WiFi Connection Problems with DIR-615 Router
« on: December 26, 2011, 08:38:02 PM »

My system:
Desktop Computer, Windows XP  (router connected via Ethernet cable)
Arris TM402 Cable Modem (Earthlink Internet through Comcast)
+ wireless devices I'm trying to connect.

I power cycled everything overnight, and ran the various Wizards available
to setup everything.
Result:
Desktop computer works fine.
Samsung Epic 4G works fine, send/receive email, download files, etc.
Nook Color: connected, but no internet.
Macbook Pro:  unable to connect, etc.  "connection timeout" message.

So I guess I may have done it correctly, since my android phone works well.
It seems like I need to make some adjustments in the router settings to
get everything else working.

I really need my Macbook Pro to connect to Wifi. I need help to do this!
Any help greatly appreciated!
Best,
Ferrel

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Beaware that we have seen connection issues with external routers and Arris modems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

Turned off Advanced DNS Services.
DNS relay was already on.
Rebooted my computer, no change.

I checked the router firmwave in the tools/firmwave menu.
The firmware is up to date, according to that. (first figure)

I looked at the Dlink support site for the router, there are several
versions of hardware.  I have Hardware version E1, no revision listed.
On the site, there are three revisions besides the E1 (second figure).
I looked at each revision, and with revE there was some interesting
information, or so it seemed to me.  (figure 3)
There is a firmware 5.10NA, which solved an Apple Compatibility problem.
Is there any way I could use this (without messing everything up)?

Does this modem have a web page menu and a DMZ by chance?
What WAN IP address do you see on the 615 router under Status/DeviceInfo/WanSection? A 192.168 or ##.##.###.###?

What wireless modes are you using?

FW 5.01NA   3/30/2011 is the only resent version available for your E1.
Please review the FW update sticky regarding FW updates please.

need to use a web site like photobucket.com and upload your files there, then you'll see 3 options for URLs, pick the forum url option. Copy and paste the address string in the post.

I logged into the menu for the Arris modem: the menu items are
Status    HW/FW Versions    Event Log    CM State    RIP

No mention of DMZ, etc.

I looked through the manual for the modem, there's no mention
of an internal router.

The firmware for the router is  5.00NA.

In status/wan   the ip address is:        IP Address :   98.200.128.182

Here are the figures I tried to upload earlier.

This is a snapshot of my router setup,  tools/firmware   showing that my firmware is up to date.

This is a snapshot of the dlink support page for DIR-614 firmware, showing the E1 and three revisions
of firmware.

This is a snapshot of  dlink/support/DIR-615/firmware/revE, showing a firmware release for E1
that addresses an Apple Compatibility issue.  I wonder if I can use this?

This is a snapshot of the Arris internet menu, showing the   status  selection, plus other selections
available.

Follow the FW Update sticky and upgrade to the 5.10NA for your unit.
Then Set single mode G and Auto Cypher type and see how they connect. Then try with out any security as a test.
