DIR-601 Network filter is not functioning
« on: May 24, 2013, 07:56:20 PM »

DIR-601
Hardware A1
Firmware 1.02

Using the Network Filter page I have been able to block one LAN device, by accident (I forgot about my wireless Roku).  But have not been able to block MAC addresses outside of my network.  I am using the "Turn MAC filtering ON and ALLOW computers listed to access the network" selection.  Did not include my desktop computer at work (not at my house) on the list but was still able to get into my network like nothing was setup.  Seems pretty straight forward on how it should work and that it has been made fool proof as you turn on the feature and allow which computers access in the same step, then click Save Settings.

Btw, side note but I cannot adjust the date of the router past 2012.  Is this Y2K all over again?  Also, it seems to be really slow to respond after upgrading to 1.02 and now get a "Please want... The gateway is currently measuring your network connection .  Accessing this web page might have an effect on the measurement.  This page will refresh shortly."  Getting about twice the speed I am paying for, which very much not the norm but the graph looks like an edge of the a handsaw.  Thanks for any help anyone can be, ahead of your answers.

Link>Welcome!

Mac Filtering is for only devices that connect on the LAN side of the router, not the WAN side, so if you have remote access set up or any ports configured to allow your work PC to access the router or network, then Mac Filtering doesn't apply to this configuration.

There is a known issue with the Year date on some of of the older series routers:

If you have QoS or Traffic Shaping enabled, please give the reboot and measurement about 1 minute more after it's back to ready to complete the measurement process.

If your ISP speed is above 2Mb, test with Traffic Shaping turned off and do a speedtest on wired PC to check to make sure you are getting your paid ISP speeds UP and down.

Well, I do have remote access to my work computer but I do not have anything setup to work the other way around.  So I have anything setup in my router to allow such.  So as far as I understand what I have there should be no reason why allow only a small list of MAC addresses would not stop those computers which are not on the Allowed list.

Clock issue is no biggy, but the MAC address and lack of speed is.

You shot over my head about the QoS or Traffic Shapping reboot.  I have the QoS engine Enabled, Automatic Uplink speed, measured Uplink speed is shown as 2048 kbps.  I have 10 megs down, 1 meg up from a cable provider.  Have not found Traffic Shaping in my menu.  Thanks

IF your paying 1 up from your ISP and getting 2Mb reporting on the router, then thats good. Is the Down reporting 10MB on a wired lan speed test?

That was a brain fart on my part as I did not pay attention to what uplink meant. Is this a automatic test or something in which I should setup and then test?  I ask as my speedtest.net results choosing the closest best server and then it has to build up too .7 to almost 1M upload. Wireless using iPhone (38ms ping, 7.66m down, .785 up).  Get a lot of buffering and downgrades from 720 HD to 480 SD. All devices seem to give about the same subpar results. Any details on what I can check to solve Mac filtering issues? Thanks

" So I have anything setup in my router to allow such."

I meant to say, I have nothing setup in my router to allow my VPN connection to work.  Incoming traffic is what I wish to control.  I would think that my windows remote desktop connection VPN would not work correctly if I did not allow the MAC address on the work computer, but I have not added it to the list and it works like a charm.  Btw, I the only device I have been able to "block" by not added to the Allow list was my wireless Roku box.  So the MAC filtering has blocked Intranet wireless traffic only, not internet traffic and I have not tested intranet wired traffic.
