DDNS malfunction
« on: April 09, 2012, 01:40:04 AM »

DIR-615 is HW version B2, firmware 2.25
Configured properly for DDNS and once in a blue while it can connect to the DDNS service (mostly after a manual reboot). However most of the time the hostname at the DDNS server remains out of date. Is there a cure?

What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the 4500 gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

The DIR-615 router is located in Israel and is cable attached to a stand alone ADSL modem of the local telecom firm. It is located in a different location than where I am, thus I am not able to verify the modem's model. Anyway I don't understand the importance of the rest of the information being asked - The DIR615 is working properly and there are *NO* connectivity problems; after a reboot the DDNS function does start successfully. Besides, the router's internal clock is ALWAYS synchronized from NTP, it ALWAYS emails its log over the Internet, and its local LAN users are happy. Only DDNS is 'disconnected'.

Have you checked with the DNDS services to ensure they are working correctly? Could be a connection between them and the router that keeps dropping. The reason for the extra questions and suggestions is to help us get a better idea if what you have running, helps us give you better feedback and give you some suggestions to try.

Does the router work if you don't use DDNS and use just ISP DNS?

Don't want to barge in one someone elses problem and solution, but maybe it helps if you know:

I have the same problem.

I'm located in the Netherlands and run dlinkddns on a dir-655. This has been working for years now, but recently I discovered the IP is not updated. Some investigation showed that the connection with dlinkddns is dropped. If I power down the router and power up again, connection is established, but dropped again after a few hours.

I also own a DNS323, which also has a dddns client. I tried to switch to this client, but the same problem occurs.

There is v2.27 for Rev B2 EU routers.
I would review the FW update sticky in this forum to upgrade and test again.

Lex, what is your Rev on your router and what is currently loaded? Does the DDNS work on the DNS unit and not the 615? Does ISP DNS work on the 615?

I have a DIR655 Rev.A4 running firmware 1.35EU.

DDNS used to work fine on the router. when I discovered the problem I tried switching to the DNS323. Never tried that before so I don't know if it ever worked on that device. Anyway, it doesn't work now.

What's ISP DNS?

You are most welcome to join, Lexs. Perhaps by joining forces we can move this problem out of the way. I feel that there must be some fault with the router's DDNS client. I've tried all possible DDNS services with the same result: only after a manual recycle is the router's DDNS status "connected"; however most of the time it is 'disconnected' and its hostname is out of date. I test the same thing concurrently with two 3COM routers, on the same DDNS accounts which fail with the DIR-615, and they always succeed.

ISP DNS is what you get from you ISP Modem and the ISP service themselves. Disable DDNS and check and test to make sure the router gets ISP DNS under Status/Device Info/WAN section. There should be Primary and 2ndary DNS Adresses there.

Furry, aren't you confusing DNS and DDNS? These two topics are completely unrelated. If what you call ISP DNS hadn't worked, the local LAN users whouldn't be able to access any URL on the Internet....
Eli

P.S.
I'll be waiting for the result of your research regarding ver 2.27; thanks

What asking if ISP DNS is working for knowledge that the routers is correctly getting ISP DNS.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

What region are you located eli?

Yes, ISP DNS is working, and the router is correctly getting the two ISP DNS addresses. The problem which had been raised here is DDNS (dynamic DNS client), which is unrelated to ISP DNS. Thanks.

I would recommend trying the FW versions for your region if available from the regional DLink web site. Please follow the firmware update sticky for the process.

If that doesn't fix your issue, then I would recommend contacting your regional local DLink support office for additional help with this router and DDNS as DLink owns DDNS.

I get on the status page both addresses from my ISP. I use 1.35EU, as far as I know the most recent FW for Europe.

I'll try contacting European Dlink support... :-\

Didn't get around to contacting Dlink yet.

However, last few days I stay connected to Dlinkddns without problems. And my IP address getss updated perfectly. So problem solved all by itself. Weird.

Another weird thing - I forgot to turn off the agent in the DNS323. It turns out that agent updates to the local IP adress of that device (192.168...). So that's rather useless.
