How to make sure PC can only use 1 assigned IP address
« on: February 06, 2011, 02:44:38 PM »

I have set up DHCP reservations to assigned IP addresses based on MAC address. I have to block my kids access at times, and when I do this they simply change their IP address and they circumvent the blocking.

Other than punishing the kids (which hasn't worked  - and they need computers and Internet for homework), is there anyway to lock a computer to MAC address to IP address so if they change it they won't get network/internet access?

I also tried to set up network filtering and I put in all the PCs and devices I wanted to provide access for, including the router, but when I save changes I can no longer access the internet or the router. I have to do factory reset to get back into router config.

Also, I'm on 1.30WW. I know 1.34 exists, which I tried on a previous router which died and was replaced by RMA; but this didn't solve any problems.

Thanks
Tanya

I would set up there PC accounts as users or limited users and disable any changes to Administrator options like stuff in the control panel or Network settings. They can open some options like this however they can't change the settings with out being an administrator.

So are you saying that the DIR-655 has no features or facilities for locking down a machine to one address by MAC address?

Setting up users as limited users is not an option. With 10 PCs in the house that would create an enourmous administrative nightmare for me, and even more conflict than I have now.

No ACLs? Network filtering? Reservations? Nothing at all on this router?

What I would do is disipline the children if they were making changes to the computers.

Aside from that,  I would setup your DHCP address range to the exact number of computers in your house and then make a DHCP reservation for each one.  Then go into the Access Control and setup a rule that Internet access is only avaialble to that address range.

The easiest way though is to tell the kids to stop changing things, if you let them get away with the little stuff then they will move on to bigger stuff.

Ok, thanks for the replies.

What I'm reading is that the DIR655 has no way to lock a MAC address to an IP such that a change to IP will not work.

thanks anyway

I think you might be able to use Mac Filtering and Scheduling. However thats is mainly for gaining access for specified Mac addresses. However I don't think these routers have the ability to tie IP addresses to one Mac and keep them on the same IP if the user changes the IP on the Network card themselves. Your talking corporate or enterprise level router possibly in this case.

I would segregate out the trouble makes and limit there accounts on the PCs. There are just some administrative bullets you have to bite in the IT world. I maintain 20 PCs currently.

davevt31 was correct.

What you need to do is go to Setting > Network Setting

In the DHCP Server Settings section set the available DHCP IP address range to the exact number of devices that use the connection.

If 10 devices then set the range 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.109

Since all IP are reserved they can only have the same IP all the time or will not have a connection.
