4 second motion detection mp4's , too short
« on: January 12, 2015, 02:07:28 AM »

Hi,
I have just setup my new dcs-2330. It all works well except that the motion detection videos it records are all 4 seconds long.
I have set the video length to 10 seconds, 30 seconds and 60 seconds, and the emailed mp4s are still all 4 seconds long.
I have stood in front of the camera waving furiously, and only receive a 4 second video.
Anyone else had this problem, or solved it ?
The videos on the SD card are all 4 seconds long as well.

Cheers

Here is  settingas requested.
Video Clip
  Source: Profile1Profile2
  Pre-event recording:  Second(s) [0~3] 3
  Maximum duration:  Second(s) [1~100] 60
Maximum file size:  Kbytes [100~5000] 5000
  File Name Prefix:  Medai

I got one 4 second email numbered 21573, which I assume was triggered from the first motion.
I got 8 emails saying that motion had been detected all at 9:58.

Recordings are limited by the smaller of file size and recording length.  So, if you have a recording length of 30 seconds and a file size of 5000 KB (5 MB), the recording will stop whenever it reaches on of those limits, no matter which one it reaches first.

How big are the 4-second files?  You have a limit of 5 MB set.  4 seconds is awfully short to take up 5 MB, but that's the first thing to check.  You may need to adjust the settings for whichever profile is being recorded to produce a smaller files size per second of recording.

Thanks Monty,

Yes, in HD, the 4 seconds is 5mb. So that will be the problem.

I will lower quality and I reckon that will solve.
I'll report back if I win.

cheers

It sounds like that will do it then.  Good luck.

Hers is an update.
1280 Resolution - 4 second motion detection mp4s
880 Resolution - 6 second mp4's
640 Resolution - 11 second mp4's

Is still too short I reckon, files emailed are between 2mb and 4 mb in size.

I would really like to lengthen the recording length if possible

thanks

The frame rate and quality settings are likely to have more of an impact on file size than resolution.  Also the codec (mode) used.  Try adjusting those.

To give you a frame of reference, my recordings are based on

Mode - H.264
Frame size - 1280x720
Maximum frame rate - 15
Video quality - constant bit rate - 2M

This combination produces a 5MB file that is 20 seconds long.  If I wanted it to be longer, I would first lower the video quality as that is the least important variable to me.  Your priorities may differ of course.

Thanks Mont,

That really helps, i. Never thought of adjusting those parameters.

Will try tomorrow and report back.

Interesting that the firmware update to 1.20 reset the maximum file length to only 2mb (not 5mb).
Have reset this and will see how I go.

I get about 20 seconds now. Would like longer, but is acceptable.
