Getting Wireless Disconnects
« on: February 02, 2011, 08:26:50 PM »

Hi....I've posted before about my setup.  However, I have one computer hard-wired to my 4500, and a new iMac wireless.  I also have an Android Cell Phone and a Kindle Wireless.  I don't do gaming, so I have Gamefuel off.  I am in Mixed wireless mode, so I get the benefit's of the N version of the Router to my iMac.  The wireless speed to my iMac is very fast, however, while I'm doing things on it, the signal is starting to totally drop once in a while.

WISH is enabled by default, and I tried to set up a Rule for it for the iMac, but keep getting an error message....So I do not have a Rule set up. Called D-Link, talked to Tier 2 support, they were of no help.  Any suggestions?  The iMac is in line of sight of the 4500, and I usually get full bars on the iMac, until they totally drop for a second or two.

Note: Everything was working fine until I tried to set up a Rule for the iMac.  It was never set up, however, WISH is still enabled.  Don't know if it's coincidence, for the Rule section is back to it's default settings, and no Rule is set up. ???

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?
What Wireless mode are you using?
What happens if you change the wireless mode to single mode G or N at 2.4Ghz and no security to test. Does it still disconnect?

What rule are you setting up for the iMac?
Are you using static IP addressing or DCHP?
Any other Wireless or Cordless phones in the area?

HW Version is A2
FW Version is 1.23NA
I have it set at mixed mode, and have not tried changing the mode, for I need mixed mode, for my wireless computer is N, and my other devices are g.  I have also not changed the Firewall status which is set.
I have no idea if the devices have a Static IP address, or where I look for that or if I should change them or what I should change them to.
I have a cell phone in the area connected to the 4500, and a DECt 6.0 Cordless phone at the other end of the room.
I have no Rule set for the iMac, for I'm not sure how to set it, for I get an error message when I do.

Since I need Mixed Mode, and I need a Firewall, what can I try other than changing those 2 things?  Thanks.

Ok,
You need to set up Static IP addresses on the 4500 router, thats in the Basic/Networking.
You'll see the last section that lists everything that is connected to the 4500, wired and wireless. Select the Reserve word option to the right on each row. This will auto fill in the Add Reservation section. Give it a name so you can easily ID each device. You can change the IP address to be sequntial if you want to or leave them to what they already are. Select the ADD button. Do this for each device.

I know you need mixed mode for WiFi. I would just use single to test and see how the connection performs.
I recommend using EndPoint Independent for both TCP and UCP firewall settings.
Check the cordless phone, if it's near the 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz frequency, this can cause interference issues.
There no need to set up any rules for the Mac. Just add it to a static IP reservation. I have mine set for this. Unless you have a specific application on the Mac that might need a application rule, you won't need any rules for the Mac.

Also what is your ISP service? DSL or Cable?
DO you know if the ISP Modem is stand alone or has a built in router?

My ISP is Qwest.....It is VDSL2.  My modem is a ZyXel Q100, which I think has some routing capabilities, however, I have it in Transparent Bridge mode (I believe it worked when I did it), and have the 4500 Set to PPPoE with a username and password.  The Internet light is not on in the front of my Modem, however, the Ethernet light blinks.  Qwest told me that in this case, I did set it up properly for Transparent Bridging.  Can't check it for I have no way to access my Modem interface, even by connecting it directly to my computer.

I'll try to figure out which of the IP addresses are my cell and Kindle.  I know how to find the IP address of he iMac.  I'll post again once I set all devices to Static IP's and I've tried it......Thanks.  :)

Question: Should I disable WISH altogether?

One more question: Do I also give my computer that's wired to the 4500 a Static IP?  Thanks again.  :)

Sure. I have ALL of my devices on my network assigned to static IPs.
