plug in a SD card into my laptop and initiate a transfer of many pictures from the SD card to a folder on the NAS.  Total size less than 1gb.  In the middle of the transfer, I get a message the network drive is no longer available.  This happened 3 times!

At first I thought it was the DNS-323, so I recycled the power.  Then on the third time it happened, I went to Firefox to get to here (support), and I could not reach the internet.  That made me think the DIR-655 was having the problem.

Jumbo frames on the DNS-323 are already disabled.

I am running Windows XP SP3.

Are there log files or something I can look at to help identify which component is the culprit?

Thanks,

Repeat your transfer test with the laptop (temporary) wired to the router.
This should help to determine if the problem is in the wired or wireless part of your network.

Good call MIG.  That narrows it a bit.  I hope you have a solution!

Before I did what you suggested, i tried it again over the wireless setup.  Same error.  I immediately went to Firefox to get to the internet.  No connection.  That seems to confirm it is NOT the DNS-323 NAS.

I did your suggestion, twice.  I hooked the laptop to the router via hardwire.  I transfered (copied) the files twice to 2 different folders on the NAS.  Both successful.

I then did it again wirelessly.  Same error.  I tried the internet again.  no connection.

In Network connections I "repaired" the wireless connection and I then can get to the internet.

By the way, I am trying to copy 119 files that is 203MB.

Next suggestion?

Thanks,

Search the forum for "Deauthentication" this is commonly reported problem.

One solution was reached by upgrading wireless client drivers

Are you in an apartment complex or in a residential area?

I'll try upgrading the drivers.  I have a weeks vacation looming in 2 days, so I may not get to it before that.  We'll see.

But a question on the drivers.  I am NOT using the Toshiba built in wireless service.  I am using the Dlink DWA-140 USB adapter for my wireless connection.  It would be that driver that I would update...true?  Is there some other component of the Toshiba or Windows that I should update?

I am in a single family home.  My router is in the next room.  I get excellent signal strength.

Thanks,

You may try the driver from the original chipset manufacturer of the DWA-140, Ralink.
These drivers work very stable with the DIR-655 connection.

http://www.ralinktech.com.tw/data/drivers/IS_AP_STA_RT2870_D-1.4.1.0_VA-2.3.1.0_RU-2.2.2.0_VA-2.2.7.0_AU_2.1.2.0_VA-2.1.2.0_031309_1.0.8.0_Free.exe

The driver tool looks a little bit different but is very functional.

Uninstall the old drivers completely before using the new ones.

I am back from vacation and am working on my problem again.

For the Ralink drivers...
The driver for the DWA-140 is the one for the RT2870 chipset.  (I hope I got that right)
Which driver is for the DIR-655?  Same?

DIR-655 needs no driver.
Each firmware from 1.11 upwards is suitable and stable in wireless connection.

And yes you got that right, it's the RT2870 driver.
I'm using these Ralink drivers for a long time as they provide a better tool with more settings and are stable. No disconnects, no deauthentication.

Use WAP2/PSK encryption with AES only, it is the best choice.

An update and a question.

I installed the Ralink RT2879 driver for the DWA-140.
I just looked at the log file and no "deauthentication" messages.
My backups, which use the link to the NAS, have worked smoothly.

So, I am very happy with the new driver.

About the Ralink utility......
At first I use Raconfig as the configuration utility.  But the laptop would NOT automatically connect on a restart.  I changed to zero configuration, and it seems to automatically connect on a restart.
Did I miss something on the Raconfig?

Both components (DIR-655, DWA-140) are "N" devices.  The transmit link speed is 130mbps, and the receive link speed is 104mbps.  I assume they are measuring the speed between the DWA-140 and the DIR-655.  Or are they measuring speed to the internet?  Anyway, is that good? excellent? or?
If it can be improved, which of the configuration parametrs do I tweak and how?

Thanks,
