Ocasional lock up when using two xbox's at the same time.
« on: January 21, 2011, 08:49:19 PM »

Hi, I experience a router lock up about once a month when at least two or more Xbox's a connected wirelessly and playing with each other at the same time. An example of a lock up would be when we are both playing Call Of Duty our internet connection bar would go from having all 5 green bars down to the dot , while everyone else continues to have a 5 green bar (when you hit select while playing COD). It seems to happen more frequent when we were in a party chat; it would kick us from it and sometimes quickly put us back into it and rarely kick us off xbox live all together. A simple log in restart fixes this. This is not that big of a deal because it does not happen that often at all but I just thought I would ask just in case their was an easy fix to it, or if other users experienced this problem.

Now for the specs
V1 1.15 firmware (very stable other than this minor issue)
channel 1   (11 is used by a couple of neighbors)
2.4 g only
I have using FurryNutz Gamefuel sticky as the other settings (which work very good)
I have 2 computers three ipod touch 3rd gen 1PS3 and a blackberry all connected wirelessly
My modem is D-link dsl-2540B http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825112005&cm_re=dlink_modem-_-25-112-005-_-Product

Isp SBC/AT&T 3.0M/512K

I apologize in advance for not being very technical in my description and lack of knowledge on the subject. And thanks for any advice or suggestions.

I would get occasional loss of wireless signal and I just set all my IP's as static on my devices (thanks to FurryNutz).

It's not hard to do.  Just go to Basic>Network Settings>Number of Dynamic DHCP Clients (at the bottom of the page).

And then RESERVE them (remember to click 'save').  You can somewhat choose which IP address each has by the order in which you reserve them.

XBOX's don't give a name for their IP like your computer will, so turn each XBOX on one at a time so you'll know which is which.

I tried to do a screen shot of mine but I can't figure that out.   :P

Edit to add:  I just re-read your post about the chat rooms.  I also have certain friends that I can play with and some I can't if I'm not the host.  It's like my setup doesn't work with theirs.  So, it may not be anything you can help.

Your settings look good, btw.  Those settings are what Furry told me to do.

Thanks for your response, yeah should have mentioned that I was reserving all my ip addresses on my network. I agree, I mean if a reboot once a month is all I have to do its not that big of a deal compared to the other horror stories I hear on this forum.

What type of speeds does your ISP provide you with? By the looks of the modem you have DSL, which is not very good when it comes to gaming. Could you do a speed test and post it here? www.speedtest.net

Well Your modem and router seem to be setup well. I might venture to say that a reason the router is hanging up once in a while while all 3 boxes are connected via wireless is that there possibly could not be enough bandwidth. 3Mb down would be work ok for 1 xbox, maybe too. Just not sure if 3 would be advised. Any chance of getting a bit more by chance?

I'm also wondering if the router would work better if you put one or two xboxs over a wired connection, would you see the same issue? The buddy I mentioned in the xbox sticky has 3 however he only had one xbox on wireless, the other 2 are wired. However he's using FW v1.23 at this time.

I think your the first person that I know that has 3 xboxs on wireless. Does all 3 support the N mode? You might try single mode N at 2.4Ghz and see if you see any differences.

I cant really upgrade my isp due to living with my parents and they control the billing. 2 out of the 3 xboxs support n mode but the third one does not, but it is not used nearly as much. I used mixed mode which seemed to work ok if not better, but I really only turn it on if I need to stream an HD movie. Even with all three connected and playing in the same COD lobby none of us would experience any sort of lag, it seems to keep up ok. I cant connect it via Ethernet due too having one xbox in the basement, the other two upstairs and the router being on the middle floor. Please let me know if you need additional info.

Well, not sure what else you might do in this situation.
If your running well right now and only seeing a lock up when playing xbox...might be just something to manage once in a while. Until you can get on wired connections and or faster Broadband. I would be interesting to see if this occurs while wired for a test. I know probably hard to try that huh?

Yeah it is very manageable, I usually can access the router through my ipod touch and reset it that way, not even having to leave my chair and be back up in no time, hahah. Other times its really bad and have too go to the wired computer to reset it. Compared to other peoples problems on here this is nothing, and I really do like the 4500. It would be tough to test with an all wired connection for a couple of reasons, but I would love to see the results. Must be nice having these cable connections....

It works well on my Cat 6 system here.  ;D

I presume one day you will get into a better situation where you will have the ability to get faster broadband and setup your own network.
