Last chance for the DGL-4500
« on: February 01, 2010, 07:32:34 AM »

I've tried everything mentioned by the guys from this forum and still nothing seems to work. I wouldn't mind running in certain modes and setting up the router a certain way as long as it would get fixed, but from everything I've read on these forums it seems like these problems have existed for a while now. I know 1.22 is working great for you Furry, but it running well for a few guys doesn't help the rest of the dlink community. I appreciate everyones help. I wish I would've never sold my Dir-655 that was running firmware 1.11MS. It ran great and I never had any problems. Last night I decided to roll my firmware back to 1.15. I messed around for a couple of hours and so far it seems alright. I'll see how it goes the rest of the week. If that doesn't work I'll be buying the Netgear WNDR3700. I've heard only good things about it. On top of my aggravation with the DGL-4500, I also have my wife complaining which only makes things worse. She's been riding me and saying that everything ran great for 2 years and you had to have this new router. This is the last straw.

I hear ya to anderson, if you do buy another one have a look at the apple airport extreme router.  Is what I am going to buy if this doesn't work out, have only seen good things about it so far.  Strong signal, it works on 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands simultaneously and from what I see from peoples reviews it doesn't slow down and stays up for a long time.  Seen one owner who's had one for 8 months and never had to reboot or got kicked off it.  Just an opinion but I never considered an apple router until I ran into problems with this one and started looking around at all the different models.

Every 4500 seems to behave differently with the same firmware.  If you've got an a1 with the 1.02 then you've got a good thing.  If I get the time I'm gonna dig out my a1 and use the new fw tools at dsl reports and downgrade it to 1.16b3 like my a2.

I'm not the only one that doesn't have problems with this router. And yes I do agree that your not the only one that has problems with the router. I believe yes there are possible issues with the router. However I do believe that issues lie elsewhere in peoples networks, i.e. ISP and other HW related configurations that could make the 4500 seem like it's at fault. I also believe that there are user configurations that could also introduce issues into the system.

I have help several people regain full use of there 4500s and willing to help others. Ready up on my buddies experiences we had just this last year with his 4500. Look for Bi Polar Bear on here. We posted what happened during our adventure on here. Turned out it was the ISP and everything between his house and the ISP.

Anyone like to send or swap configuration files for testing?? I have a second 4500 I use for testing. Care to send me your 4500 and let me test it on my network? Have you tested your 4500 on any other networks, i.e. friends house? Just want to offering other alternatives in making sure the root cause of problems can be narrowed down as much as possible before people give up on this router.

It's really not a bad router.

The DGL-4500 (A1) was great wired no matter what firmware I was running...probably the best router I have ever used wired. It screamed. No lag or anything. My problem was the wireless. When I was running N mode only it seemed to be alright. It would run for a while, but on occasion it would get extremely slow...then pick back up. My problem was that I have a psp, wii, and laptop that use different types of wireless, so N only wasn't an option. It' a good temporary fix, but I grew impatient. I only set the wireless security up and turned a few features off or on from the feedback I read in these forums. If I would've found these forums first I would've never bought the DGL-4500...I would've did more research and stuck with my DIR-655 (HW: A2, FW: 1.11MS) that was rock solid for 2+ years. This was an amazing router and I recently had my step-mom buy a DIR-825 A1 (again before I found these forums) and I am thinking of trading it for a DIR-655 since the newest firmware on the DIR-655 seems to have fixed everyones problems. Thanks for everyones help and I'll let you which router I decide to buy. It's probably going to be the Netgear WNDR3700, but I could go back to the DIR-655. I'd have to find a A2 before I would make that adventure though.

I'm back on 1.15 with my A1 and couldn't be happier. Download speeds are where they should be thank goodness.
