DIR-632 loosing wireless connections
« on: April 11, 2011, 10:22:19 AM »

Hi all,  I recently purchased a new DIR-632. Since there are no dedicated forums for it, I decided to post in this one.

Ever since I have installed the router, my wireless clients loose connection on a regular basis.
I have it setup as WPA2-PSK authentification, all my clients support WPA2.
I can surf the web for 1 hour, then the connection will be lost, I have to re-connect to the router.
Some times, it happens sooner than 1 hour, sometimes not.

Anyone got a clue on what I should be checking?

THank you

What WiFi mode are you using? Mixed? Try single mode G or Mixed G and N if you have N supported devices.
Any other WiFi routers in the area?
Any house cordless phones?
What ISP service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP modem do you have? Stand alone or built in router?

When it disco's you, do you see the signal drop before hand? Also, check the logs and they should show a disco error code. First thing I would try is setting a DHCP reservation. I have a feeling its more to do with the key re-authentication and that will show in the error.

I am using mixed mode, B,G and N
There are some other wireless routers in the area but they are not managed by me.
No cordless phones, just cell phones and blackberries
Rogers Cable ISP
The modem is a stand alone modem, no other functionalities built-in

I have changed mixed mode to G and N only. Will see how it goes.
Thanks for your help

I disabled B,G and N and only used Mixed Mode G and N as I have devices that require either one of these.
Issue still remains.

Next step is to disable the Auto-Scan feature. Will let you know how it goes.

Autoscan feature has been disabled. Tried both channels 1 and 6 and problem still exists.
Any one got a clue?

What happens if you set Single mode G only, No auto chl scan, set chl to 1, 6 or 11.
Test with out security on for temporarily.
I would test with ALL wireless devices turned off, accept for one. Test for a bit, then go to the next one and make sure each device works with the router by itself. Then turn them all on. See how it goes.

Might try turning off uPnP under Advanced/Networking. Heard sometimes this causes issues.
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.
Let us know.

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Same problem here.  Wireless broadcasting stops a couple of times a week.  LAN connections are not affected.  Wireless is back is I unplug/plug the router or reboot it (tools/system).  I've got 2 computers and both connections are lost at the same time: it has to be the router.  Same problem with a modem: has to be the router.  There are other routers in the area and I can see them with Inssider: only my router vanishes.  I doubt it has anything to do with interference though.  I've tried many of the possible configurations (including most of what FurryNutz proposes -  still have to reserve the IP addresses.)

I'm not quite sure what bits of the log are relevant.  Here are some lines that could be:

ath0: STA 00:18:e7:e0:e0:7f WPA: received EAPOL-Key 2/4 Pairwise with unexpected replay counter

ath0: STA 00:18:e7:e0:e0:7f IEEE 802.11: deauthenticated due to local deauth request

Thanks.

Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Proctection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

If there are other WiFi in the area then they can impact signal on the router. Use InSSIDer to see what channels are being used and set up manual on the channel that isn't used if any.

It was "mixed g and n", but I just changed it to "g" (connection currently lasts a couple of minutes only  :( )

Otherwise:
-Security: WPA-Personal, WPA Only, AES
-Short GI: off
-Extra wireless protection: I don't see that option under advanced wireless...
-Channel: 8 (other routers on 1, 6 and 11), and I've tried many others.  I use a 20
-Hardware Version: A1
-Firmware Version: 1.01NA

-ISP: DSL, stand alone, Siemens Speedstream 4200.  I wonder this could be relevant as LAN connections are always good.

-Two computers are connected: 1. Dell desktop with DWA-552. 2. Dell laptop with the original Broadcom wireless adapter.

Try Auto TPIK and AES on Single mode G only. Then try No security as a test. I'm curious if any mode works.

"G only" didn't work too well, but I didn't lose connection for 1 day and 19 hours so far with "B only" and WPA2 Only/AES.

This happen with both computers connected at the same time or one at a time.

Are there any other WiFi in the near by vicinity?
Can you use InSSIDer application to see. I'm wondering if there could be others near by effecting this router and if not, I would suggest you take this router back and get another or different model or RMA it. This router isn't behaving correctly. Let us know if you have other WiFi around you.
