Title: what security do I need
Post by: Kinz on October 07, 2009, 06:01:14 AM
If I have WEP enabled on my 2310, and have antivirus, with Vista Firewall, do I really need another firewall product.  They seem to be more trouble than they're worth, and also cause computer conflicts and problems.  I don't use this computer for any government spy things -- just a simple home computer with a wireless laptop.  Any thoughts?  Thanks

Short answer is you probably are ok, if you are not in a crowded location as WEP is easy to crack and the more networks in your area, the more chance that someone would be looking...

As for software the golden rule is to use ONE of each (firewall, A/V scanner etc) type of software at a time as two A/V scanners running at the same time will thrash and eat up all the resources of your PC.

Here is some "light" reading (ok... so it's not all light reading), but there is lots about this subject here:
