Title: can only access 1 website using direct connection and wifi
Post by: blueblackzinc on September 15, 2017, 08:21:49 AM
I can only access espn.co.uk... currently running 2.02 version

I flushed the dns
i tried tracking the packet but it was 100% lost
restore the router to factory setting on the device and online
renew the ip

currently living in dormitory where internet access only given to approved mac address. I see that my mac address on the device and the one online is slightly different. just the last letter is different. i'm using the one online.

i asked the network admin but he doesnt know how to deal with this

HELP.please.

Routers will have multiple MAC addresses. You will need to give them the WAN MAC address.

Open a browser and enter http://dlinkrouter.local./version.txt.  If you get rejected, log into the router first and then enter the URL. All the MAC addresses will be listed. Give them the WAN MAC.

I gave them wan mac address. The one on my router is apparently Lan mac address

I believe the one on the label is the LAN. Hopefully it will work for you now. Make sure to reboot the router if it doesn't connect.

So you are still only able to go to the one website?

In the router UI, are you getting a WAN IP address, gateway, and DNS server(s) addresses?

From your computer, can you ping 4.2.2.2 (click Start. in the box type CMD and press enter, at the prompt type ping 4.2.2.2 and press enter)? If yes, you are connected to the Internet. Try pinging a website - ping yahoo.com. If you are not getting replies, either DNS servers are bad or they are blocking your access.

yes. only 1 website.

not sure what WAN IP address is but gateway, and primary/secondary DNS are all there.

I can't ping anything. "request time out" and it was 100% loss

What is the WAN IP address see under the WAN section of the routers UI? 192.168.something or a ##.##.###.### address?

Is the router directly connected to the wall out let or a modem of some kind?

Try changing the WAN port speed from Auto to 100Mb and test.

Select on Go to Settings and there should be a WAN port speed selection there.

the 10.#.##.### is a private IP address however should still be able to get out.
Try different browsers, ie11, FF or Opera.

Can you do a tracert to google or some site?

Be sure your PC is using a Dymanic IP address obtain method for it's NIC and try different browser. Disable any PC security SW and browser add-ons temporarily.

no setting for WAN port.

tried different browser. still the same

i already disable everything. including firewall

however, I made progress. I clone my laptop MAC address to my router. I can google stuff but not open it. like i can google Facebook and when I click the link, it doesnt work. and I can open California DMV.

Since you cloned your PC, you might do a full reboot with both PC and router then test again...
Might ask the ISP service support about what maybe needed if anything on connected routers with there services.

That doesn't make sense to me that you are connecting. Your Internet settings on the router had 0.0.0.0 for an IP address.

Is the cable from the wall connected to the Internet port on the router?

I got 5 port behind the router. 4 black and 1 yellow. For the one connected from the wall outlet to the router, i put it in the yellow port. the cable from my laptop to the router, i put it in one of the black one.

I'm going to be away for an hour. Gonna have to cook. but i'll be back.

I do not think this is a router issue. If you are connecting to some sites (as long as it is not cache) you are getting connected to the Internet. The router by default will not block any websites.

On your computer, you may want to statically assign the DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) and see if you can get to other sites.

Did you try pinging 4.2.2.2? and yahoo.com?

I can ping yahoo.com and 4.2.2.2   0% loss. all 4 packets

changing the dns to google's DNS doesnt work. both wifi and wall>router>laptop

Even when I use direct from the wall to my laptop(this connection is okay)  and change the dns to google's, it stopped working.

The router is working. Check with your admin, sounds like they are blocking sites or doing some kind of filtering (may be blocking google dns).

Also is could be something on their network. Not sure how they wired the dorm rooms. Does another person there have a router to just test your room connection?

Is the WAN IP address in the same subnet as your computer's IP address? On your screen shot the LAN side was 10.x.x.x. If the WAN IP is using 10.x.x.x then you will have problems.

Reset the router, go back in and clone the mac address (using your laptop) and leave the default settings (change your wireless network name/pw though). Dont change any other settings and test.

if the admin blocking google DNS, what are my option? cause I asked him if he's using google dns, he said no. just let it be automatic.

how do I check for WAN IP n subnet? I checked on the router site, but no WAN IP

edit: I kinda feel like I'm close to the solution now. getting closer each step.  :)

This is why I am confused. From your screen shot it shows no WAN IP settings so I have no idea how you are connecting to the internet unless it is all browser cache. If you do not have a WAN IP, the router is not connected to the dorm network.

You may want to contact tech support. This is probably easier over the phone :)

which tech support? I tried contacting d-link tech support but they dont speak english. They put me on hold and just drop the call. I tried 8 times already.  but if it was cache, will I still able to google stuff? maybe I should try deleting all my cache and see what happen?? factory setting my router now.

What country are you in?

Verify that the cable from the wall is connected directly to the Internet (yellow) port on your router. Nothing should be in between it.

ftp://ftp2.dlink.com/PRODUCTS/DIR-842/REVB/DIR-842_REVB_MANUAL_2.01_EN_US.PDF (ftp://ftp2.dlink.com/PRODUCTS/DIR-842/REVB/DIR-842_REVB_MANUAL_2.01_EN_US.PDF)   pages 8-10

What color is the "globe" link light on the router (2nd from the left)?

When you connect to the router's UI (http://dlinkrouter.local.), on the home page is there a red check mark?  (page 22 in the manual)

OK good. The router looks like it is connected to the network.

On your computer, did you statically assign the settings or are you letting the router assign them (DHCP)?  What IP address, gateway, and primary DNS server address are you getting?

Yes. Settings look good. It SHOULD be working now.

When you "go" to the Internet on your laptop, do you launch anything other than a web browser (any 3rd party software)?

Do applications/programs that use the Internet work OK?

There may be some weird issue with the router and the network's router/gateway. Since your laptop works without the router something quirky is happening.

It is possible the router is broken but the settings are correct and you are connecting to the Internet (ping and some sites work) so most likely not.

Very strange...

all the light and green tick was there all along.

I can open youtube now  but sites like my uni webpage, facebook, n origin doesnt work. all with the same error "connection was reset" even ****hub.

I also notice that my cable connecting to 5ghz internet that I created before. AND my current download speed is 1MB on speedsmart. cant seem to check it on speed test. I usually get around 15MB while downloading.

my internet is either too slow or cant connect to my netflix app on laptop.

btw, I'm currently using my router and it works here.

So your Router's WAN IP is 10.255.255.10 and your Computer is 192.168.0.100

Try enable DMZ on your router.

Did you get this at a local store? I'd go get another one and test it. If the same problem, then something in the PC or ISP configuration needs to be looked at. You might have someone remote in with you using Teamviewer and have a look at your PC and the router settings.

If the problem doesn't appear, then we can rule the router faulty probably.

perhaps someone can check the PC and the router setting first? I'm a foreigner here and I dont speak the common tongue. Even if by chance the people there speak English, it would be very minimal.

Odd, there is a connection but its being filtered, possibly the school's  QoS system.

DMZ mode should have open up all ports, the router should not be blocking anything nor slowing it down.

You may need to try a different router, as suggested, to see if the behavior is the same.
