Cannot change DNS servers in Setup > Internet > Manual setup
« on: March 06, 2017, 05:31:16 AM »

As titled.  My Primary and secondary DNS setting boxes are not editable. I'm tearing my hair out and still cannot figure out how to change it.

Any help?

My router is revision A, firmware 1.09

What do you have your WAN settings set to? Static IP? DHCP? Also, have you tried enabling DNS relay under Network settings?

  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.

PC Web Browser Configurations
What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8, 9, 10 or 11, set compatibility mode and test again. (For older generation routers.)
Disable any security browser Add-ons like No Script and Ad-Block or configure them to allow All Pages when connected to the router.
Clear all browser caches.

I'm located in Singapore.

ISP: Starhub. FIbre Optic
WAN settings: DHCP
I use safari on MacOS.

I've been reading around the forum and cannot find the answer to my problem.  The closest I've found to my problem is in this thread
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=1097.0

However I don't have the Advanced DNS Service under Setup/Internet/Manual as suggested. I have tried to enable and disable the DNS Relay, and my setting fields are still grey out...

I understand that this router has reach its EOL... but this is such a trivial issue that it makes no sense why I can't edit it.  Hope you can help...  Thanks all.

Is this a retail version of the 868L or did your ISP give this to you?

just to clarify, the router is now mine, not a loaner. It's given as a promotional package. I try to debrand it if possible

Possible that your ISP has this on lock down if the unit came from them.

You are logging in as Admin to manage the router UI right?

The only think I know of is that if Advanced DNS is enabled then the manual DNS boxes are grayed out. At least for retail units. ISP supported units, not sure.
How did you apply the 1.09 FW? Via the UI?

Check with your ISP and see if they have any other recent updates and this maybe a unit they maintain.

If the unit is now yours, you might try doing the following:
Download most current version of FW for your region from the regional D-Link support site. You can use this one here if you choose to:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=65889.0

Follow the recover process and load the unpacked .bin file to the router at the recovery screen if you can get to this screen.
Emergency Recovery Mode

Thanks.  I tried to flash DD-WRT earlier but had problem connecting to the Fibre Optic network. I re-flashed the 1.09 via recovery mode (with instruction found on DD-WRT website).  Somehow my settings are preserved since pre-dd-wrt flash.  Maybe what it needs is a good factory reset.  Will try to reach out to the ISP as well.  Thank you for your help.

Try the recovery mode with v1.12 and see. Recover mode is supposed to wipe all and load the .bin file cleanly.
Use IE11 or FF if you do that.
Follow the process linked.

Those are the DNS used by Dlink when parental control is enabled in some way. See thread here. Do you have Access Control enabled Advanced > Access Controll as seen on page 81 of manual?

"I mentioned that in my first post...said that didn't work."

"However I don't have the Advanced DNS Service under Setup/Internet/Manual as suggested. "

I saw that they said they didn't "have" the setting, not that it was off or disabled. Also, I thought they were talking about DNS relay, not parental controls and/or Access Control. Could OP confirm?

I didn't have the Advanced DNS Service.
And I was talking about DNS relay -- on and off doesn't change the grey-out boxes.

I have figured it out.. Turns out I have mydlink service enabled.  I signed up for it during the first set up and forgot about it.  Unlinking the router from this service seem to fix the issue.

Thanks all for helping.

Interesting that MDL services prevented DNS from being changed. Oh well I guess you got it working.

Enjoy.  ;)
