Title: Firmware 1.21 Beta 08 Feedback
Post by: FurryNutz on December 09, 2009, 01:49:26 PM
I for one have been having wireless random disconnects of the N mode on my MacBook Pro. Just chating with a buddy on line MSN and was disconnected from that site once, then 2 minutes later, the wi-fi on my Laptop  was disconnected and cycling thru trying to find another connection. It reconnected about 15 seconds later. Using A1 HW and 08 FW. Log entries report that when I got online today and after the loss of wi-fi, it reported the association of the LT back online with the router right at the time of signal loss.

Wireless when down again today. This time I couldn't even get back on. I noticed the channel was set for 40, I set it to 36. Will see what happens. Again, chatting on MSN.

A1 HW, B08 FW.

I couldn't get reconnected smoothly after these disconnects today so I though maybe I could be the OS. I switched to OSX 10.5.8 from OSX 10.6.2 and 10.5.8 is doing the same thing. Wireless is randomly disconnecting the LT from the 4500. Thinking of going back to B03. Wireless need some work me thinks.

A1 HW, B08 FW, N mode wireless only.

I've been using the B08 FW since it was released and it's been running rather well for me! So far, as all the previous releases of the beta's this one is very stable. I've been changing the configurations so my up times have been varying due to those changes. I've yet to see any uncommanded disconnects or degradation of up or download speeds. My longest uptime was 3 days before making changes and rebooting to store those changes. I'm using A2 hardware, Googles public DNS. Client computers are able to connect to home server without a hitch, PS 3's, XboX, Laptops, desktops, Ipod, PSP, wired and wireless all seem to be having no problems. I'm going to leave this present config be and see how long it runs!!!!
So far it's working for me. I have 2 days several hours of up time at the present. I"LL BE BACK ;D

A2 FW 1.21B8 router just rebooted itself again. Approximately after 2 days and 10 hrs.  That is 2 reboots this week.  Thinking about going back to 1.21B3.

My A1 has been running stable for the last 2 days since the upgrade. I know initially, it takes about 4 days to start acting a fool.

My downloads aren't locking up as before and I tested a download with my HD DVR to stress test and I was able to run Youtube vids with no issue. Netflix did crap out when I started it up but I can say for sure if it's an issue with the router. The real test will come when I set up the PS3 on Christmas Day for the kids. I have been messing around with it when in the house alone and everything network related (PS Home, Playstation Store, etc) was fine.

However, I do have a mess of dropped packets on wireless since going to the beta.

Also seeing alot of errors and drop over wireless. I shut off the wireless on the 4500 fully and connected a different wireless N router to check to see if I'm seeing the same disconnect and make sure my MacBook Pro HW is working ok. Will run it for a day or 2 and see.

The Router with Firmware 1.21 B08 continues to operate flawlessly as of this posting. As noted below my up & download speeds are holding consistent as far as cable goes. I'm at 4 days 20 some odd hours with no glitches, disconnects or uncommanded reboots. My hopes are that this latest iteration of F/W will be the one.
COMMENT: When I first purchased the DGL 4500, the original A1, I had no need to look at up times or all the other parameters that pointed to the health of this router. Perhaps it will do it again, then i'll say this router is bullet proof.

Can you tell me how to run a syslog on the unit?  I checked the current log under the status page but it's pretty much clean since I had turned it off.  I'm going to reload b8 suing the 30-30-30 method and not reload a config file.  If you tell me how to run syslog, I'll be glad to do it next time it reboots.

BTW, I'm on Macs running Snow Leopard.

1.21 b08 on my RMA'd and replaced unit seems to be a lot more stable than 1.21 b03 was on the last unit -  no glaring lockups, everything works the way I want it to, and though there are a lot of errors on wireless, nothing is screaming bloody murder at me, especially my DROID, so all is good.

Going on 18 Days and no lockups. Lookin' good.

Still a lot of wireless errors but good download and streaming connections.

Netflix on PS3 runs flawlessly and I have 5 other wireless devices running off of the 4500.

Hardware is A1 with current beta FW.

My question is, After upgrading the firmware, do you guys reset the router back to factory default? Or does the router hold on to the existing configuration?

If it holds on with the exisiting config does it still run fine?

Furry,

That's a dope avatar!!
Title: Re: Firmware 1.21 Beta 08 Feedback

Yes the FW resets back to factory and ur current configuration is wiped out. Thats why you save off the Configuration file before you update. After the FW is updated, restore from the Configuration file which saves the hassle of re-setting up everything.

Thats my main man on Halo, Thanks. I love him hehe.

I've got an A1 running firmware 1.15
Overall Wireless speed and connection strength is pretty weak, but the router is stable and there are very few errors (see below).  There are three wireless connections and no hardwired connections to the router, so wireless performance is key.

I'm hesitant to try the 1.21b8 firmware, because there is no back-flashing, and that it pretty much voids your warranty.

You could try the v1.16 I believe. Don't use the v1.21 NA from the main web site. IF you do chose to use v1.21, use Beta 03. Wireless seems more stable. Beta 08 has random disconnects. Im using it right now. Been good so far.
Title: Re: Firmware 1.21 Beta 08 Feedback

I did try 1.16 months ago and quickly flashed back to 1.15.  The dropped packets and errors were in the gazillion range.
Title: Re: Firmware 1.21 Beta 08 Feedback

Ok, well, can you regress to an earlier version of 1.1x? Can't remember if you can go back from 1.15 or not. I can understand not willing to hop to 1.21 Beta 03. I must say it seems very good, however still dropping packets but not as much as your currently reporting. I presume the DLink is aware and working on improving WiFi.
Title: Re: Firmware 1.21 Beta 08 Feedback
Post by: qtmod on January 08, 2010, 08:13:50 AM
Yeah, well if you look at my post history, you'll see the wireless signal issues have been going on since October of 2008.  I've tried pretty much everything.  Its really sad that even in the latest beta firmware there are still lots of wireless packet drops and errors.

This is why I've stuck with firmware 1.15 for so long.  Its fairly stable, very little drops/errors, but wireless signals are pretty weak.  I've heard others have RMA'd, but I can't go without a router for an indefinite amount of time, since we use it for business.
Title: Re: Firmware 1.21 Beta 08 Feedback
Post by: FurryNutz on January 08, 2010, 09:29:54 AM
I presume that the router and other wireless devices are in close proximity? Not floors or walls of separation? It could be a HW issue. My router is in my office at the far end of my house, top floor. I get great signal both in the living room which is about 30 feet from the office and downstairs in the den which at the farthest point is 35-40 feet from the office. I presume that the antennas have been checked. What happens if you move swap antennas? Also what does the signal look like if you try using a Mode only, like B or G or N mode only? Try using 2.4 or 5Ghz only? I know that if your using mixed modes, the signal strength can go down since it has to produce all the modes at the same time. I did notice a while back that using single modes will up the signal strength.
Title: Re: Firmware 1.21 Beta 08 Feedback
Post by: qtmod on January 08, 2010, 09:56:02 AM
I've tried everything.  I've found the best signal to work with wireless is 2.4ghz, fixed wireless g, NO Security, WISH and SPI disabled.  However overall speed is lower than with 5ghz and Wireless N.  Also, running a router with all these great features (which is what I paid for) is NOT an option, or an excuse.

I have stayed away from these forums for a few months, because I get so aggrivated every time I look into my issues.  I realize everyone is trying to help, but there's only so many "reposition your antennas" or "did you try x and y" that I can handle.  I worked as a network administrator for a large company (35+ offices) for over ten years.  If there is anything to be tried, I have done it...aside from flashing a beta firmware that may brick my device and is not back-flashable.

Can understand that man. And I don't know everything and don't try to toot my own horn. I can relate to your frustrations. I have been trying to help many people on here and to help DLink in there improvements for the 4500 in all the information here. I know that if you probably call DLink they might have you update to the v1.21NA on there web site. Please don't do this. This wont brick the unit however the performance is horrid and I'm surprised they still have it posted. I've been a troubleshooter for about the same period of time that you've been doing networking. Just trying offer some other solutions for you in case you don't think of them either. I've been updating my unit with the various FW updates and have not bricked the unit. Not to say that I'm perfect either however I'm fairly comfortable in the updates. Just so long as you run the FW update via wired connection. Only thing I think of is to run the v1.21 Beta 03. If you call DLink they will probably ask you to do this anyways before they send you an RMA, not sure but logic might dictate that. One guy on the other forum mentioned turning off all logging save Firewall, System and Critical. Could try turning off all but not sure if this will have any effect on WiFi though.

On Friday evening, I was using Skype over wireless, and for some reason it kept causing the entire router to reboot using 03 Beta.

I decided to move up to 08 Beta, and it's been running solid for me.  Got to use the original settings, with nothing really disabled.  Skype seems to work too!

Not sure why it was crashing it though over wireless.

I'll end up doing more thorough testing soon probably.

I haven't had a chance to report again.  It rebooted a few times more after just doing some basic streaming.  I'm using N/G Mixed, and normally never ever had a problem.  I moved it back down to G, so hopefully it'll be more stable.  Definitely needs to get fixed still.

I agree, the Wifi section needs a lot of TLC for sure. So far N mode only on Beta 3 seems fairly stable. Haven't noticed a lot of disconnects like Beta 08. These issues are mode only or mixed mode issues. Just needs fixing.  :P

Great find!!!  Seems to have worked for me as well.  Any other settings disabled or have you left everything else default?

KEWL, sounds like this could be a work around for some of the Wireless issue. Will check it out tonight when I get home.

Beta 08 is the best one in the 1.21 series so far.  When I first loaded it I got nightly disconnects while playing TF2.  That went on for about a week and then they just stopped.  Very strange.

No VoIP issues like beta 03 had.  No slowness or disconnects like the original 1.21NA had (after the first week of drops while gaming).

Though my wife took my DGL-4500 to FL to visit her parents and I've been using a FortiGate-60 in it's place.  I must say, the FG-60 is noticeably more responsive, but then it's a professional grade small office firewall so I would hope so.

What HW version are you using?  ??? I'm on A1 and only thing I had problems with was the WiFi N Mode only. Random disconnect there.

First off I would like to thank you guys for being out here to interact with the public while the firmware is being patched. I know it must be frustrating having things break in each release and having to listen to us. This wireless N animal has caused a lot of problems for all the manufacturers. But I think D-link is close.
I received my RMA replacement a few months ago and never set it up because I didnít have a test environment and I was already running stable with a different replacement. I decided to give it a go with the A2 you sent me so that I didnít completely waste your time and efforts. My results are completely not what I expected.
I booted up the router with the 1.12 firmware preloaded and I experienced the lock ups. And some of my server stuff was getting randomly blocked (UT 2004 was unusable, Rune would fall off the server lists do to UDP issues, UPnP was horrible, network discovery from windows 7 would crash the router, and I couldnít get to my proxy). At this point I also had a new ISP. For the 1.12 test it seemed to run slightly better with the A2. ISP side seemed a little better as well.
I then loaded 1.21 beta 8 (I downloaded it as beta 8 and it shows on the firmware page as Ď1.21NA, 2009/11/23í). It ran flawlessly for 4 days. At that point I loaded some more settings, turned on all the servers, and enabled UPnP. The router was up for 28 days and then my MODEM rebooted because of an upgrade from my ISP. I didnít touch the router and it ran another 10 days. At this time I was configuring my modem for static IP addresses. I still did not touch the router.
To this day it is still running. During this whole time the wife and I have been playing a LOT of MW2 on Xbox Live (both have OPEN NAT with only UPnP handling the requests), I have downloaded approximately 120 gigs of torrents, My servers have handed out roughly 90 gigs of FTP files, The web servers have been up 24 hours a day, My game servers have been up for about 20 days, I have been on VPN a handful of times, and My internal network has probably moved close to 3 Terabytes due to a re-org I am doing. All of the wireless devices have stayed connected in mixed mode and WPA2/WPA Personal (I have only tested speeds of 130 at this time but I am going to make the adjustments to get 300 on two laptops). I am still getting 50 ms response times on the servers and in game on Xbox Live. Also, I can still access the configuration pages internally and externally as quickly as the day I loaded the firmware.
The only issue I am having is a slight latency issue in UT2004 and an IM proxy will not pass data through. I will try the new firmware and see what my results are. I will post in the thread for it. Again thank you and if there is anything you need from me, just shoot me a PM.

Tired of messing around with D-Link and all the broken promises?  Want to roll your
dgl-4500 firmware back to 1.15 right now?  The two links below have the fix. This
is not a joke.  It works.  Both sites are very reputable and people have tested it.

http://www.ispgeeks.com/wild/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=4224#15926

and

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r23720820-downgrade-possible-DGL4500-12xNA115

Follow the simple instructions and tell d-link where to stuff it.

Christmas was a little late this year but better late than never!

Been working well on my A1 HW since I applied it. No disconnects that I notice or see in my logs. XBL is great aside the normal lag crap coming from there servers.
