DIR-855 - DNS Relay/Lock up.
« on: February 14, 2012, 04:23:22 AM »

I have the same issue as others with my DIR-855 locking up after several days and needing to be rebooted.
I see that disabling DNS Relay is supposed to be the fix for this problem and have today, done this, so I'll wait and see.

Can somebody explain why this is the fix though? It doesn't make sense to me that this should be the fix for the router locking up and needing rebooting unless of course there's a bug in the firmware that makes the router lockup whenthe DNS cache is at it's limit, whatever that limit might be?

This is the second DIR-855 I've had with this problem and I suspect it's why people sell them on too, they never actually find a fix and go back to using a product that doesn't fall over. My DIR-655 will stay up for months at a time (with the latest firmware), why should the 855 be so different?

Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this  :)

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

To answer a few of those questions...(I'm at work at the moment so this is the stuff I know)

ISP is O2 - DSL 15-17Mb
Linksys AM200 Modem in full bridged mode. The WAN IP my 855 gets is the public IP assigned to me by O2 - 88.188.xxx.xxx
Router firmware is 1.20
Internal network 192.168.0.xxx  DHCP enabled, all devices connecting are 'Auto', no static addresses. I don't however, have any reserved addresses with the exception of the wireless printer. (so that's something to look at).

I will take a look at the rest of the stuff when I'm at home.

However, without wanting to sound rude because I'm not trying to be...I was after an explanantion as to why the touted fix of disabling DNS relay should be the fix for the router locking up, showing as offline and dropping connected devices? (When it does this my modem is still connected I hasten to add and has been perfectly happy hooked up to a DIR-655 without issues, so it's not a line problem).

I appreciate the pointers you have given me but as an IT engineer myself (admittedly, not a D-Link router expert), there seems to be a lot of things to change to see if it solves a single problem. A single problem that a lot of people appear to have and, in my humble opinion, shouldn't have to jump through hoops to apply a 'workaround' to, if at all. They aren't the normal settings that you would expect to change on a router to stop it from dropping out...in fact, out of the box, I would not expect to have to alter anything to stop a router crashing..only alter settings to make it visible on a network etc. I never had this problem with my 655, it stayed up for...well, until I turned it off.

I'm not ungrateful for the advice and yes, I came here to ask so it is up to me to follow advice but it does seem like a lot of changes. I wouldn't expect to buy a car and then have to change the way it set up at the factory to stop it from breaking down...only to adjust it to my needs from a seating and mirrors etc point of view.

I lose my connection around once every seven days so I will see how it goes with the initial advise of turning off DNS relay and reserved addresses. I did that yesterday and rebooted. Again, I'm not sure why reserved addresses would stop the router from staying up?

I will also check the other items on your list and post back with the remainder of information.

Thank you for your quick response.

Seems there might have been an issue with DNS and the current version of FW your using.
Firmware   1.22NA   2/08/2010
Revision Info:   ¤ Fixed: Correct HNAP issue.
¤ Fixed: DNS relay issue (WAN Slowdown).
 ¤ Added: Advanced DNS descriptions.

There is v1.23NA as well which would include the DNS relay fix that v1.22 came out with.
This issue was the same code base I believe and was seen on my DGL-4500 router at the time. If I remember correctly, DLink came out with the fix for both around the same time frame. I would follow the FW update sticky process at the top of this forum and update your router with one of the newer version with the DNS Relay fix and post results. Please follow the sticky process though. Works well for updating FW.

Let us know how it goes.

Ah ok, didn't know you were in the EU. Yes, if there is a EU version, update using that. Just follow the FW update sticky process.

No offence here man. Ask away. What we are here for. Here to help. If we can't answer it then we will find the answers.

*******************************   :) UPDATE*****************************************

Having loaded the 1.23EU firmware update I am happy to say that my DIR-855 has now been up for 7 days 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Points to note possibly...
I have DNS Relay turned off.
I am using DHCP with reserved IPs.

I may try it with DNS Relay turned on but my guess is the firmware update has done the trick in this case.

***********************************************************************************

Thanks for the input...I'm now a  ;D UK user.

...and for anyone else looking at this because you have the same issue

I followed the firmware update sticky to the letter.
My advice on top of that...do save the config of the router but don't necessarily load it straight back on as you might think is easiest...follow the update sticky and then configure the router from scratch to be safe. It might take 5 minutes to do it's worth it.

Good to hear. Glad you got it working well.

I would test DNS relay and it's a preferred option to keep enabled. It works great when enabled. If your a tech or like to tweek then use at your discretion.

Enjoy.

9 days up and I've just turned DNS Relay back on. I'm pretty confident that it's not going to cause an issue this time...I'll post result either way.

Cheers
